Why does standard wallpaper on Xiaomi seem boring?
Have you ever walked into the Xiaomi smartphone gallery and thought, "I want the screen to come alive!"? Static pictures are a thing of the past century. Modern dynamic wallpapers respond to the time of day, the weather, even your gestures. But how do you turn them on on devices with MIUI 14/15 or HyperOS if there is no obvious switch in the settings?
The problem is that Xiaomi officially supports live wallpaper only on flagship models (the 13/14 series, Mix Fold), and budget device owners have to look for workarounds, luckily there are at least five of them, from built-in themes to hidden features of the engineering menu.
Important: Not all methods are equally safe, for example, installing an APK from unknown sources can lead to a com.android.systemui error, and mismanipulating adb can lead to a reset, but if you follow the instructions, the risks are minimal.
Method 1: Built-in live themes in MIUI
The easiest method is to use official themes from Xiaomi. They are not always animated, but some collections contain dynamic elements (for example, falling snow or moving clouds).
- Open the Themes app (icon with brush).
- Go to the wallpaper tab β Live wallpaper.
- Scroll down to Dynamic or Interactive.
- Click Apply and select the screen (home, lock, or both).
β οΈ Note: On HyperOS devices (e.g. Xiaomi 14 or Redmi Note 13 Pro)+) This section may be called effects. AOD. There are hidden animations for the always-on display, which partially work on the main wallpaper.
If your area has a blank wallpaper section, try:
- π Change the region in your phone settings to India or China (there are more of them).
- π Update theme app via Google Play or APKMirror.
- π₯ Download themes manually from themes.xiaomi.com (you need a Mi Account).
Method 2: Third-party applications for live wallpaper
If there are few built-in options, third-party apps come to the rescue.
| Annex | Features | Cons | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wallpaper Engine | Support 3D-Animations, reaction to music, weather | Paid (β300β½), battery consumption | MIUI 12+ (needs a Root or ADB) |
| KLWP Live Wallpaper | Customization to the smallest detail, widgets on top of wallpaper | Complex interface, lags on weak chips | All versions of Android 8+ |
| Live Wallpapers 4K | Free of charge HD-animations (fire, water, space) | Advertising, limited functionality | Any Xiaomi without Root |
| Muzei | Automatic change of wallpaper on schedule | There is no real animation, only static pictures. | Android 5.0+ |
For installation:
- Download APK from APKMirror or Google Play.
- Allow installation from unknown sources in Settings β Applications β Special Access.
- Launch the app and select wallpaper.
- In the wallpaper settings of the phone (Settings β Wallpaper) select Live Wallpaper β the name of the application.
Make a backup of current wallpaper
Check the vacant space (minimum 200 MB)
Disable battery optimization for the application
Restart the phone after installation-->
β οΈ Note: Apps like Wallpaper Engine require additional rights. Xiaomi with HyperOS may need a team:
adb shell pm grant com.wallpaperengine.android android.permission.BIND_WALLPAPERMethod 3: Hidden MIUI functions via ADB
For advanced users, there is a way to unlock hidden live wallpaper through ADB. This method works on most Xiaomi/Redmi/Poco devices with MIUI 13+.
You'll need:
- π₯οΈ Computer with installed ADB Tools.
- π± Included debugging by USB (Settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI β Press 7 times; then additionally β For developers β Debugging by USB).
- π Cable USB (preferably original).
Steps:
- Connect the phone to the PC and confirm debugging.
- Open the command line in the adb folder and type:
adb shell settings put global use_live_wallpaper 1- Reset the device.
- Now in Settings β Wallpaper should appear section Live wallpaper.
What to do if the team does not work?
β οΈ Note: On some devices (e.g. Redmi Note 11 with a MIUI 14) this command causes the system interface to fail. Before experimenting, back up through Settings β Additionally. β Backup.
Method 4: Video wallpaper from the gallery
Few people know, but Xiaomi lets you install video as wallpaper - no third-party apps! feature hidden, but works on most models with MIUI 12+.
Instructions:
- Download the video (MP4 format, resolution no higher than 1920Γ1080, duration up to 15 seconds).
- Place it in the DCIM β Wallpapers folder (create it if not).
- Open the Gallery, find the video and tap on three points β Install as wallpaper.
- Select Live Wallpaper (if the option is not active, reboot your phone).
Limitations:
- π₯ The video will be played without sound.
- π Battery consumption will increase by 10-15%.
- π± On some models (Poco) X3, Redmi 9A) video clipped around the edges.
π‘
To ensure that the video does not slow down, convert it to H.264 format with a bitrate of no more than 5 Mbps.
Method 5: Castom firmware and Root
If youβre willing to take drastic measures, installing custom firmware (like LineageOS or Pixel Experience) will open up access to native Android live wallpaper, including:
- π Space Themes with Paralax Effect.
- π¨ Gradients that respond to touch.
- π‘ Animations based on sensor data (gyroscope, accelerometer).
Cons:
- β οΈ Loss of warranty (on most models).
- π§ Risk of "bricking" in case of firmware error.
- π± Not all of Xiaomiβs features will work, for example, IR Blaster or Game Turbo).
If you do, follow this algorithm:
- Unlock the bootloader through Mi Unlock Tool (you need a Mi Account tied to the phone for at least 7 days).
- Install TWRP Recovery for your model.
- Sweep through custom firmware (for example, ArrowOS with support for Live Wallpapers).
- In the settings of the new firmware, select Style β Wallpaper β Live wallpaper.
π‘
Custom firmware is an extreme method, and 90% of Xiaomi devices have enough 1-4 methods to get dynamic wallpaper without risk to the system.
How to reduce battery consumption from live wallpaper?
Animated wallpaper eats up charge faster than static wallpapers, that's a fact, but there are ways to cut down on consumption.
| Problem. | Decision | Saving charge |
|---|---|---|
| Wallpaper always works. | Turn them off on the lock screen (Settings β Lock) | 20% |
| High brightness of animation | Set a dark theme in the wallpaper settings | 15% |
| Background processes | Add the Wallpaper App to Battery Optimization | 10% |
| 3D-effects | Turn off paralax in live wallpaper settings | 25% |
Additional life hacks:
- π Use Adaptive Brightness and set the limit to 70%.
- β±οΈ Set up a schedule: wallpaper only works during the day (in the day). KLWP There's an option).
- π΄ Turn off animations at low charge (e.g. via Tasker).
