Why is Xiaomi getting ads and can it be removed?
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones are powered by MIUI, which is known not only for its functionality but also for its aggressive advertising policies, and they appear in the settings menu, lock screen, system applications (such as Browser, Music or Themes), and even notification panels, and ads can be displayed even in global firmware versions, not to mention Chinese builds.
The main reason is monetization: Xiaomi compensates for the low price of devices through display ads. However, users often experience banners disrupting work, consuming traffic and draining the battery. The good news is that most ads can be turned off without root rights using hidden system settings or standard tools. In this article, we will discuss all working methods, from simple to advanced, including methods for POCO Launcher and devices with MIUI 14/15.
It's important to understand that some types of advertising (e.g., in pre-installed apps like Mi Video or GetApps) can't be removed without removing the programs themselves, but even then, there are workarounds, as we'll discuss below.
Method 1: Disabling personalized advertising in MIUI settings
The first and most secure method is to deactivate personalized recommendations through the system menu, which won't take away all the ads, but will significantly reduce the number of banners targeted. MIUI 12-15 (including HyperOS on new models).
Go to: Settings → Google → Advertising (or Settings → Additional → Privacy → Advertising on some firmware).
- 🔹 Turn off the “Personalized Advertising” slider (or “Interest-Based Advertising»).
- 🔹 Click "Reset advertising" ID» — This will nullify your profile for targeting.
- 🔹 In System Apps, disable ads for GetApps, Mi Video, and Themes (if available).
On some devices (such as the Redmi Note 12 or POCO X5), the path may be different. If the Ads item is not on the Google menu, try:
Settings → The phone. → Version. MIUI
Settings → Additional → Special Opportunities → Advertising
💡
If you still have ads after you shut down, restart your phone. Some settings only apply after the reboot.
Method 2: Manual disabling of advertising in system applications
Many banners are displayed through Xiaomi’s pre-installed services, such as GetApps, Mi Video, Music or Browser, which can be disabled individually:
- GetApps (Mi App Store): 📱 Open the app, tap on the avatar in the upper right corner. 🔧 Select "Settings» → «Recommendations» → Turn off “Personalized recommendations” and “Show ads».
- Mi Video/Music: 🎬 In the app, go to "Profile» → «Settings» → «Advertising and notification». 🚫 Turn off all sliders associated with advertising.
Browser:
- 🌐 Open your browser, tap three dots. → «Settings» → «Confidentiality».
- 🔍 Turn off “Personalized News” and “Recommendations on the Main Page».
On models with MIUI 14+ (such as Xiaomi 13T or Redmi Note 13 Pro), the path to advertising settings may be hidden, in which case, use a search by settings (the magnifying glass icon at the top) and enter the “advertising” query.

Method 3: Using ADB to Deeply Disable Advertising
If standard methods do not help, you can use debugging on the ADB (Android Debug Bridge! will disable system services responsible for displaying ads, without root rights. The method works on all Xiaomi devices, including POCO F5 redmi K60.
You'll need:
✅ Computer with drivers installed ADB (You can download from the official Android website).
✅ Included debugging by USB on the phone (Settings) → The phone. → Version. MIUI → 7 taps → Settings → Additionally. → For developers → Debugging by USB).
✅ USB-cable (preferably original).
Connect your phone to your PC and execute the following commands in turn in the command line (cmd):
adb shell pm hide com.miui.systemAdSolution
adb shell pm hide com.xiaomi.midrop
adb shell pm hide com.miui.analytic
adb shell pm hide com.miui.msa.global
adb shell pm hide com.miui.daemonThese commands disable the main services responsible for collecting data and displaying ads. Once executed, restart the phone.
What if the ADB can’t see the device?
⚠️ Note: Disabling system services through ADB This can cause some functions to work in an unstable way (e.g. synchronizing Mi Account or push notifications). If you have problems, return everything back with the command:
adb shell pm unhide com.miui.systemAdSolution(Replace the name of the package with the correct one).
Method 4: Remove preinstalled applications (without root rights)
Many banner ads are displayed through unnecessary system applications that can be disabled or removed without getting root, such as the free App Remover app or the built-in Application Removal feature in MIUI.
List of safe applications to remove (does not affect system stability):
| Title of the annex | Package (name in the system) | What's he doing? | Can I remove it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| GetApps | com.xiaomi.mipicks | Xiaomi app store with advertising | ✅ Yes. |
| Mi Video | com.miui.video | Video player with banners | ✅ Yes. |
| Music. | com.miui.player | Musical player with advertising | ✅ Yes. |
| browser | com.android.browser | Standard browser with news feed | ⚠️ It is possible, but it is better to replace it with Chrome. |
| Mi Pay | com.miui.tsmclient | Payment system (not working in Russia) | ✅ Yes. |
To remove the app:
1. Download App Remover from Google Play.
2. grant the application the right to delete (must be enabled) USB-debugging).
3. Find the unnecessary app in the list and tap "Delete."
⚠️ Note: Do not remove system components called com.miui.home, com.android.settings or com.miui.securitycenter, which will cause your phone to fail!

Method 5: Install custom firmware (for advanced users)
If you are ready to take radical measures, you can install custom firmware without advertising, for example:
✅ LineageOS (Pure Android),
✅ Pixel Experience (Google Pixel-style firmware),
✅ MIUI EU (European assembly without advertising).
Advantages:
✔ Complete absence of advertising and bloatware (unnecessary applications).
✔ Regular security updates.
✔ Ability to fine-tune the interface.
Disadvantages:
✖ Requires unlocking the bootloader (will lead to a data reset).
✖ The risk of loss of warranty (on some models).
✖ Possible bugs (e.g., non-functioning) NFC camera).
Installation instructions (briefly):
1. Unlock the bootloader through the official Xiaomi tool (a tied Mi Account is required).
2. Install custom recovery (TWRP).
3. Download the firmware from the XDA Developers website for your model.
4. Flow through TWRP.
💡
Custom firmware is the most reliable way to get rid of advertising, but it is only suitable for advanced users. For beginners, we recommend limiting yourself to methods 1-4.
Method 6: Blocking Advertising via DNS or VPN
If the advertisement appears in the browser or some applications, it can be blocked at the network level by:
- 🔒 Private DNS: Go to Settings. → Connections → Private DNS and enter the address dns.adguard.com or 1.1.1.3).
- 🛡️ VPN Ad-Blocking: Install AdGuard VPN Blokada (free versions available on Google Play).
- 🌍 Hosts: Apps like AdAway (require root) or DNS66 (without root) block advertising domains at the system level.
These methods are effective against banners in the browser, social networks and some games, but will not remove ads in Xiaomi system applications.
Method 7: Resetting the phone to factory settings (extreme case)
If none of these methods worked, you can reset your phone completely and then set up your phone without logging into your Mi Account, which will prevent you from synchronizing your advertising identifiers.
- Make a backup copy of important data (photos, contacts).
- Go to Settings → About Phone → Resetting → Erase all data.
- After reset, do not restore data from the MIUI backup – this will return the advertising settings.
- When you first start, skip the Mi Account login and turn off all sync options.
⚠️ Warning: Reset will delete all data, including photos, messages and installed apps. Use this method only if other methods have failed.
