How to reduce the sensitivity of the screen on Xiaomi: solutions for MIUI and HyperOS

Many owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones periodically face an obsessive problem: the screen responds to the slightest touches that the user did not even plan to make. Often, high sensitivity is not a bug, but a consequence of using a protective film or glass, or a result of static electricity. The digitizer can read signals that the human finger does not emit, and our task is to filter out these extra signals using software methods without damaging the hardware of the device.

Standard display settings and glove mode

The first place to look for a user who wants to reduce false positives is the basic menu of screen settings. In recent firmware versions, Xiaomi hides some options, but key switches remain available. The main tool to influence the response of the touchscreen is the mode of operation in gloves. Paradoxically, turning it on or off dramatically changes the threshold of sensor activation.

If you have a thick protective glass on, or you use your phone in mittens a lot, the Gloves mode increases sensitivity, causing the screen to respond to less accurate touches. If your goal is to lower sensitivity to avoid accidental taps in your pocket or with trembling hands, this mode should be turned off, usually located along the Settings → Screen → Gloves mode.

The most effective way to influence the touchscreen is to log into an engineering test menu known as the CIT (Customer Integration Test), which is designed for service centers, but is also available to ordinary users through a special dial, where you can not only check the performance of the sensor, but also start the procedure for recalibrating it, which often solves the problem of a walking cursor.

To enter the menu, you need to open the Phone app (caller) and dial the code ##6484##. If the code does not work (it can be blocked on some global firmware versions), you can try an alternative path: Settings → About phone → Version of the kernel (you need to press 5-7 times quickly). Once in the CIT menu, find Touchpanel or Touchscreen Test.

Inside the test, you're going to be asked to swipe across all the grid cells, and it's not just a test, in some versions of the firmware, the system automatically updates the calibration data after you pass the test, and if you see that in certain areas of the screen, the lines are drawn by themselves or not drawn when you touch, it's a signal that you need hardware repair or glass replacement.

There is also a hidden test, not available on all models, that allows you to reset the touchscreen settings to factory sensitivity parameters. Inside, you'll find sliders that regulate your touch response, usually two: one for the area around the Shooting button (or similar basic action), the other for the area of movement (joystick), and the reduction of the value of these sliders makes the screen less susceptible to light touch, requiring more confident pressing, which is ideal for games where accuracy is important, not speed of reaction.

⚠️ Note: Game Turbo settings are only used within the apps running through it. In the normal Android interface or in other programs, these settings will not work, since this is a software input filter, and not a change in voltage on the touchscreen.

Why does the screen behave differently in games?
In games, the system prioritizes the touch sampling rate by ignoring some random-press protection filters to ensure minimal latency, so Game Turbo settings are critical for gamers.

Game Turbo also has an "Edge Block" or "anti-mistouch" feature, which activates invisible buffer zones on the sides of the screen, ignoring any touches in those areas, often more effective than global sensitivity reduction, because it allows you to keep the center of the screen responsive.

Special features and protection against accidental pressing

Deep in the Android system settings, there are features that are designed for people with disabilities, but they can also be useful for reducing sensitivity, including filtering input and delaying re-pressing. These settings are located in the Settings → Advanced Settings → Special features.

So, you should look at Touch and hold delay, or similar retention time settings, and by increasing the time it takes to record a long press, you make the interface less nervous. While this doesn't reduce the physical sensitivity of the sensor, it changes the logic of Long Press event processing, which is often perceived by the user as a decrease in the overall sensitivity of the interface.

Another important parameter is Pocket mode, which is to make sure it's activated, and this feature uses a proximity sensor and an accelerometer to lock the screen when the phone is in a dark confined space (pocket), and if the sensor is contaminated, the phone may not lock the screen, and the high sensitivity of the touchscreen will lead to chaotic actions.

It could be a touchscreen plume that has departed from the board, or the failure of the controller itself, in which case the software setting of the screen sensitivity on Xiaomi will not help, and you will need to visit the service center.

Why does Xiaomi’s screen react to water?
