Personalizing a mobile device is not just a matter of aesthetics, but also an important element of functionality. When a phone rings, especially if it is lying down or in your pocket, it is a visual identifier that allows you to instantly know who is trying to contact you. Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones often face the need to quickly adjust the display of subscribers, but the interface of the shell MIUI or HyperOS has its own features that differ from stock Android.
Installing an avatar for a specific phone number makes it easier to navigate the phone book and make the communication process more convenient. This is especially true for people who are actively communicating with business or have a large number of contacts in the list. Modern AMOLED and IPS screens used in Chinese brand devices are capable of transmitting colors with high accuracy, so a high-quality image will look bright and clear.
In this article, we will take a look at all the available ways to assign a photo to a subscriber, from standard methods through the Contacts app to using cloud services, learn how to avoid common synchronization errors and how to configure the display of images when incoming full-screen calls.
Image Preparation and Format Requirements
Before you start the technical part of the process, you need to make sure that the source file meets certain criteria. Android system, which is the basis of Xiaomi firmware, is quite flexible in terms of supported formats, but for the correct display of thumbnails in the call list and on the lock screen, it is better to use optimized files.
The most versatile format remains JPEG, which provides good quality at a relatively small file size.PNG and WebP formats are also supported, however, the latter may not be displayed correctly on older versions of the MIUI shell. If you plan to use live wallpaper or animated avatars, make sure that your smartphone model supports this feature, since on budget devices (Redmi A series), animation can be disabled by the manufacturer to save resources.
Photo resolution also plays a role. Although the system automatically scales the image to a round or square area, the source is better chosen with an aspect ratio of 1:1. The optimal is considered to be a resolution of 500x500 pixels and higher. Too small pictures will look blurry (βpixelβ), and excessively large (for example, 4K) can slightly increase the load time of the phone book interface.
β οΈ Warning: Avoid using small-scale photos in the center of the frame. When cropped under a round avatar, important parts of the face or object may be lost, making contact unrecognizable during an incoming call.
It is recommended to prepare several options for different categories of contacts: business partners, relatives, delivery services, which will help to structure the phone book and navigate it faster.
π‘
Use editor apps to frame a photo in a 1:1 square before uploading to the phone book β this ensures that the face does not crop when displayed.
Standard method through the Contacts app
The easiest and fastest method that doesnβt require an internet connection or third-party software is to use an embedded app. In Xiaomi smartphones, it can be simply called βContactsβ or βPhoneβ, depending on the regional firmware (Global, Chinese, EEA).
First, you have to open the app and find the right subscriber in the list, and if you have a lot of contacts, you can use the search bar at the top of the screen, and then when you open the contact card, the system will suggest adding the missing data, including a photo.
The algorithm of actions is as follows:
- π± Open the Contacts or Phone application and go to the tab with the list of subscribers.
- π Find the right person, click on her name to go to the detailed information.
- ποΈ Click on the pencil icon (Edit) or the "Change" button, usually located at the bottom of the screen or in the menu.
- πΌοΈ Touch a gray circle with a human silhouette or a camera icon at the top of the edit screen.
- πΈ Select the source of the image: "Gallery", "Files" or take a picture immediately.
βοΈ Pre-conservation checks
Once you select a photo, the system will suggest you crop the image, move the frame to highlight the desired area, and press "Done" or "Save".
If you have multiple numbers for a single person (e.g., Mobile, Worker, Home), the photo you set to the main contact is usually automatically applied to all the linked numbers, but in some cases, especially when synchronized with different accounts, you may need to manually install each number separately.
Using a Google account to sync
One of the most reliable ways to store contacts is by linking them to a Google account, which ensures that when you lose your phone, flash it, or switch to a new Xiaomi device (or any other Android smartphone), all photos and numbers will be restored automatically.
When creating or editing a contact, please note the "Account" or "Save to" field if you choose "Phone" or"SIM-Map, photo will only be stored in the memory of the current device. When you select a Google account (your email), the data will go to the cloud.
The benefits of using Google Cloud:
- βοΈ Automatically update your photo on all devices that log in to your account.
- π The ability to edit the contact directly through the browser on the computer in the service Google Contacts.
- π‘οΈ Protection against data loss when resetting smartphone settings to factory.
To change a photo from the web, go to contacts.google.com, find a subscriber, click on an avatar, and upload a new image. In a few minutes, if you have the Internet, the photo will appear on Xiaomi's phone.
β οΈ Note: If you edit the contact saved on SIM-Add a picture, you can not add a picture. SIM-The cards have limited memory and do not support storing graphics files. First, copy the contact to your phone or Google account.
Sync may not be instantaneous. If you uploaded a photo on your computer and it didn't appear on your phone, try opening the Contacts app, clicking on three dots in the corner (Menu) and selecting Update or Sync. You can also go to Settings β Accounts and Sync β Google and force your contacts to sync.
Setup of the photo display on the full screen
Users often complain that even after setting up a high-quality photo, it is displayed in a small circle in the center of the screen during an incoming call. This is standard behavior of the system, but Xiaomi phones with a MIUI shell have the option to include a full-screen photo.
To activate this feature, you need to go to the theme or phone book settings. The path may vary slightly depending on the software version, but the overall algorithm remains the same. Full-screen photos make the call more informative and beautiful, especially on modern bezel-less displays.
Instructions for inclusion:
- Open the Themes app (standard Xiaomi app).
- Go to the profile (the person icon at the bottom right) and select βSet up themesβ.
- Find the option "Full screen photo" or "Caller ID".
- Activate the switch and select the display style (e.g., "Default" or "Blurr").
You can also have settings inside the Phone app itself. Click on three menu bars β Settings β Incoming calls. This can be a full-screen contact photo option. If you can't turn it on, you can use third-party apps from Google Play, such as Truecaller or dedicated dialers, which completely replace the caller interface.
Why isn't the whole screen picture?
It is worth noting that on some models with a cutout for the camera ("bangs") or a hole in the screen, the system software can forcibly reduce the display area of the photo so as not to overlap important interface elements or sensors.
Creating contact groups with a shared photo
For workflows or personal and business communication, Xiaomi can use groups to organize workflows, or to share personal and business communication, so you can create a Family, Work or Sports Hall group and assign each of them a unique icon.
This helps you visually group your log calls and find the right categories more quickly, and while a group photo doesn't replace a subscriber's individual photo, it's a great marker if you don't have a personal avatar installed.
How to create a group and add a photo:
- π In the Contacts app, go to the Groups tab or click Create a Group".
- βοΈ Give the group a name, like, "Fitness").
- πΌοΈ Click on the camera icon next to the group name and select an image from the gallery.
- β Add contacts to this group from the list available.
| Type of group | Recommended photo | Purpose of use |
|---|---|---|
| Family | A common photo of all family members | Quickly identify important calls |
| Work. | Company logo or office | Separation of working and personal time |
| Services/Services | Icon of a tool or service | Identification of couriers, taxis, services |
| Friends. | Photo from a party or hobby | Social categorization |
Groups are especially useful for setting up Do Not Disturb modes. You can set up your phone so that it only misses calls from the Family group at night, ignoring the rest of the calls.
Solution: Photos not displayed or reset
Despite the simplicity of the procedure, Xiaomi users may face a number of technical problems, and it often happens that the photo is installed, but the call screen shows a gray silhouette, or the image disappears after a reboot.
One of the common causes is the conflict between the local copy of the contact and the cloud. If the contact is stuck in the cache of the system, the new image will not apply, in which case the cleaning of the data of the Contacts application (not to be confused with the deletion of the numbers themselves) helps.
To clean the cache, perform the following actions:
Settings β Applications β All Apps β Contacts β Storage β Clear cacheIf that doesn't work, try deleting the contact and re-create it by saving it to your Google account, and the problem may be access rights, and make sure that Contacts and Phone are allowed to access the storage (Photos and Media).
β οΈ Note: When cleaning data (not just cache, but "clear all") of the Contacts app, you may lose numbers if they are not synced to the cloud. Always check sync status before radical actions.
Another reason is the file format: If the photo weighs more than 5-10 MB or has a non-standard color profile (e.g., CMYK instead of RGB), the system may ignore it when trying to install it. Convert the image to a standard sRGB JPEG.

The main reason for the disappearance of the photo is to maintain contact with the SIM-Map or local storage without backup. Always use your Google account for security.
