Are you tired of confusing important calls with regular ones? Want to make your loved one’s tune stand out? Xiaomi smartphones (including Redmi and POCO) have a built-in function for assigning unique ringtones to individual contacts — but not all users know how to use it correctly. In this article, we’ll break down all the current ways, including hidden MIUI and HyperOS settings, and also explain how to bypass typical system limitations.
The process differs depending on the firmware version: MIUI 12/13 The interface is one, and in HyperOS (which replaced the one that was created by the MIUI into 2026 We covered both options, and we added alternative methods for cases where the standard settings don't work, if you want to not just assign a tune, but also adjust the vibration or the setting. LED-Notification – you will find a solution here too.
Why can’t Xiaomi put a song in touch?
The problem is most often one of three reasons:
- 🔄 An outdated version MIUI: In the firmware older MIUI 10 The individual ringtones function was unstable or non-existent. Update the system through Settings → The phone. → Update MIUI.
- 🎵 Inappropriate audio file format: Xiaomi only supports.mp3,.m4a Files to.wav or.flac must be converted.
- 📱 Manufacturer restrictions: On some models (e.g, POCO M3 or Redmi 9A) The function is disabled in the budget versions of the firmware.
Another nuance: if the contact is synced with Google Account, the changes may not be saved due to conflict with the cloud, in which case, try disabling the sync of contacts in Settings → Accounts → Google before setting up.
Method 1: Standard MIUI settings (for versions 12–14)
This is the simplest method that works on most Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices with MIUI 12-14.
- Open the Contacts app** (an icon with a human silhouette).
- Find the right contact and tap it to open the card.
- In the upper right corner, press three dots (⋮) and select "Edit»**.
- Scroll down to the Rington block (or Call Sound in some localizations).
- Select one of the standard tunes or click Add**(+) to download your song from your phone’s memory.
- Save the changes with the “Ready” button in the top corner.
If there is no Rington* item in the editing menu, then your version of MIUI is hiding it. Go to Method 2.
File in MP3/M4A/OGG format
Duration not exceeding 30 seconds (recommended)
Volume normalized (not quieter -16 dB)
The file is copied to internal memory (not to the SD-map)
-->
⚠️ Note: Some models (e.g. Xiaomi) 11T or POCO F4) post-update MIUI 13.0.6+ To avoid this, use files weighing no more than 500 KB.
Method 2: Setup with Sound and Vibration (for HyperOS)
In HyperOS (which replaced MIUI in 2026), the logic of assigning ringtones has changed, now through central audio settings:
- Go to Settings → Sounds and vibrations.
- Select "Call Sound" (or "Rington").
- At the top of the screen, tap on the Contacts tab (near the Default tab).
- Find the right contact in the list and click on it.
- Choose a tune from the suggested ones or upload yours through Add.**
HyperOS also has the ability to assign a unique vibration to your contact, and to do so, select Vibration** from the same menu and create your template (e.g., three short signals for important calls).
| Firmware version | The path to settings | Support for custom files | Vibration for contacts |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIUI 12–14 | Contacts → Edit → Ringtone | Yes (MP3/M4A) | No. |
| HyperOS 1.0+ | Settings → Sounds → Contacts | Yes (MP3/M4A/OGG) | Yes. |
| MIUI 11 and older | Contacts → Menu → Install ringtone | Limited (standard only) | No. |
💡
If your contact is saved in SIM-map, transfer it to the phone's internal memory. Xiaomi does not allow you to assign individual ringtones to the phone SIM-contact.
Method 3: Using a file manager (for power users)
If standard methods don’t work, you can manually add a tune to the ringtones system folder, which requires accuracy, but works on 90% of Xiaomi devices:
- Download or prepare an audio file (MP3 format, up to 30 seconds, Latin name).
- Connect your phone to your PC or use a file manager (e.g., “Conductor”** from Xiaomi).
- Go to /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/ringtone/ If there is no ringtone folder, create it manually.
- Put your file there (for example, mom_call.mp3).
- Reboot the phone.
- The melody will now be available in the ringtones list when editing the contact.
Critical: the /MIUI/ringtone/ folder may not be available on some models (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro with MIUI 13.0.4), so create it yourself, but make sure the file manager has the rights to write to the system directories.
What if the MIUI folder is not displayed?
Method 4: Third-party applications (if nothing helps)
If the system methods don't work, third-party utilities will come to the rescue, and we tested 5 popular applications and selected the two most reliable ones:
- 🎶 Zedge (free, Russian): App with a database of ringtones and the ability to assign them to contacts. After installation: Open Zedge and find your favorite tune» → «Contact us. Select a subscriber from the list.
Cons: Requires access to contacts and can display ads.
Ringtone Maker
It allows you to crop any song from your library and assign it to a contact. MP3-The file, but Xiaomi doesn’t see it».
Warning: Some applications (such as MP3 Cutter) may request unnecessary permissions (access to SMS or geolocation).
⚠️ Note: On Xiaomi with HyperOS, the Zedge app may conflict with system settings. If it doesn't work after assigning a ringtone through Zedge, clear the Contacts cache** in Settings → Annexes → Application management.
How to check if the ringtone is correctly assigned?
To make sure that the individual melody works, follow the following steps:
- Ask a friend to call you from the number the ringtone is set up for.
- Or use a second phone to call yourself.
- If the melody is not played: Check if the phone is worth it in Do Not Disturb** (Settings → Do Not Disturb). Make sure the file is not deleted from memory (sometimes files disappear after cleaning the cache). Reboot the device - this resets the temporary errors of the sound engine.
If the ringtone is triggered but is too quiet, check the volume settings in Settings → Sounds and vibrations → Volume. Sometimes Media and Call are adjusted separately.
💡
On some Xiaomi models (such as the Redmi Note 12 Pro+), custom ringtones do not work in Game Turbo mode.
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
Even after you set it up properly, users are faced with typical problems, and we've collected the most common and corrective ways to do this.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Rington resets after rebooting | Conflict with MIUI optimization | Turn off "Car Cleaning"** in Settings → Memory |
| The melody plays, but it breaks. | The file is corrupted or too long | Cut the file to 20-30 seconds in Ringtone Maker |
| No Rington option in contact | Outdated firmware or regional version of MIUI | Update the system or use Zedge |
| Rington works, but vibration is standard | MIUI Limitation | Set up vibration through Settings → Special features → Vibration |
If none of the solutions worked, try resetting the Contacts app settings:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Find “Contacts” and select “Storage”.
- Click on “Clear Data”** (not cache!).
- Reboot the phone and reset the ringtone.
This method resets all individual contact settings, so use it as a last resort.
