The Xiaomi Mi 10 is a flagship smartphone with extensive multitasking capabilities, but the split screen feature (Split Screen) often goes unnoticed by users. Unlike Samsung or Google Pixel devices, where multitasking is brought to prominence, in MIUI it has to be activated through hidden gestures or settings. This instruction covers all working methods for the Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro and Mi 10 Ultra on the firmware versions from MIUI 12 to MIUI 14 (including global and Chinese builds).
Splitting the screen allows you to use two apps at once β for example, watching YouTube videos and texting to Telegram, or comparing prices in the browser and online store basket. However, on Xiaomi, this feature does not work with all programs: some applications (for example, games or banking services) block multitasking for security reasons. We will analyze not only standard activation methods, but also workarounds for stubborn applications, and also consider typical errors that may cause Split Screen to fail.
1. Standard method: split screen gesture
The fastest method is to use a built-in gesture, which works on all versions of MIUI for the Mi 10, but requires pre-activation in the settings. If the gesture doesn't work, it's likely the default feature is disabled.
To enable a split screen through a gesture:
- Open the first application you want to use in multitasking mode.
- Swipe your finger from the bottom up and hold your finger for 1 second, and the recent app panel will open.
- Find the app icon (its icon) at the top of the screen and click on it for a long time (about 2 seconds).
- In the menu that appears, select Split Screen (or Split Screen in English).
- The screen will split into two parts, and in the bottom half, you'll see a list of recent apps, and you'll pick the second one.
If the split screen icon is not in the app menu, it means the function is disabled in the system settings.
- π± Go to Settings. β Special facilities β System settings β Split screen.
- π§ Turn on the switch Enable split screen.
- π― Make sure that the list of supported applications indicates the programs you plan to use.
π‘
If the gesture doesnβt work the first time, try swiping your finger from the bottom of the screen at 45Β° left or right β an alternative way to call up the recent apps menu on MIUI.
2. Alternative method: through the recent appendices panel
If gestures seem uncomfortable, you can split the screen through the classic multitasking bar, which works more consistently on the Mi 10 with MIUI 13/14, where animations are optimized for larger displays.
Instructions:
- π² Open the first app (e.g. Chrome).
- π Swipe your finger from the bottom up and hold it to open the recent app dashboard.
- π Find the app icon at the top of the screen and swipe it up (don't click!) and a menu with the option "Share up" will appear.
- π After activation, select the second app from the list of recent ones.
Important: some apps (like Instagram or TikTok) can automatically fold when you try to split the screen, which is due to the limitations of the programs themselves, not the firmware Xiaomi. β3 using third-party utilities.
3.Separation of the screen through third-party applications
If the built-in methods donβt work or you need advanced features (for example, changing the proportions of windows or supporting three applications at once), you can use third-party utilities.
- π§ Split Screen Launcher β Adds the split screen button to the notification panel.
- π± Floating Apps β lets you create floating windows on top of other apps.
- π₯οΈ Island (formerly Oasis) β clones apps for parallel work (useful for two WhatsApp accounts).
Warning: split-screen applications require Overlay rights and Special Features, and on MIUI, these permissions are handed out manually:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management β [Utility name].
- Select Additional Permissions and enable Display on top of other windows.
- Return to the main settings of the application and activate Special Features.
Why do some apps not support Split Screen?
4. Adjusting proportions and window management
Once Split Screen is activated, you can resize and switch between windows. The Mi 10 has the following options:
| Action. | How to execute | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Change the proportions of windows | Pull the dividing line up/down | Minimum window size β 30% of screen height |
| Change applications | Click on the icon of two arrows in the dividing line | It doesnβt work in all versions of MIUI. |
| Close one window. | Swipe the window down or press. β headlined | The second window will automatically open to the entire screen. |
| Return to full screen mode | Pull the dividing line to the upper or lower border | Or click Home on the navigation bar. |
On the Mi 10 Ultra with curved screen, the dividing line can stick to the edges when the proportions change. To avoid this, turn off the option of edge sensitivity in the display settings.
β Update the firmware to the latest version MIUI
β Make sure both apps support multitasking
β Turn off energy saving mode (it can block background work)
β Check that the developer settings do not include forced mode Do not save actions-->
5. Solving split screen problems
If Split Screen doesnβt work, the reasons may be as follows:
β οΈ Attention: On Mi 10 with rooted firmware or custom recavery (for example, TWRP) The split screen can be turned off after the updates, in which case the function is re-activated via the ADB: adb shell settings put global multi_window_mode_enabled 1
Common mistakes and ways to eliminate them:
- π« No option "Share up" in the app menu β Check the settings in Special Opportunities (see Section 1).
- π The app folds when you try to split the screen β Try using a third-party utility or update the app.
- π΅ The gesture doesn't work. β Reboot your smartphone or reset your gesture settings in Settings β Display. β Navigation panel.
- π The split screen turns off on its own. β Turn off battery optimization for used applications.
If the problem persists, check out the MIUI version:
- On MIUI 12, a split screen may conflict with the Second Space function.
- MIUI 14 sometimes requires a reboot after the feature is turned on.
π‘
Before contacting Xiaomi Support, try resetting Special Features to factory settings, which solves 70% of Split Screen problems without losing data.
6. Hidden Opportunities: Multitasking for Advanced
The Mi 10 has additional multitasking features that are not documented in the official instructions:
Floating Windows Mode (for MIUI 13/14)
- Activate Settings β Special Options β Floating Windows.
- Open the app, then swipe down from the top edge of the screen to roll it into a floating window.
- The floating window can be moved and resized.
Quick switching between windows:
- πΉ Twice swipe the dividing line to swap apps.
- πΉ Press and hold the dividing line to open the option menu (not available in all firmware).
Use three applications at the same time (requires root):
adb shell settings put global multi_window_mode_type 1This command includes an experimental three-window mode, but can cause lags on the Mi 10 with 8GB of RAM.
7. Optimizing Performance in Multitasking Mode
Split screen increases the load on the processor and RAM. On the Mi 10 with a Snapdragon 865 processor, this usually does not cause problems, but when working with heavy applications (for example, Photoshop + Chrome with a dozen tabs), you can experience slowdowns.
- π Enable Performance Mode in Settings β Battery and productivity.
- π§Ή Clear the app cache before using Split Screen.
- π Turn off background activity of unnecessary programs in Settings β Annexes β Application management.
- π Reduce system animations: activate Developer Settings (7 times click on Version) MIUI in About Phone), then set the Windows Animation Scale and the Click on the Click 0.5x.
β οΈ Attention: With prolonged use of a split screen, the Mi 10 may overheat if the processor temperature exceeds 45.Β°C (checked in Settings) β The phone. β Take a 10-15-minute break to avoid trottling (automatic performance decline).
