Why does the contact photo not take up the entire screen by default?
Xiaomi deliberately limits the size of a photo when you call for several reasons:
- 📱 Ergonomics of the interface: the screen should contain the buttons of acceptance / rejection of the call, the name of the subscriber and additional options (for example, recording a conversation).
- 🎨 Design standards: MIUI Material Design is a trend that prioritizes minimalism and functionality.
- 🔄 Adaptability to different resolutions: on devices with notch or hole cameras (punch-hole), a full-screen photo can cover important elements.
But these arguments don’t convince users who are used to the “classic” kind of incoming call, and fortunately, you can get around the restrictions — and that doesn’t always require root rights or sophisticated manipulation.
Method 1: Configure using standard MIUI settings (without third-party applications)
The safest method is to use hidden options of the MIUI interface. It runs on MIUI 12-14 firmware and does not require additional software installation.
- Open the phone application (pipe icon).
- Slip on three dots in the upper right corner → select Settings.
- Go to Incoming Calls (or Calling on some models).
- Activate Full Screen Mode (or Enlarged Contact Photo) slider.
- If the option is missing, tap 5 times in a row on the Version bar at the bottom of the settings screen - this will open the hidden settings.
After activation of the photo contact will take ~70-80% of the screen (not fully, but significantly larger than the standard size) Control buttons will remain available at the bottom.
Make a backup of contacts (export to VCF)

Method 2: Using MIUI design themes

Even after using one of the methods, the photo may appear blurry or cropped.

On the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S and other models with a retractable camera, full-screen mode can conflict with proximity sensors. In this case, turn off the option of Automatic Disconnect the screen in call settings.
