Owning a modern Xiaomi smartphone often involves using cloud services, but good old backup methods have not gone away. Keeping contacts directly to the SIM card remains relevant for those who often change devices or do not trust the cloud. Owners of Redmi and POCO phones can face the nuances of the MIUI or HyperOS shell, where the menu is sometimes hidden in unexpected places.
Many users mistakenly believe that the process is identical on all versions of Android. In fact, the algorithms for working with the phone book in Xiaomi have their own features, depending on the version of the system and the region. If you are planning to move to another phone or just want to have a physical copy of the numbers, it is important to understand the difference between local storage and synchronization. Below we will discuss all the available methods and possible pitfalls.
Before you start mass data transfer, it is worth assessing the current state of your phone book. Contact export is a safe procedure, but requires attention to detail, so as not to create duplicates or lose important fields, such as email addresses or photos of subscribers.
Preparation of a telephone book before export
The first step is always to review the records that are available. Often, the numbers are scattered across multiple sources: part is in the memory of the Google account, another part is in the local memory of the phone, and the third can already be on the SIM card.
Open the standard Contacts app on your Xiaomi. Pay attention to the top of the screen or side menu: it usually shows where exactly the current displayed list is stored. If you see a separation, for example, "Phone" and "SIM 1", you need to combine this data or choose a source for transfer. This is a critical step, since direct transfer from the Google cloud to the SIM card through the standard menu may not be available without first importing into the device memory.
Make sure that your SIM card has enough free space: Older cards can store a limited number of characters in the contact name (usually up to 10-14 characters) and have a limit on the number of numbers (often 250 or 500 entries).

The most common scenario is moving numbers from the internal memory of a Redmi Note or Xiaomi Mi smartphone to a plastic card. The interface may vary slightly depending on the version of MIUI, but the logic remains the same. You will need access to contact management.
Go to the Contacts app and click on the three dots in the upper right corner (or the "More" button). In the drop-down menu, select Settings or Import/Export Contacts immediately. The system will request permission to access the storage, which must be confirmed. Next, select Export to Storage or, if available, Copy from phone to phone immediately. SIM-map.
If there is no direct copy button, use the intermediate step: export contacts to internal memory in.vcf format, then in the same menu select Import from storage and specify the source of your SIM card and the target is your phone, but in reverse order. However, in pure Android on Xiaomi, direct copy is most often used.

Why Google does not allow you to save on SIM directly?

The situation can be reversed: you bought a new Xiaomi Redmi or POCO and want to flip numbers from an old SIM card. This is a regular procedure that is done quickly. Put the card in a new smartphone and wait for the completion of registration on the network.
When you first set up the phone, you can suggest importing contacts. If that doesn't happen, open the Contacts app. Go to the menu (three dots or sidebar) and select Settings -> Import/export contacts. Press the button Import with SIM-map.
The system will suggest you choose whether to save data to a Google account, to a phone memory or to a Xiaomi Cloud account. For maximum safety and convenience, you should choose a Google account or a phone memory with subsequent synchronization, which will allow you to restore numbers in the future even without a physical SIM card.

Solution: no contacts are saved or grey
Sometimes users have a problem when the copy button is inactive (gray) or the process ends in error, most often due to overflowing memory of the SIM card or formatting data. If the button is gray, check if the source is selected. On some versions of MIUI, you need to first tap on the item "Copy from the phone", and only then the choice of the recipient becomes active.
Another common problem is that contacts are saved but displayed as Contact 1 or Contact 2 without names, which occurs if the name encoding on the SIM card is incompatible with the current location of the phone, or if the names were initially too long and were cut off beyond recognition when the previous entry was made, in which case it is impossible to recover full names from the SIM card, you need to search for the original in the cloud or on an old phone.

For advanced users, it is possible to manage contacts via the i.mi.com web interface, which is convenient for editing large lists, removing duplicates and grouping before the final export to the device, however, the physical transfer to the plastic card will still have to be done through the menu of the smartphone itself.
