Many users of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones have faced an unfortunate situation at least once: an important message came, you were distracted for a second, and when you looked at the screen again, it disappeared. Accidentally swiping or closing the application erases the traces from the curtain, leaving only guesses about who wrote or what resembled a calendar. Fortunately, the shell of MIUI and its new version of HyperOS has a feature that not everyone knows about: Notification Log.
This tool works like a black box on your smartphone, keeping all incoming alerts even after they've been cleared in the curtain. Unlike a standard photo gallery or call history, this section is hidden from the eyes of the average user and requires activation. Enabling the Notification Log does not require superuser rights (Root) and is available on all modern models of the brand. Understanding how to manage this feature will allow you to never lose important confirmation codes or messages again.
In this article, we will examine in detail the algorithm of actions for turning on the hidden menu, look at the differences in operation on different versions of the Android operating system and find out what limitations exist in this tool. You will learn not only to view, but also to correctly adjust priorities so that the system stores only the really necessary data without overloading the device memory with unnecessary digital noise.
What is a Notification Log and How Does It Work?
Notification History is a system component of the Android operating system that has been significantly improved in versions 11, 12 and 13. On Xiaomi smartphones, this feature is integrated into the overall security and privacy structure. The principle of its operation is to continuously log all incoming events that the system classifies as notifications. Even if you swipe the plaque to the left or click Clear All, a copy of this event is stored in a special hidden storage.
It's important to understand the difference between a regular list of running apps and an event log. The standard curtain shows active processes that need attention right now. The log works as an archive that contains data about what has already happened. It can be the time of arrival of an SMS, the text of a message from a messenger (if it was not hidden by the privacy settings), or the name of the application that tried to contact you. The system stores this data for a limited time, usually 24 hours to a day, after which the old records are automatically deleted to free up resources.
β οΈ Note: The Notification Log is not a classical spying tool; it does not store deleted messages within the apps themselves (for example, if a message is deleted in Telegram, only the fact of notifying it will remain in the log, but not its new state).
This mechanism is directly dependent on MIUI energy saving settings. Aggressive battery optimization can sometimes suspend system services, which can theoretically lead to gaps in the history record, although in practice this is rare.
How to Enable Notification Log on MIUI and HyperOS
By default, the notification history feature on Xiaomi smartphones is most often disabled in order to save battery power and preserve privacy. To start using the archive, you need to manually activate the corresponding switch in the settings menu. The path to this option may vary slightly depending on the version of the shell, but the logic remains the same.
To activate the function, perform the following actions:
- π± Open the main menu settings of your smartphone Xiaomi.
- π Go to Notifications and Status (in some versions of Notifications and Control Center).
- π Find the Notification Log or Notification History.
- π’ Activate the slider opposite this item, moving it to the position "OnΒ».
Once turned on, the system will start recording all incoming events. In some versions of HyperOS, the path can be hidden deeper: Settings β Passwords and Security β Privacy β Special Permissions β Access to Notifications. Here you can see a list of applications that are allowed to read notifications, but the history switch itself is usually in the main notification menu.
βοΈ Verification of activation of the function
Itβs worth noting that on very old versions of MIUI (based on Android 9 and below), the native story function may not be available, and in such cases, the system relies solely on third-party solutions or specific application functionality.
Where to find and how to view stored data
Once the function is activated, the question arises: where exactly to look for saved records? The browsing interface may not be obvious, since Xiaomi does not display a separate icon for this on the desktop.
The most reliable way to view it is to go back to Settings β Notifications and Status β Notification Log. When you click on this item, you will see a list of all events in the last 24 hours. It displays the time of arrival, the app icon and the notification text. If the notification was deleted by the user, it may be marked βDeletedβ next to it or it will simply be in the general list without the status βReadβ.
There is also a quick way to access via the settings of a particular application:
- π Go to Settings. β Annexes β All applications.
- π² Select the desired application (such as Telegram or WhatsApp).
- π Click on the Notifications item.
- π At the bottom of the screen, you can see a link Latest Notifications or a log that will take you to a filtered event list for this app only.
β οΈ Note: The notification text containing sensitive data (bank codes, passwords) can be hidden with asterisks or replaced with βContent hiddenβ if the security settings of the phone include protection of the content of notifications.
Viewing history does not affect the status of messages in the messengers themselves, so if you read the notice in the journal, you will not mark the message as read in the sender app itself.
Why can history be empty?
Configure filters and exceptions for applications
Storing the history of all notifications can turn into chaos if filters are not set up. Store promotional mailings, game notifications and system spam will quickly fill the log, making it difficult to find important information. MIUI allows you to flexibly manage which applications can store their notifications in the archive.
To fine-tune it, go to the notification management menu, and here you will see a list of all installed applications, you can set individual settings for each of them, and it is recommended that you leave a history record on only for mission-critical services: banking applications, instant messengers for work, system reminders and delivery services.
The main settings for each application:
- π« Blocking: Complete ban on displaying and recording notifications.
- π No sound: The notification will come and log in, but the phone won't vibrate or make a sound.
- π Important: Priority display and guaranteed record in history even when the power saving mode is on.
You should also pay attention to smart sorting settings, and some versions of the shell include Important Notifications, which automatically detects significant events, but the algorithms don't always work correctly, so manually controlling the exception list gives a more predictable result.
π‘
Turn off the history record for social media and news aggregators, which will significantly reduce visual noise in the magazine and allow you to quickly find really important missed messages from colleagues or delivery services.
Comparison of features on different versions of Android
Notification functionality is directly dependent on the version of the Android operating system that the MIUI or HyperOS shell is based on. With each update, Google makes changes to the notification API, which affects the ability to log them.
| Android version | MIUI/HyperOS version | The depth of history | Features of work |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android 10 | MIUI 11-12 | Absent or limited | Third-party software or ADB is required |
| Android 11 | MIUI 12.5 - 13 | 24 hours. | Basic entry, no grouping. |
| Android 12 | MIUI 13 - 14 | 24 hours. | Improved stability, protection against failures |
| Android 13-14 | HyperOS / MIUI 14+ | Up to 7 days (depending on memory) | Advanced filters, integration with widgets |
Older Android users may find that the standard log is not saved after a device reboot. Newer versions of HyperOS have changed the storage architecture to allow logs to be saved longer and restored even after short-term system failures.
If you have an Android 10 or lower device and the feature is not on the menu, the only legal way to implement this feature is to use third-party launchers or specialized notifier applications that have their own permissions to read system logs.
The Solution: Why History Is Not Preserved
Despite the feature enabled, users sometimes face a situation where the story is not kept or prematurely cleared. Most often the problem lies in the aggressive operation of Xiaomiβs energy saving system, which βkillsβ background processes, considering them inactive, this is especially true for models with a small amount of RAM.
To fix the problem, add the system notification service to the battery exception list. Go to Settings β Advanced Settings β Battery and Performance. Find the system processes associated with notifications (often hidden or called βSystem Servicesβ), and set the βNo Limitsβ mode, which will prevent the system from forcibly shutting down the logging process.
β οΈ Warning: Clearing the Settings app cache or resetting the app settings to factory settings can result in the complete removal of accumulated notification history.
Another reason could be overflow of dedicated memory. Although text takes up little space, thousands of metadata records can reach the limit. The system automatically deletes the oldest records, but if there is critically little space, a new one can stop writing. Regularly check the free space in the storage of your smartphone.

The stable operation of the Notification Log depends not only on the inclusion of the function, but also on the correct settings of energy saving. Without excluding system processes from the energy saving mode, history can be conducted intermittently.
Data security and confidentiality
The inclusion of a notification log raises security concerns, which can store two-factor authentication codes, private messages and other sensitive information, and anyone who gets unlocked access to your phone will be able to read that data even if you have removed it from the curtain.
To protect yourself, use the Hiding Content feature on the locked screen, in which case the log will only show the name of the application, but not the text of the message, and it is also recommended to set an additional password or use biometrics to log into the Settings section, although standard MIUI means cannot block access specifically to the Notification Log.
Remember, history is stored locally on the device. When selling or transferring a phone to a new owner, make sure to completely reset your settings (Wipe data) to destroy all logs. Simply deleting applications or files may not be enough to completely erase system logs in some scenarios.
