Why you need a flashlight on a locked screen and why it is not by default
Have you ever tried to turn on a flashlight on Xiaomi without unlocking your phone? If so, you know how annoying it is: you have to type a pin code, use Face. ID It's a fingerprint, and time goes out, especially when your hands are busy or you're in the dark. MIUI, Technically, it is not compromised by security.
The reason why the flashlight button is not on the lock screen is rooted in MIUIβs philosophy: developers are looking to minimize the number of active elements on the locked screen to reduce the risk of accidental taps. However, for many users, convenience is more important than theoretical danger. Fortunately, there are workarounds, from hidden settings to third-party widgets that do not require root rights or complex manipulation.
In this article, weβll look at three proven methods that work on most Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices (including the MIUI 12-15 models).
Method 1: The flashlight widget via lock screen settings (without third-party applications)
The easiest method is to add a flashlight widget directly to the lock screen via standard MIUI settings. It works on most devices starting with MIUI 12, but may not be available on some budget models (e.g. Redmi 9A or POCO C31).
Instructions:
- π± Open the Settings. β Lock screen.
- π Scroll down to the section βlock screen widgetsβ** and click on it.
- β In the list of available widgets, find the flashlight** (if not available, go to method 2).
- π Drag the widget into the active area (usually the bottom of the screen).
- π‘ Now, when you lock the phone, swipe left - a flashlight button will appear.
β οΈ Note: On some firmware, the flashlight widget may conflict with other elements (such as the weather widget). If the button doesn't appear after adding, try removing extra widgets or restarting your phone.

Make sure the lock screen is not protected by a pattern lock (can block widgets)

Method 2: Quick flashlight activation via Google Assistant (works on all Xiaomi)
If you don't have a flashlight widget in your firmware, you can use Google's voice assistant, which is universal and works even on older versions of MIUI, but requires pre-configuration.
How to set up:
- π€ Make sure that Google Assistant is installed and activated (download from Play Market if it isnβt available).
- π§ Go to Settings. β Annexes β Application management β Google and enable permission to βDisplay on top of other windowsΒ»**.
- π£οΈ Activate the voice assistant with the βOK, Googleβ command** (or set up activation from the lock screen in the Assistant settings).

πΉ Pros of the method: works on any device, does not require changes in the system.
πΈ Cons: you need to say the command out loud (inconvenient in public places), the assistant may not work with a weak Internet.

If the voice assistant doesnβt recognize the command, try to reframe: βSwitch on the light,β βLight the flashlight,β or βActivate the flashlight.β
Method 3: Third-party applications with lock screen support (for advanced users)
