Why canβt Redmi 9 change the keyboard language?
Owners of Xiaomi Redmi 9 (including Redmi 9A, 9C, 9T) often face a problem: the keyboard language is suddenly reset into English, the Russian layout disappears, or the system ignores changes in settings, the reasons are rooted in the features of the MIUI firmware and conflicts between the standard MIUI Keyboard and third-party solutions like Gboard.
In this article, weβll look at all the current ways to change the language, from basic settings to hidden MIUI features that Xiaomi doesnβt advertise, and learn how to add layout through the system menu, customize switching gestures, restore missing languages after updating, and even manually install language packs if theyβre not displayed in the list.
We will focus on common errors: why the language resets after a reboot, what to do if the keyboard settings have an empty list of languages, and what to do if the system requires an Internet connection to load packets. All instructions are tested on MIUI 12.5, 13 and 14 (including global and Chinese versions of firmware).
Method 1: Standard language change via MIUI settings
The most obvious method is to use built-in MIUI tools, which is suitable if you have a standard MIUI Keyboard (also known as com.miui.miuikeyboard) installed.
- Open βSettingsβ (the gear icon on the home screen or in the application menu).
- Go to Additional β Language and Entering (on some versions of MIUI, the path may look like System and Device β Language and Input).
- Slip on the current keyboard (or keyboard management).
- Select MIUI Keyboard (if it is not in the list, turn on the slider next to it).
- Click the Input Languages and add the required layouts, moving them in the list for priority.
If your language is not on the list, check:
- π System Region: Go to Settings β The phone. β Region and select the country corresponding to the language (e.g. "Russia" for Russian layout).
- π Update Language Packages: In the same Input Languages menu, there can be a βDownloadβ or βUpdateβ buttonΒ».
- π± Version MIUI: on Chinese firmware (China) ROM) Some languages are hidden β you need to flash to the global version.
Make sure your phone is connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data)
Check the memory space (requires ~50MB for language packs)
Close all applications that use the keyboard (messengers, browser)
Turn off the VPN (it can block the loading of languages)
-->
After adding the language, you can switch between layouts:
- π Swipe by space (if the option is enabled in the keyboard settings).
- π By clicking on the globe icon on the keyboard panel.
- π€ Holding the switch key (usually next to the space).

If the language is added but doesnβt appear on the keyboard, try rebooting the phone β sometimes MIUI caches the old settings.
Method 2: Configure Gboard (Google Keyboard)
Many Redmi 9 users install Gboard instead of the standard keyboard for its advanced features (such as gesture input or integration with Google Translate).
- Open any input field (such as WhatsApp or Notes).
- Put the badge on. βοΈ (gear) on the keyboard panel to open Gboard settings.
- Select Languages β Add a keyboard.
- Scroll through the list and mark the languages you want (for example, Russian, Ukrainian, Kazakh).
- Return to the Languages menu and turn on the Switching of layouts option (to quickly swipe languages over the space).
If the language is not saved or disappears after rebooting:
- π§ Clear Gboard cache: Settings β Annexes β Application management β Gboard β Memory. β Clear the cache.
- π₯ Update the app via Google Play (sometimes bugs are fixed in new versions).
- π Reset Gboard Settings: Select Three Dots from the Keyboard Menu β Resetting settings.

Important for MIUI 14: In recent firmware versions, Gboard may conflict with system services. If the keyboard starts to slow down or spontaneously switch after installing the language, turn off the option of Adaptive Input in the Gboard settings (Text correction section).
Method 3: Manually add a language packet (if the language is not listed)
Sometimes the language you want is not displayed in the settings, especially in rare layouts (for example, Tatar, Armenian or Georgian). APK-file.
First, check:
- Does your phone open access to Settings β System β Language and input β Virtual Keyboard β MIUI Keyboard β Language download. If the partition is empty, go to manual installation.
- Whether the phone is connected to the Internet (no VPN!) Some languages only load with a stable connection.
If the language doesn't appear anyway,
- π² Install. APK Download a file from the official Xiaomi forum (for example, MIUI Open the file through Explorer and confirm the installation. Reboot the phone.
- π§ Use it. ADB-command (for advanced users): adb shell cmd overlay enable --user 0 com.miui.keyboard.language.{code language} Where {code language} is, for example, ru for Russian or uk for Ukrainian. MIUI.
