Why do Xiaomi have annoying pop-ups?
Xiaomi smartphone owners regularly face the problem of suddenly appearing windows: banner ads, notifications from system applications, offers to update software or install new services. The reason lies in the brand shell MIUI, which aggressively integrates its own services and affiliate content. Even after buying a new device, users note that after 1-2 weeks of active use, the number of pop-ups increases significantly.
Especially annoying are pop-ups in Mi, Music, Themes and Security, which have extended notification rights by default. Moreover, after the MIUI 13/14 updates, targeted advertising algorithms have become even more aggressive: the system analyzes your actions (search queries, installed applications, geolocation) and selects βrelevantβ offers. Ironically, even paid models of the Xiaomi 13/14 series are not immune to this problem.
Itβs important to understand that pop-ups on Xiaomi fall into 3 categories β system notifications (updates, alerts), banner ads (from Xiaomi and partners), and notifications from third-party apps. Each type requires a different approach to disabling. For example, ads in the Mi Browser can be removed through the application settings, and system notifications about βmemory cleanupβ β only through the hidden menus of the developer.
Method 1: Disabling Advertising in System Applications
The first step is to remove ads from the standard Xiaomi apps that most often generate pop-ups.
- Open the browser and tap on three dots in the lower right corner.
- Go to Settings. β Additionally.
- Turn off the options: π Recommended content (showing news on the home screen) π Personalized recommendations (targeted advertising) π Notifications for hot news
Clear the data β Clear the cache
Do the same for Music, Themes and Security:
Disable recommendations in the Mi Browser|Delete the music cache|Disable notifications in Topics|Turn off the Cleanup in Security.|Reboot your smartphone-->
β οΈ Note: In some regional versions MIUI (For example, in India, the option to disable ads can be hidden, in which case only installing alternative applications from Google Play (for example, Chrome instead of the Mi browser) will help).
Method 2: Block notifications from specific applications
If pop-ups appear from specific applications (such as games or social networks), they can be blocked through system settings:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Select a problem app (like Facebook or AliExpress).
- Slip on Notifications and turn off the Allow Notifications slider.
- To completely turn off pop-ups, go back and select Battery β Background Activity β Limit.
For mass disabling of notifications from underused applications:
- Go to Settings β Notifications and Status bar.
- Select Latest Notifications β this shows all the apps that have recently shown pop-ups.
- Click on the unnecessary notification and turn it off.
π‘
If after disabling notifications, the application stopped working correctly (for example, messages do not come in messengers), add it to Battery Exclusions through Settings β Battery β Application Selection
Method 3: Hidden MIUI settings for power users
MIUI has hidden parameters that allow you to globally limit the display of pop-ups.
- Go to Settings. β The phone.
- 7 times tap on the item MIUI version - this will turn on the Developer Mode.
- Go back to the basic settings and select a new section for developers.
- Find the option Background Limitation and set the value No Limits (this will prevent pop-ups from background processes).
- Turn off Automatic System Updates and Notifications for New Features.
Instructions for setting up Blokada:
- Download the app from Google Play or from the official website.
- Launch Blokada and allow creation VPN-linkage.
- In the settings, select Blocking β Active lists and add: π EasyList (Basic Lock) π Xiaomi Ad Block (specialized filter for the use of the MIUI)
Always on.
β οΈ Note: When using ad blockers, some features of Xiaomi system applications (such as push notifications to Topics or Security) may stop working. In this case, add problematic applications to the whitelist of the blocker.
Method 5: Manually remove system applications (requires root)
For users with unlocked bootloader and root rights, a radical method is available - removing the system applications responsible for displaying ads. MIUI:
| Package name | He's in charge. | Can I remove it? |
|---|---|---|
| com.miui.analytics | Collecting analytics and displaying targeted advertising | Yes (no consequences) |
| com.xiaomi.midrop | Advertising in Security and Cleanup | Yes (but the file transfer function will be lost) |
| com.miui.systemAdSolution | Systemic banner advertisements | Yes (recommended) |
| com.android.browser | Mi browser with advertising | Yes (install an alternative) |
Use Root Explorer or Titanium Backup to remove:
- Open a file manager with root rights.
- Go to /system/app or /system/priv-app.
- Find a folder with the name of the problem package (such as Analytics).
- Delete the folder or rename it by adding.bak at the end.
- Reset the device.
β οΈ Warning: Removing system applications can lead to unstable work MIUI or update errors. Before the procedure, back up through Settings β Additionally. β Backup.
π‘
Removing root-enabled system applications can lead to a device blink, and use this method only if you are confident in your actions and are prepared for the possible consequences.
Method 6: Resetting settings to factory (extreme case)
If all the previous methods failed, the last option is a complete reset, which will delete all user data, but return the system to a "clean" state without accumulated advertising.
- Create a backup of important data (photos, contacts, messages).
- Go to Settings β About the phone β Reset settings.
- Choose Delete all data and confirm the action.
- After restarting at the initial setup stage, turn off: π Personalized recommendations π Notifications from Xiaomi π Automatic installation of applications
After discharge:
- π± Do not restore data from backup MIUI β It may contain advertising settings.
- π Do not update system apps through Google Play (they can return ads).
- π Install an ad blocker (Blokada or AdGuard) before using your smartphone.
Method 7: Alternative firmware (for advanced users)
If youβre finally getting your hands on MIUI pop-ups, consider installing custom firmware.
- π Pixel Experience - pure Android without advertising and unnecessary services. Supports most models of Redmi and POCO.
- β‘ LineageOS is a stable, open source firmware. A minimalist interface with no pop-ups.
- π§ Xiaomi.EU β modified version MIUI No advertising or Chinese services, retains all the features of the original shell.
Installation process:
- Unlock the bootloader through the official Xiaomi tool (requires a Mi Account and wait 7 days).
- Install custom recovery (TWRP or OrangeFox).
- Download the firmware from the official website (for example, Pixel Experience).
- Flush the firmware through recovery by pre-making Wipe Dalvik/Cache.
β οΈ Note: Installing custom firmware voids warranty and may result in data loss.On some models (e.g. Xiaomi) 12T Or the Redmi Note 11 Pro.+) You need to unlock the anti-rollback, otherwise the device will turn into a brick".
