Buyers of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones often face a confusing range of devices, especially when ordering equipment from China or buying used gadgets. The region of firmware directly affects the availability of Google services, NFC, 4G/5G frequency bands and even charging speed in some cases. The wrong version can turn a flagship into a device with limited functionality.
In this article, we will discuss how to determine exactly what market your device is intended for. We will look at software methods for checking through the settings menu, analysis of model and firmware codes, and also touch on hardware differences. Global version (Global) and Chinese (CN) are not just different interface languages, they are fundamentally different software products.
Understanding the origin of your smartphone will help you avoid problems with banking apps, Android Auto and notifications. Identifying a region is the first step before flashing or buying accessories. Let's figure out how to tell a European from a Chinese in a few minutes.
Basic differences in versions: Global, EU and CN
Before we go into technical checks, it is important to understand the manufacturerโs market splitting philosophy: The Chinese version (CN) is initially devoid of the Google Play Store and has a specific set of pre-installed apps targeting the domestic Chinese market, often missing some of the LTE bandwidths popular in Europe and Russia.
The Global Version has Google services built in, supports multiple languages and is adapted to international communication standards. There is also the European Version (EU), which is formally a subset of the global, but has its own features in the frequency set and sometimes in a bundle (for example, the presence of a charger in a box).
What is the difference between Global ROM and Global Version?
It is critical to distinguish between these concepts when buying: only the device labeled Global Version is a full-fledged international product with all the guarantees of compatibility. Chinese devices with cross-stitched global firmware (the so-called "Global ROM") can have an unlocked bootloader, which affects the operation of banking applications.
Checking the region through the smartphone settings menu
The fastest way to know the origin of a device is to look at system settings, which works on all current versions of MIUI and HyperOS shells. You don't have to install third-party software, all the information is already in the system.
Go to Settings โ About the phone. At the top of the screen, next to the MIUI or HyperOS logo, the firmware version is usually indicated. If it says "Global Stable", "EU Stable" or simply "Stable" without the CN prefix, you probably have an international version. However, Chinese firmware (China ROM) can also hide its identity if it has a multilingual package installed on it.
Note the presence of the โSecurityโ and โGoogle Servicesโ app. In Chinese firmware without modifications, Google services may be missing or hidden, and the Chinese version is also characterized by the absence of the GetApps app store (formerly the Mi Store) or its specific content.
๐ก
If the โAbout Phoneโ menu clicks on the MIUI logo and the firmware version does not contain the letters V (e.g. 14.0.3), this may indicate a Developer version or a specific region.
Also check Settings โ Settings โ Region. Although choosing a region here changes the content in the Mi Browser and Mi Video app, it doesnโt change the firmware itself. However, if your phone is โlockedโ to an operator or region (which is rare but occurs), changing this setting can cause restrictions.
Analysis of model code and assembly number
The most reliable method is to analyze the model code, and each device is assigned a unique identifier that carries information about the target market, and you can find it in the same Settings โ About Phone menu, in the "Model" line.
Model codes have a standard structure, for example, for Xiaomi 13 codes can look like this:
- ๐จ๐ณ 2211133C โ The letter "C" at the end indicates China).
- ๐ 2211133G โ The letter "G" stands for Global (Global Version).
- ๐ช๐บ 2211133E โ The letter "E" stands for Europe (European version).
- ๐ฎ๐ณ 2211133I โ The letter "I" indicates India (Indian version).
The last letter of the model code is the key. If you see "C" -- you're Chinese.G" or "E" -- safe options for use in the CIS and Europe. Indian versions ("I") are also global, but may have physical differences, such as lack of support. NFC or SIM-map.
Also, you should pay attention to the build number. MIUI" or "HyperOS version" after the digits of the OS version, there's a letter code. V14.0.5.0.TKREUXM last three letters before"XM" (here"EU") point to the firmware region."RU" โ Russia,"TR" โ Turkey,"ID" โ Indonesia, if it's standing there"CN" โ Chinese firmware.
Using the Engineering Menu and ADB for Diagnostics
For advanced users who don't have enough surface data, there are deeper validation methods, and the Engineering Menu allows you to see the modem and radio specifications, which are critical for checking frequency support.
To enter the engineering menu, open the Phone app and dial the combination ##6484## (CIT). From the menu that opens, select Version Information or SIM Card Test. Here you can see IMEI and radio module information. However, more accurate information will be provided by using the computer and the ADB debugging bridge.
Connect your smartphone to your PC, enable debugging over USB and execute the command in the terminal:
adb shell getprop ro.boot.hwcThis command will return the value of the region's hardware code. It's also useful to check the property. ro.boot.country_code. This data is read directly from the bootloader and does not depend on the operating system installed. Even if the phone has custom firmware installed, these values often remain factory values.
โ๏ธ Check through ADB
In this case, rely on visual analysis of the model code.
Table of compliance of region codes Xiaomi
For convenience, we organize the main region codes that you can find in the model or firmware name, and this table will help you quickly navigate when choosing a device in directories or when analyzing a box.
| Code. | Region | Features | Presence of NFC |
|---|---|---|---|
| CN | China | No Google, lots of Chinese software. | There's often (AliPay) |
| Global (G) | Global | Full support for Google, all languages | Got it (Google Pay) |
| EU (E) | Europe | Global analogue, LTE frequencies Cat.6+ | There is. |
| IN (I) | India | Often no NFC, plastic frame | Often not. |
| RU (R) | Russia | Analog Global, preinstalled by RuStore | There is. |
Note the Indian versions. They're often cheaper, but the lack of NFC makes contactless payments impossible, which is a critical disadvantage for many. Global versions are the gold standard, providing a balance between functionality and compatibility.

The model code on the box and settings should match, and if the settings are "Global" and the model code is "C," the firmware has been manually changed.
Problems and risks in changing the firmware region
Many users try to reflash the Chinese phone to the global version themselves, a process that comes with risks. First, when changing region (Cross-region flashing), the bootloader blocker may require a wait of 168 hours (7 days) before unlocking if the Mi Account does not warm up.
Second, installing a Global ROM on CN-hardware may cause some features to fail, such as a wide-angle camera, high-quality video calls, or the original power supply's fast-charging feature, due to differences in drivers and calibrations.
What is Anti-Rollback Protection?
And the problem with notifications is also worth mentioning: on Chinese firmware, even with a Google framework installed, the system aggressively unloads applications from memory, which causes messenger messages to arrive with a delay, and global firmware lacks this aggressive optimization.
โ ๏ธ Note: When you flash the Chinese version into the global version, you lose the manufacturer's warranty. In addition, the applications of banks may stop working due to the unlocked bootloader, which is necessary to change the region.
If you're not a power user, it's best to avoid CN-labeled devices unless you're willing to put up with the potential complications.Buying Global Version will save you nerves and time in the long run.
