Why Xiaomi could be a new region and what risks it poses
Xiaomi smartphones with firmware MIUI automatically determine the region at first inclusion based on SIM-card GPS. However, sometimes users need to change it manually, for example, to access Google Pay in another country, install regional applications or bypass geo-blocking in the Mi Store.
The manufacturer limits this feature for several reasons: First, some Xiaomi models (e.g., for the Chinese market) do not physically support changing the region through the standard menu - this is embedded in the firmware. Second, changing the region can lead to resetting, loss of data in some applications (e.g., Mi Fit or Xiaomi Cloud), and even blocking individual functions if the device was purchased as part of affiliate programs (like the Redmi Note 11T 5G for India).
In this article, weβll look at all the current ways to change regions, from official to technical workarounds, including ADB and modified firmware, but first letβs look at which settings depend on the region and what exactly will change after the procedure.
What changes when you change region to Xiaomi
The region in MIUI affects not only the interface language, but also a number of system parameters:
- π± Available apps in the Mi Store: each region has its own set of pre-installed and recommended programs, for example, in India you will see Paytm and JioSaavn, and in Europe you will see Deezer and SkyTicket.
- π³ Contactless payments: Google Pay and Mi Pay may require the same region of the device and the credit card.
- π‘ Network frequency bands: some models (e.g, POCO X5 Pro) automatically restricts the supported LTE-ranges depending on the region.
- π Privacy Policy: EU has stricter data collection rules than Asia.
- π Date/time formats and regional holidays in the calendar.
It doesn't change.
- β Hardware limitations (for example, maximum charging power).
- β Android version or MIUI (Although updates may be delayed for some regions).
- β Physical characteristics of the screen or camera.
Official method: change the region through the settings MIUI
The easiest method is to use the built-in region change feature available on most global versions of MIUI, but it doesnβt work on all models, and devices for the Chinese market (with CN firmware) often donβt have this option.
Instructions for MIUI 12-14 (relevant to Redmi Note 12 Pro+, Xiaomi 13 Lite, POCO F5, etc.):
- Open the Settings. β The phone.
- Tap the MIUI version 7-10 times until the notification βYouβve become a developer!β appears.
- Return to the main settings menu and select Additional settings β Region.
- In the list, find the right country (for example, Russia, Germany, India) and confirm the choice.
- Reset the device.
If Region is not on the menu, your model does not support the official shift, and alternative methods will have to be used (see the following sections).
βοΈ Preparations for regional change
β οΈ Note: On some devices (e.g. Redmi) 10A for Indonesia) after changing the region through the settings may lose support for local LTE-Before the procedure, check the compatibility with the operator on the FrequencyCheck website.
Change region through ADB (for advanced users)
If the standard method is not available, you can use Android Debug Bridge (ADB), a debugging tool through your computer, which works on most models, including the Xiaomi 12T, POCO X4 GT and Black Shark 5, but requires activation of the developer mode and connection to the PC.
Step-by-step:
- Install. ADB-computer-driver.
- Turn on your smartphone Debugging by USB (Settings β About Phone β MIUI Version β 7 taps β Additional settings β Developer Parameters β Debugging by USB).
- Connect the device to the PC and enter in the command line:
adb shell settings put global device_provisioned 1
adb shell settings put secure user_setup_complete 1
adb shell am start -n com.android.settings/.Settings$DeviceInfoSettingsActivity
adb shell am start -n com.android.settings/.Settings$SystemSettingsActivityAfter you execute the commands, a hidden Region section will appear in the settings. Select the desired country and restart the device.
| Xiaomi model | Does he support ADB-method | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13/13 Pro | β Yes. | MIUI 14.0.3+ required |
| Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G | β Yes. | On Chinese firmware (CN) may need to unlock the bootloader |
| POCO F4 GT | β Yes. | It only works when it's off. SIM-map |
| Black Shark 4 Pro | β οΈ Partially. | Can reset the settings of the graphics processor |
β οΈ Note: On devices with a blocked bootloader (bootloader) use ADB For region change, you can lead to soft-brick (the device will only boot in Fastboot mode). Before the procedure, check the bootloader status with the command fastboot oem device-info - Device unlocked: true means that the risks are minimal.
π‘
If, after the change of region, ADB Mobile data is missing, go to Settings β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Access point (APN) You can pick the operator manually. Often the system resets. APN-adjustments when changing the region.
Bypassing restrictions on Chinese firmware (CN β Global)
Devices purchased in China (with CN firmware) are often region-specific, requiring unlocking the bootloader and custom firmware to be used to change it to a global one, a method that is suitable for Xiaomi 12S Ultra, Redmi K50 Gaming and other Chinese models.
Algorithm of action:
- Unlock the bootloader through the official Mi Unlock tool (requires a binding Mi Account and wait 7-15 days).
- Download the global firmware for your model from the Xiaomi Firmware Updater website.
- Install firmware via Fastboot or Recovery (instructions depend on the model).
- After flashing, change region through Settings β Additional settings β Region.
Importantly, this method resets all data and can deprive you of warranties, and some models (for example, Xiaomi MIX Fold 2) after flashing stop working 5G broadband modules for Chinese operators.
What happens if you interrupt the firmware through Fastboot?
Problems after the change of the region and how to solve them
Even if the procedure is successful, you may face unexpected consequences, and here are the most common problems and ways to fix them:
- π Google Pay does not work: Make sure the region of the device matches the region of the bank card.If the problem persists, clear the Settings app data β Annexes β Google Pay β Warehouse β Clear the data.
- πΆ Mobile Internet Missing: Check the Settings APN (See the tip above) or reset your network settings in Settings β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Resetting network settings.
- π Voice commands are gone: Reinstall Google Assistant and update language packs in its settings.
- π Mi Store shows bug: Clear the Mi Store app cache and reboot the device.
If the device overheats or runs out quickly after a region change, check the active background processes in Settings β Battery β Battery Use. Sometimes system applications (such as MiuiDaemon) start consuming more resources due to regional mismatches.
π‘
Before changing region to Xiaomi, always check the modelβs compatibility with the target region. 5G India does not support LTE-European operators, even if the region is changed.
Alternative methods: VPN, Mi accounts and system fraud
If none of the above methods work, you can try to trick the system without changing the region at the firmware level.
- π VPN + Google Play reset: Connect to the VPN the country in question, then in the settings β Annexes β Google Play Store β Storage click Clear Data. The next time you run, the store may suggest you change region.
- π€ Change region in Mi Account: Go to the Mi Account website, change the country in the profile settings and re-connect the device.
- π± Installation of regional applications through APK: Download. APK-Files of the desired programs (for example, Netflix for the USA) from sites like APKPure and install them manually.
These methods donβt change the system region, but they can help you bypass some limitations, like using a VPN to download an app from Google Play that isnβt available in your region, but it may not work without a real location.
β οΈ Attention: Use VPN For deception of geolocation in banking applications (for example, SberPay or Revolut) can lead to the blocking of an account on suspicion of fraud. IP-address, but also sensor data of the device (gyroscope, accelerometer) to determine the real location.
