Why Xiaomi Can 'Speak' Chinese and How to Fix It
Did you just unpack a new robot vacuum cleaner Xiaomi or Dreame, turn it on β and instead of the usual Russian voice heard the lines in Chinese? Or after updating the firmware menu suddenly became unclear? This problem is familiar to many owners of smart equipment from China. The reasons can be different, from regional binding of the device to a failure in settings. But the good news is that you can translate the interface and voice prompts into Russian in 90% of the cases, and often you do not even need to disassemble the vacuum cleaner.
In this article, we will discuss all the working ways to change the language, from basic settings in the Mi Home app to manually flashing alternative software. Note: the instructions are relevant for models 2020-2026, including Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro, Dreame D9, Viomi V3 and others. If your model is older, check compatibility at the end of the article.
Before you start, make sure that:
- π± You have the latest update to the Mi Home app (or Dreamehome for Dreame devices) installed)
- π Vacuum cleaner connected to Wi-Fi (without the Internet, some methods will not work)
- π Battery level not lower than 30%
Method 1: Change the language through the Mi Home app (the easiest one)
If your vacuum cleaner supports official Russian firmware, the first method will take no more than 5 minutes. This works for most models sold through official distributors in Russia and the CIS.
- Open the Mi Home app and go to the Profile tab β Settings β Region.
- Choose Russia (if China or another region is located there).
- Return to the main screen, find your vacuum cleaner and click on it.
- Go to Device Settings β General β Language.
- Select Russian from the list and confirm the change.
After that, the vacuum cleaner will reload (it may take 1-2 minutes), if there is no Russian in the list of languages, then your model requires an alternative approach (read more).
Install the latest version of Mi Home|Check the region in profile|Connect the vacuum cleaner to Wi-Fi|Charge the vacuum cleaner at least 30%-->
β οΈ Warning: If after changing the region in Mi Home, the vacuum cleaner disappeared from the list of devices, do not panic. Just reconnect it again: click Add device β Robot vacuum cleaner and follow the instructions. All the maps and settings saved will remain.
Method 2: Manual update of firmware with Russian language
If Mi Home doesnβt have a language change option, youβll need to update your firmware manually, a method that works for gray devices purchased on AliExpress or in Chinese stores, and itβs important to use only official firmware from Xiaomiβs website or trusted sources (like the 4PDA forum).
Here's how to do it:
- Download the firmware archive for your model (for example, for Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro, look for files marked ru or global).
- Unpack the archive and copy the firmware file (usually with the.pkg extension) to the microSD card.
- Insert the card into the vacuum cleaner (the connector is usually under the cover next to the power button).
- Press the power button for 5-10 seconds until you hear the beep. The vacuum cleaner will start the update.
It takes 5-15 minutes. Do not remove the memory card or turn off the vacuum cleaner during the upgrade, which can lead to the "bricking" of the device.
Where do I download the firmware?
| Model vacuum cleaner | Does the Russian support the official firmware | Do you need a hand firmware? |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro | Yes. | No (change the region is enough) |
| Dreame D9 | Yes (on the Dreamehome app) | No. |
| Viomi V3 | Partially (depending on version) | Sometimes. |
| Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum 1S | No (Chinese/English only) | Yes. |
Method 3: Use of alternative applications (for older models)
If your Released vacuum cleaner is up to 2020 (e.g. Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum 1 or Viomi V2), the official firmware may not support Russian, in which case third-party software, such as:
- π± Valetudo β an open application for managing robot vacuum cleaners (works over a local network, without the Xiaomi cloud).
- π± Dustcloud β alternative firmware with support for Russian and advanced features.
Installation of Valetudo will require:
- Connect to the vacuum cleaner by SSH (instructions are on the official website).
- Download the firmware via adb or scp.
- Install it through console commands.
This method is more complicated, but gives you full control over the device, including the Russian interface, disabling the Xiaomi cloud and access to advanced settings.
π‘
Before installing an alternative firmware, back up the original one via the command cat /misc/backup/backup.tar.gz > /tmp/backup.tar.gz (if available via SSH).
Method 4: Hardware replacement of voice module (extreme case)
If none of the software methods worked, the physical replacement of the voice chip remains, which is true for very old models (e.g., the 2016 Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum 1), where the firmware is locked and alternative software is not supported.
You'll need:
- π§ Screwdriver for disassembling the body.
- π New voice module with Russian voiceovers (you can order on AliExpress at the request "Xiaomi vacuum Russian voice moduleΒ»).
- πΉ soldering iron (if the module is not on the connector, but soldered).
Replacement process:
- Unscrew the bottom cover of the vacuum cleaner (usually 4-6 screws).
- Find a board with a speaker and voice chip (usually marked as VS1053 or WT588D).
- Carefully disconnect the old module and install a new one.
β οΈ Warning: Disassembly of the vacuum cleaner voids the warranty. If you are not sure about your soldering skills, you should contact the service center. The cost of replacing the module in the workshop: 1,500-3,000 rubles.
Frequent problems and their solutions
Even after a successful language change, there may be problems, and here are the most common ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Language changed, but voice cues remained in Chinese | Not updated voice packet | Reinstall the firmware or download a separate package with voices |
| After the update, the vacuum cleaner does not turn on | Firmware failure | Repeat the procedure with another microSD card |
| There is no language change option in Mi Home | An outdated version of the app | Update Mi Home to the latest version |
If after all the manipulations the vacuum cleaner did not βspeakβ in Russian, check:
- π Version of the firmware in Settings β About the device (must be at least 3.5.8 for most models).
- π‘ Internet connection stability (sometimes Xiaomi cloud blocks language change at weak signal).
- π§ Presence of hardware damage (for example, a faulty speaker).

If the vacuum cleaner is purchased in China, link it to Xiaomiβs Russian account before changing the language. Go to Profile β Settings β Region β Russia to do this at Mi Home and reconnect the device.
