Many Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone users are faced with news, articles and promotional offers suddenly appearing on a locked screen, a feature known as Wallpaper Carousel or Glance, often activated by default when the device is first turned on, designed to entertain the owner while he is not using the phone, but in practice often annoys, consumes traffic and drains the battery.
Disabling this feature does not require deep knowledge or root access rights. However, the location of the switches you need may vary depending on the version of the MIUI firmware or the new HyperOS. In this article, we will discuss in detail all ways to remove the intrusive view so that your lock screen is clean and functional again.
What is a Wallpaper Carousel and Why It Turns On
The feature, commonly referred to as the βoverview,β is technically a wallpaper carousel service (or Glance for Mi in global versions), a system application that downloads content from the Internet and displays it on top of a standard lock screen, with the main goal of developers being to retain user attention and monetize through advertising integrations.
Often users do not notice how to activate this option. When you initially set up a new Xiaomi smartphone, the system suggests you choose a theme, and one of the menu items already ticks the βEnable Wallpaper Carouselβ. If you flip through this moment inattentively, the function will turn on automatically, and the firmware update can return the default settings by reactivating the service.
The difference between a live wallpaper and a carousel is a live wallpaper that doesn't change content or require the Internet, and the carousel keeps updating pictures, news headlines and widgets, putting additional strain on the device's processor and communication module.
Disconnection through lock screen settings
The easiest and most appropriate way to remove the review is to use the regular system settings menu, which works on most current versions of MIUI 12, 13, 14 and HyperOS shells. You don't need third-party programs, just find the right item in the system menu.
First, unlock the device and go to the main menu, find the Settings icon and open it. Then the algorithm may vary slightly, but the general logic is maintained. You need to find the section that deals with the appearance of the locked state.
In the settings that open, look for the Lock Screen. Inside this menu, there's a switch called Wallpaper Carousel or Glance for Mi. Turn the slider to Off. The system can request confirmation of action or suggest that you leave the function on -- agree to shut down.
βοΈ Checklist of disconnection through settings
After you do this, the next time you press the power button, you'll see a standard static image, and if the switch returns to its original position immediately, there may be restrictions or parental controls on the device that block the system settings from changing.
Management through Security Application
In the Xiaomi ecosystem, many of the system functions are put into a separate Security app (green zipper icon) that is a central hub for memory cleaning, antivirus and optimization, but also hidden ad settings and carousels. If you don't find the right item in the main settings, be sure to check this section.
Launch the Security app from your desktop. In the upper right corner of the screen, click on the gear icon to open the app's settings menu. In the list that opens, look for Wallpaper Carousel, where you can not only turn off the feature, but also adjust its behavior if full removal is not enough.
This menu often hides additional options, such as Lock Mode or Show Content. Make sure all switches are off. There may also be a Recommendations option available, which is responsible for personalized news selection, which also needs to be deactivated for full effect.
β οΈ Note: In some firmware regions, the carousel control room may be renamed Lock Screen Magazine or Slideshow Wallpaper.Look for any mention of the words "slide," "magazine" or "magazine" in the security settings.
Disabling system applications and services
Sometimes, switching the slider is not enough, as the background processes continue to work and consume resources. To ensure the result, it is recommended to disable or limit the work of system applications responsible for downloading content, this is especially true for older Redmi models, which can slow down due to the abundance of background tasks.
Go to Settings β Apps β All Apps. In the upper right corner, click on three dots and select Show System Processes. In the list, you will find apps called Wallpaper Carousel, Mi Browser (if it downloads news) or MSA (MIUI System Ads).
Select the desired application and click the Disable or Stop button. If the Disable button is inactive (gray), try first press Clear β Clear all data, and then Turn off notifications. This will prevent pop-ups and content updates from appearing in the background.
| Title of the process | Function | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Wallpaper carousel | Change of pictures on the lock screen | Turn it off completely. |
| MSA | Systemic advertising service | Withdraw consent and disable |
| GetApps | Xiaomi App Store | Disable notifications |
| Mi Video / Mi Music | Media services with recommendations | Limit background activity |

Customization of personalization and recommendations
Even after the main feature is disabled, tails can remain in the system in the form of personalized recommendations. Xiaomi actively collects usage data to offer relevant content. To (cardinally) remove the traces of the review, you need to revoke consent to use the data.
Go to Settings β Passwords & Security β Access to Personal Data (or Authorization & Reviews). Find the msa and MIUI Daemon list. Turn off the switch next to them. The system will alert you for 10 seconds that you are going to turn off important features - this is the standard intimidation procedure, you just need to wait for the timer to end and confirm the disconnection.
It's also worth checking the widget settings. Sometimes users accidentally add a News or Ribbon widget to the home screen or lock screen. Press and hold your finger on the empty desktop space, select Widgets and check if there are any active blocks with the news feed. If there are, delete them by clicking on the cross or dragging them to the basket.

Tip: After revoking consents in the authorization section, it is recommended to restart the device, which is guaranteed to stop all background services that could be preserved in RAM.
Solving problems: if the review is not removed
In rare cases, users encounter bugs when settings are not saved or the function is turned on again after a reboot. This may be due to a conflict of third-party themes or errors in a particular firmware version. If standard methods did not help, try the following solutions.
The first thing you should do is change the theme to the standard one. Third-party themes from Themes store can have their own lock screen settings that override the system one. Go to Themes app, select a person's profile and click My Themes. Choose a classic Classic or Default theme and apply it.
Step two is to clear the cache. Go to Settings β Apps β All apps, find the Wallpaper Carousel, click Storage and select Clear Cache and Clear Everything. Then try turning off the function again. If the persists problem persists, you may need to reset to factory settings, but that's a last resort.
β οΈ Warning: Resetting to factory settings will delete all your personal data, photos and contacts.Be sure to back up important information in the cloud or on your computer before doing this.
The third option is to upgrade the system. Check for updates in the About Phone menu. Developers often release patches that fix bugs in the system services. If you have a beta version of the firmware installed, consider rolling back to a stable version.

If none of these methods worked, the problem may be with a particular version of the Carousel app. Try finding it in the app list, uninstall updates (if available), or install an older stable version. APK-file.
