Automatic word swapping (T9) is one of the most controversial features on Xiaomi smartphones. On the one hand, it speeds up printing by correcting typos; on the other hand, it often swaps words for ridiculous options, prevents you from entering technical terms, nicknames or foreign words. If you are tired of struggling with a smart keyboard that stubbornly replaces βhelloβ with βhelloβ or βadminβ with βadministratorβ, this article will help you completely disable the T9 or customize it for your needs.
We tested all the methods on the current MIUI 14 firmware (Android 13/14) and identified 4 working methods - from simply turning off auto-replacement to changing the keyboard to an alternative one. Instructions are suitable for all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models, including the flagship Xiaomi 14, Redmi Note 13 Pro+ and budget POCO M6. Importantly, some settings may differ depending on the version of MIUI - we will specify all possible options.
Before you start, check your firmware version: go to Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version. If you have MIUI 12 or older, some menu items may be called differently β use the search by settings (the magnifier icon in the upper right corner).
1. disable auto-replacement in the standard MIUI keyboard
Xiaomiβs standard keyboard (aka Xiaomiβs Gboard) has built-in T9 settings that can be adjusted or completely deactivated, the fastest way to do so and doesnβt require any additional apps.
To disable auto-replacement:
- Open any application to enter text (such as Notes or Messages).
- Tap the input field to make the keyboard appear.
- Press the gear icon (βοΈ) in the top row of the keyboard - this will cause the settings menu.
- Select Text Enter β Auto Replacement (or Spelling β Auto Replacement in older versions).
- Turn off the slider next to the "Automatic Replacement" item.
If your version of MIUI does not have a separate "Auto-Replace" option, look for it under Text Correction or Text Prediction. On some models (POCO F5, Redmi 12), the path may look like this: Keyboard settings β Advanced Settings β Text Correction.
Turn off "Auto-Replacement" | Turn off "Word Prediction" | Remove the tick "Automatic comma placement" | Turn off "Auto-correction" (if any)
-->
β οΈ Attention: On some firmware MIUI European region (MIUI EU) Menu items may be called in English: Text correction β Auto-correction. If you don't find Russian-language settings, try switching the interface language to English temporarily.
2. Prediction setting: how to leave clues, but remove the replacement
Not all users need to turn off T9 completely β often enough to have the keyboard offer word variations (gray keys over keys) but not automatically swap them. This is convenient if you type quickly and want to see possible typos, but do not tolerate when the system will βcorrectβ your text.
For this:
- Go to the keyboard settings (as in the previous section).
- Find the text prediction (or next-word suggestions).
- Turn on the slider next to "Show hints."
- Turn off the "Automatic Replacement" option (if it is active).
- In the Tips Style section, select Show over keys (this will make the hints less intrusive).
It is also useful to disable Automatic Comma Arrangement and Double Spaces for a Dot β these features often interfere with typing technical texts or code. If you are a programmer or write frequently on Telegram bots, these settings will save you time.
| Function | What's he doing? | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-replacement | Automatically corrects words | β Shut down. |
| Prediction of text | Shows gray clues | β Leave (if desired) |
| Autocorrection | Corrects typos after gap | β Shut down. |
| Autocomas | Comma-settling automatically | β Shut down. |
| Slide input (Swipe) | Allows you to type with your finger holding | β Leave (does not affect T9) |

If you often type in two languages, add both to your keyboard settings (Languages and input), but disable auto-replacement for each individual, which will prevent situations where words in English are replaced with Russian and vice versa.
Reset keyboard dictionary: if T9 "remembered" errors
Sometimes the problem isn't with the auto-replace feature itself, but with the tainted dictionary. Xiaomi's keyboard remembers frequently used words, including those you typed with typos. Over time, this leads to the T9 beginning to offer ridiculous options, such as replacing "thank you" with "thank you" or "computer" with "computer".
To reset the dictionary:
- Go to Settings β System and Device β Language and Entering β Virtual Keyboard.
- Select your keyboard (such as the Xiaomi or Gboard keyboard).
- Find the dictionary or personal data section.
- Click Clear Personal Data or Reset the Dictionary.
- Confirm the action (a password or pattern lock may be required).
Once reset, the keyboard will start to relearn your typing style, so to speed up the process, you can manually add frequently used words to the user's dictionary (the My Dictionary section in the keyboard settings), which is useful if you often write specific terms, nicknames or abbreviations.
β οΈ Warning: Resetting the dictionary will also remove all saved texts from the clipboard (if they are synced to the keyboard). If you want to save your copy history, pre-export it through Settings. β Additionally. β buffer.
Installation of an alternative keyboard (Gboard, SwiftKey, Fleksy)
If the standard Xiaomi keyboard, even after all the settings, continues to annoy, the best solution is to install a third-party keyboard.
- πΉ Google Gboard is the most stable alternative with flexible T9 settings.
- πΉ Microsoft SwiftKey β supports swipe input and cloud synchronization of the dictionary.
- πΉ Fleksy β Minimalist keyboard with extended themes.
- πΉ AnySoftKeyboard β open source, maximum customization.
To install and configure an alternative keyboard:
- Download the app from Google Play (like Gboard).
- After installation, go to Settings β System and Device β Language and Input β Virtual Keyboard.
- Turn on the slider next to the new keyboard.
- Press the default keyboard and select the one installed.
- Launch the keyboard (e.g. in Messages) and set up the T9 in its menu (icon) βοΈ).
In Gboard, the path to disable auto-replace: Settings β Text input β Auto-replace β Off.. In SwiftKey, this is done through Settings β Predictions and Auto-Replacement β Disable Auto-Replacement.
How to Get Back a Standard Xiaomi Keyboard
5. Disconnect T9 via ADB (for power users)
If you are an advanced user and want to completely delete the system files of the T9, you can do this through ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which is suitable for unlocked Xiaomi smartphones with root rights or for devices where the standard settings do not work.
Warning: Incorrect ADB commands may disrupt the system.
Instructions:
- Install ADB Tools on your PC.
- Turn on USB Debugging on your phone: Settings β About Phone β MIUI version (click 7 times to become a developer), then Settings β Additional β Developers β Debugging over USB.
- Connect your phone to your PC and execute the command in the terminal: adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.sohu.inputmethod.xiaomi (this will disable the standard Xiaomi keyboard).
- Install an alternative keyboard (as in the previous section).
To return a standard keyboard, use the command:
adb shell pm enable com.sohu.inputmethod.xiaomiβ οΈ Note: On some models (Xiaomi) 13T, Redmi K60) The path to the keyboard may be different. Check the exact package through the command adb shell pm list packages | grep keyboard.
6. Frequent problems and solutions
Even after the T9 was turned off, Xiaomi users are faced with nuances.
- π T9 turns on itself after the update - check the keyboard settings after installing new versions MIUI. Often updates reset user preferences.
- π± Some apps have T9 working, others don't, depending on the settings of the particular messenger, like WhatsApp or WhatsApp. VK It could be an auto-replacement.
- π Keyboard ignores auto-replacement shutdown β try clearing the keyboard cache in Settings β Annexes β keyboard β Warehouse β Clear the cache.
- π Swipe gestures do not work after disabling T9 - in the keyboard settings, find the slide input (Swipe) and turn it on separately.
Xiaomi models with MediaTek processor (e.g. Redmi 10C, POCO M4 Pro) may experience printing lag after the T9 is turned off, which is due to optimizing firmware for specific hardware, the solution is to install Gboard or roll back firmware to an older version of MIUI.

If none of these methods worked, try resetting your keyboard to factory settings: Settings β System β Settings β Resetting App Settings. This wonβt delete your data, but will bring all system applications (including the keyboard) back to βout of the box.β
