Animated images (GIFs) are no longer just fun, they have become part of the visual language of communication. On Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI or HyperOS firmware, you can add a GIF in a dozen ways, from live wallpaper to chat reactions. But not all methods are equally convenient, and some require hidden settings or third-party applications. In this article, we will analyze 5 proven methods that work on models from Redmi Note 10 to Xiaomi 14 Ultra, taking into account the features of different versions of the firmware.
It’s important to understand that the ability to work with GIFs depends on two factors: the MIUI/HyperOS version and the device model. For example, on flagships (Xiaomi 13T, Mix Fold 3) advanced wallpaper animation features are available, whereas on budget Redmis, it may require a workaround. We tested instructions on current firmware (2023-2026), but if your Released phone is before 2020, some methods may not work – this will be warned separately.
1. Live wallpaper from GIF: the official way without root
The most obvious option is to use the GIF as an animated wallpaper. In MIUI 12-14 and HyperOS, this feature is built in, but hidden in an unobvious place. You do not need root rights or ADB, but there are restrictions: the maximum file size is 10 MB, and the animation duration should not exceed 15 seconds (otherwise the system will trim the GIF).
To establish GIF-wallpaper:
- 📁 Download the GIF to your phone's memory (Downloads folder or Pictures) and support.gif and.apng formats.
- 🖼️ Click the empty space on the main screen → Choose "Wallpaper» → «My wallpaper».
- 🔍 Scroll down to the section "Live wallpaper» → Click "Add live wallpaper».
- 📂 Choose the downloaded one. GIF-The system will suggest cropping the frame - use the two-finger zoom to fine-tune the frame.
- ✅ Click “Install” and select where to apply: Home screen, Lock screen, or both.
Download the GIF with a resolution not higher than 1920×1080
Cut to 10-15 seconds (use Ezgif or GIPHY>)
Rename the file in Latin (Cyrillic may cause an error)
Check that the file is not in the archive (unpack if necessary)

⚠️ Note: On some models (Redmi) 9A, Poco M3) If you see a quick discharge, go back to the static wallpaper or reduce the brightness of the screen, you can increase your battery consumption by 5-12.
| Xiaomi model | Support for live wallpaper | Max, size of GIF. | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13/14 series | ✅ Yes) | 15MB | APNG support and smooth animation |
| Redmi Note 12/11 | ✅ Yes (MIUI 14) | 10MB | Can brake at high FPS |
| Poco F5/X5 | ✅ Yes. | 12MB | It works better with optimized gifs. |
| Redmi 9/10 (2020–2021) | ⚠️ Partially. | 5MB | Trimming to 720p is required |
2.GIF in keyboard: quick answers in chat rooms
If you communicate frequently in instant messengers, the built-in Xiaomi keyboard (or Google Gboard) allows you to send gifs right while typing. This method works in all applications: WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber and even SMS. The main advantage is that you do not need to search for a file in the gallery: Gifs are downloaded from the Internet for keywords.
How to set up:
- Open any input field (for example, chat in Telegram).
- Touch the icons 😊 (emojis) on the keyboard.
- Go to the GIF tab (an icon that says “GIPHY” or “Tenor”).
- Enter the request in English (for example, “funny cat”) and select the GIF you like.
If the tab with gifs is missing:
- 🔧 Go to Settings. → System system → Language and input → Virtual keyboard.
- 📱 Choose your keyboard (Gboard or Xiaomi Keyboard).
- 🎬 Enable the "Show" option GIF» or "Mediapoic».

⚠️ Note: When using the mobile Internet download gifs from GIPHY/Tenor Traffic consumption (on average) 2–5 If you have a limited rate, turn off autoplay in the settings of the messenger:
In Telegram: Settings → Data and Memory → Autoplay Media → Select “Never” for mobile network.
3. Deep Customization: GIFs in Notifications and Icons
For advanced users, Xiaomi offers a hidden feature called animated notification icons. This doesn’t work on all models, but if your phone supports Always-on Display (AOD), you can make the GIF appear on a locked screen, such as when you receive a message from a particular contact.
Instructions for MIUI 14/HyperOS:
- Download the GIF and rename it to notification_anim.gif.
- Put the file in the folder: /sdcard/MIUI/theme/custom_notification/ (If there is no folder, create it manually).
- Go to Settings → Always-on Display and Lock → Notification Style.
- Select “Castomized” and apply your GIF.
How to check for AOD support on your model?
⚠️ Note: Not all GIFs are suitable for notifications:
- 📏 Size: 200×200 pixels (for icons) or 400×200 (notice-bar).
- ⏱️ Duration: no more than 3 seconds (otherwise the animation will be cut off).
- 🎨 Format: only GIF (transparently).
Third-party applications: enhanced capabilities
If the built-in MIUI features aren't enough, you can use third-party tools, and we tested 5 popular apps and selected the two most stable ones:
| Annex | Functions | Pluses | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| GIF Live Wallpaper | Live wallpaper from GIF/video | 4K support, speed adjustment | Advertising, paid version for 199 ₽ |
| Zedge | Ready-made animated wallpaper | Large library optimized for Xiaomi | Requires registration for downloading |
How to install wallpaper with GIF Live Wallpaper:
- Download the app from Google Play and open it.
- Click on “Select GIF” and select a file from your phone’s memory.
- Set up: 🔄 Loop mode (looping), ⏹️ Playback Speed (Playback Speed), 🖼️ Crop (slice under screen).

💡
If the wallpaper is slowing down, try reducing the FPS to 24-30 fps in the application settings. This will reduce the load on the processor and save battery power.
⚠️ Note: Some apps (e.g. Video Live Wallpaper) request permission to Overlay over other windows. MIUI Optimization is a system service Xiaomi, which blocks background processes:
Go to Settings → Apps → Permissions → Special Access → Overlay over other windows and enable permission for your wallpaper app.
5. GIF in messengers: from Telegram to Viber
Each messenger handles GIFs in its own way. Telegram and VK can send files up to 50 MB, while WhatsApp limits GIFs to 3 MB (compresses to an unreadable state if exceeded).
Telegram
The most flexible messenger to work with GIF:
- 📤 To send a GIF as a file (without compression), press it in the gallery → «Send» → select "File».
- 🔍 To search for GIFs in chat enter @gif + request, «@gif funny dog»).
- ⭐ To save the GIF from the chat, click on it → «Save it to the gallery».
Here, the GIFs shrink to 480p, but there is a workaround:
- 📥 Download the GIF to your phone.
- 🖼️ Open the chat room. → Attach the file as a “Document” (not a “Gallery»).
- ⚠️ The recipient will see it as a file, not as an animation in a chat room.
💡
In VK Messenger and Viber, GIFs are automatically converted to MP4 video format when sent. To avoid this, use the Send as a File function.
6 Problem Solving: Why the GIF Doesn't Work
If the gif is not playing or is displayed as a static image, check the following points:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Gif's not moving on wallpaper | Too high resolution or FPS | Resave the GIF via Ezgif with parameters: 800×600, 20 FPS |
| Error "File is not supported" | Incorrect format or corrupted file | Convert to GIF-89a via ezgif.com |
| Gif is cut off when sent | Restriction of the messenger (for example, WhatsApp) | Send as a “Document” or use Telegram |
If the problem persists, try:
- Reboot your phone (sometimes MIUI forgets the animation cache).
- Clear the cache of the Wallpaper app or messenger: Settings → Apps → Application Management → [Title] → Storage → Clear the cache
- Update the firmware: older versions of MIUI (below 12.5) have bugs with APNG playback.
