Why the screen on Xiaomi doesn’t turn – and how to fix it

Did you take the Xiaomi phone horizontally and the picture stay vertical? Or vice versa, the screen spontaneously flips when you lie on the couch? The problem with auto-rotation is found even on the new models of the Redmi Note 13 and POCO F6, not to mention the old Mi A2 or Redmi 5. The reasons can be different: from accidentally disabled function to hardware malfunctions.

In this article, we will explore all the ways to deploy the screen, from basic to hidden MIUI settings, and also tell you what to do if the rotation sensor (accelerometer) fails or is not working correctly.

First, check the obvious: is there no sound/no disturb mode on (sometimes it blocks autorotation) and is there a third-party app for locking the screen (e.g. Rotation Control) if everything is clear, read on.

Method 1: Quick access button in the notification curtain

The easiest method is to use the Quick Settings Panel. It works on all Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 10 and later, including the Redmi 12, POCO X5 and Mi 11.

How to turn on the auto-turn:

• 📱 Swipe down from the top edge of the screen to open the notification curtain.
• 🔄 Find the Autoturn button (the phone icon with the arrow around it) If it's not there, swipe left to open all the panels.
• 🔘 Press the button once. If it lights up in blue, it's active.

If the button is not in the curtain:

Method 5: Reset sensor settings (if the screen rotates itself)

If the screen is rotating arbitrarily without you, the problem may be an accelerometer or a gyroscope failure.

Method 1: Through the Engineering Menu

1. Open the phone app and type in: ##6484###
2. Choose the Sensor Test → Accelerometer Sensor.
3. Put your phone on a flat surface and press Calibrate.

Method 2: Through the Compass application

• 🧭 Open the standard Compass application.
• 🔄 Rotate the phone on all axes (as shown in the hint).
• 🔧 After calibration, restart the device.

What to do if nothing helps

If none of these methods worked, check:

1. System Updates: Go to Settings → About Phone → Update MIUI. On some models (Redmi Note 8 Pro) bugs with a turn were fixed in security patches.
2. Third-party applications: Remove rotation control programs (such as Rotation Manager or Set Orientation) that may conflict with system settings.
