Xiaomi and Redmi users often experiment with interface design by installing third-party themes from Themes. However, the result does not always meet expectations: fonts can become unreadable and icons can become incomprehensible. In this situation, there is an urgent need to return everything to its original state. Resetting the theme on Xiaomi is not just a change of picture, but restoration of functionality of the system if the custom design caused visual bugs.
The process of returning to the factory does not require root rights or a computer connection. All the necessary tools are built into the shell of MIUI or HyperOS. It is important to understand that resetting the theme does not affect your personal files, photos or contacts, but returns the system fonts and wallpaper to the state "out of the box." This is a safe operation that takes only a couple of minutes, if you know where to click.
In this article, we’ll take a look at all the methods available, from standard switching in settings to forced reset through Safe Mode if the interface is locked, learn how to properly clear the theme cache to avoid re-installation errors, and why sometimes the standard procedure doesn’t work the first time.
Basic method of discharge through the application Topics
The most obvious and often used way to get back to the standard look is to use the regular Theme app, which is where all the visual content is managed, and if your phone is stable and you just want to change design, this is the preferred method, and it allows you to gently transition from one style to another without rebooting the device.
To start, you need to start the Topic app (the brush icon). In the lower right corner of the screen is the Profile tab, designated by the person. When you click on it, you go to the Topic menu, where you select the Topic item, which will display a list of all the designs ever installed. Find a theme in the list called Classic or Default (often marked with the shield icon or at the top) and click Apply.
After applying a standard theme, the system will automatically redraw the interface. However, to make the changes fully effective, additional customization is sometimes required. For example, old wallpaper or fonts may remain if they were installed separately, in which case you should go to Settings → Lock screen and password and select the standard Xiaomi wallpaper.

Before applying a new theme, be sure to check the preview on the lock screen and desktop to make sure the watch and date widgets are readable.
It’s worth noting that in some regions of the global firmware versions, the standard theme may be called differently, such as MIUI Default. If you can’t find it on the installed list, try downloading it again from the directory by typing the word “Standard” in search, which ensures that you use exactly the configuration file that Xiaomi engineers designed for your model.
Resetting screen settings and fonts
Often users forget that a theme is a complex concept that includes not only icons, but also system fonts, sounds and even download animations. If after changing the topic the font remained strange or too small, one application of a standard theme may not be enough.
Go to Settings → Screen (or Display). Here, look for Text Size and Font. If the font is changed to a third-party, you will see a Reset button or the option to choose a standard Roboto or MI Sans font. Changing the font often solves the problem of the "floating" interface when text hits buttons or is cropped.

Safe Mode loads the Android operating system without third-party apps and, importantly for us, without custom themes. To log in to it on Xiaomi, press the power button. When the off menu appears, press and hold your finger on the Turn off (or Reboot on some versions).
Once you reboot the corners of the screen, you'll see "Safe Mode" in which the phone will automatically apply the basic design. Now you can go to the Themes app and apply the standard Classic theme while the phone is in that mode. After applying the theme, just reboot the device in the normal way.

Cleaning the data of the application Topics
Sometimes the problem is not the theme itself, but the cache or corrupted configuration files of the Theme application. If a standard reset doesn't work, or the Apply button is inactive, you need to clear the system component data, which will return the application to the state immediately after installing the firmware.
To do this, go to Settings → Apps → All apps. In the list, find the Topic app (icon with a brush). Click on it and select Clean (broom icon) and then Clear everything. Fear not, this action will not delete your personal photos or contacts, it will only reset the settings of the theme store itself.

Once the data is cleared, restart your smartphone. Themes app may require you to re-accept user agreement and region when you first start it. This is normal behavior. Now try using the Default theme again. Most of the time, this solves the hanging interface problem.

Removal of third-party launchers and modifiers
Users often confuse the MIUI theme with a third-party launcher installed from Google Play, such as Nova Launcher or Microsoft Launcher. If you installed such an application, resetting the theme in Xiaomi’s standard menu won’t bring back the old look, since a different program is running.
To test this, look at the process of changing your desktop. If you press the Home button, the system asks you which application to use, you have a third-party launcher installed, and if you want to return to your native interface, you need to delete this application or change the default settings.
Go to Settings → Applications → All Apps. Find a suspicious (non-system) application that is responsible for the desktop. Click Delete. If the delete button is inactive, go to Settings → Desktop (or Default Apps) and select System Launcher as the primary.

Solving Advertising Problems After Reset
Once you return to a standard theme, users often notice pop-up ads in system applications, not the theme, but the settings of Xiaomi’s ad services (MSA), resetting the theme could bring back standard, more aggressive ad settings if you previously disabled them.
To get rid of intrusive banners, go to Settings → Password & Security → Access to Personal Data. Find the msa service in the list and turn off the slider. The system will ask you to wait 10 seconds and confirm the action. This will turn off the main source of system advertising.

It’s also worth checking the settings of individual apps, such as Music, Video, or Explorer, and inside each of them, you have a “Get recommendations” option in your settings, which also generates advertising content on your desktop and in folders.
