Xiaomiβs current smartphones have powerful tools for managing personal information, but sometimes users face chaos in the phone book. Duplicate contacts appear suddenly, creating confusion and taking up space, often after changing devices, recovering from backup or actively syncing with different services.
Solving this problem requires no deep technical knowledge. The built-in MIUI shell and the new HyperOS allow you to quickly clean up your order. You do not need to install third-party applications, since the system functionality allows you to effectively hide and combine records.
In this article, we will discuss all the available ways to clean the list, learn how to customize the display, use automatic integration and prevent duplicates in the future, which will help make using the Phone and Messages more comfortable.
Why are there duplicates on Xiaomi?
The main reason for copying is synchronization of data from different sources: when you sign in to a Google account, Mi Account or import data from a different source. SIM-The system can perceive the same numbers as different records if they are stored in different parts of memory.
Often users create copies without noticing that the contact already exists in the cloud, such as a number stored in a phone's memory, and when you connect a Google account, a copy of it is created in the cloud, resulting in two identical entry in the list.
β οΈ Note: When importing contacts with SIM-Always check your settings, and the system can automatically create copies of existing numbers if the correct action is not selected in a conflict.
The problem is also relevant when switching from other Android smartphones or iPhones. Data portability tools such as the Mi Mover sometimes duplicate records if the new device has already logged in, and understanding the source of the duplicates is the first step to eliminating them.
Configure the display of contacts in the application
The first and easiest way to hide the extra entries is to change the display filter. The standard Contacts app on Xiaomi lets you choose which groups and accounts to show up in a shared list, which doesn't delete the data, but visually clears the list.
To set up, open the Contacts app and go to the settings menu. It's usually hidden behind three points or the Display Settings item. Here you'll see a list of all the accounts you've connected: Phone, Google, Mi Account, Telegram, and more.
- π± Turn off the accounts you donβt need right now to see only the main phone book.
- π₯ Use the βNumbers Onlyβ feature to hide profiles from social networks that are not linked to the phone.
- π Activate sorting by name or surname so that duplicates stand next to each other and are easier to spot.
It's important to understand that simply hiding an account doesn't solve the storage problem: Duplicates stay in the device's memory or the cloud, a method that's good for quick navigation, but a deeper approach will be needed to clean it completely.

Use the Favorites feature for the most important numbers, which will allow you to quickly find the right people, even if the overall list is still a mess.
Automatic combination of duplicates
The most effective method is to use a built-in fusion algorithm, and the MIUI 12, 13, 14 and HyperOS shells are equipped with a smart system that finds similar records and suggests combining them, which is safe and keeps the entire history of calls and correspondence.
To start the process, open the Contacts app. In the upper right corner, find the three-dot icon or profile avatar. In the drop-down menu, select Tools or Combine Duplicates immediately. The system will scan the database.
Menu path: Contacts β Menu (three dots) β Tools β Combine duplicatesAfter analysis, you'll see a list of pairs or groups of contacts that the system thinks are the same, and you can look at them before you confirm them, and the algorithm compares phone numbers, names and email addresses.
βοΈ The consolidation process
When you merge, the system creates a single card that transfers all the numbers, email addresses and photos from the combined records, and the old duplicates are deleted, freeing up space, which is a standard feature that does not cause data loss.
Manual editing and deletion of records
Automation is not always perfect, especially if the numbers are written in different formats (for example, +7 and 8). In such cases, manual intervention is required, you will have to find the extra entries and delete them yourself or add the missing numbers to the main card.
Open the contact card, which should remain the primary. Press the Change button (usually the pencil icon). At the bottom of the screen, there is often a Add number or Link contact button. Select the link option and find the duplicate entry in the list.
| Action. | The result | Risks. |
|---|---|---|
| Removal of the double | Complete disappearance of the record | You can delete the number you want. |
| Binding | Combination in one card | Minimum data are retained |
| Rename | Change of name for distinction | Chaos in the contact list |
If the automatic unification didn't offer the right option, use manual search. Type a name or part of a number into the search bar. If the system found several identical names, open each and check the numbers. Remove the extra ones through the More β Delete menu.
β οΈ Warning: Before mass manual removal, make sure you do not erase unique numbers. Only a full copy or record with the same number but a different name is considered a duplicate.
Work with Google and Mi Cloud accounts
Often the problem isn't with the phone itself, but with the cloud services being out of sync, and if you've been using different devices for a long time, Google Contacts and Mi Cloud might have accumulated old versions of the records, and when you sync them, they get back into the phone.
The best way to clean up your mess is to use a web interface. Go to contacts.google.com from your computer. In the menu on the left, select Combine and Fix. Google will suggest combining similar contacts and removing blank entries.
After cleaning up the cloud, update your Xiaomi smartphone data. Go to Settings β Accounts and Sync. Select your Google account and click Sync. Make sure the Contacts slider is active.
What if the contacts are lost after synchronization?
You can do the same thing in Mi Cloud. Go to i.mi.com, log in, and go to the contacts section, and there's also a double-double management feature, and the key is not to keep two sync sources for the same data active at the same time unless you need to.
Preventing the appearance of duplicates in the future
To keep the problem from coming back, itβs important to change your number saving habits. Always check which account is being contacted. By default, Xiaomi may offer saving to your phoneβs memory or to your Mi Account, whereas youβre used to using Google.
You can set up a single default account for all transactions in the Contacts app settings, find your new contacts account, and select your primary Google account, and all new entries will now fly to the Google cloud, bypassing local memory.
- π Turn off syncing contacts with accounts you donβt actively use (such as old Skype or Viber accounts).
- πΎ Export contacts to.vcf as a backup before major system updates.
- π Do not use multiple contact aggregator applications at the same time, this often leads to database conflicts.
It is critical to choose one primary storage (Google or Mi Cloud) and not save numbers in memory. SIM-maps or locally to a device without synchronization.
π‘
A single point of saving contacts (e.g., only Google Account) is a guarantee that duplicates will not be created when you change your phone or reset your settings.
