Xiaomi Mi Box S is one of the most popular Android TV-It's a set-top box, but even with this device, users have problems connecting the remote, most often after resetting, updating the firmware or buying a new remote, and in this article, we'll look at all the current ways of synchronizing: from standard pairing of the original remote to connecting universal IR remotes and control from a smartphone.
It's important to understand that the Mi Box S supports two types of remotes: Bluetooth (original remote) and IR (universal remotes). The synchronization method depends on your remote model and the console firmware version. If you lose your native remote or it breaks, it's no problem: we'll show you how to use your smartphone as a temporary control until you buy a new one.
This article is relevant for all versions of the Mi Box S (including the MDZ-22-AB and MDZ-24-AA models) with firmware based on Android TV 9.0 and later. If your console runs an outdated version of the software, some steps may differ, we will mention this too.
1. Preparation for connection of the remote
Before syncing the remote with the Mi Box S, make sure that the basic conditions are met:
- 🔋 The console is connected to the power and is on (the indicator on the front panel is lit blue or white).
- 📶 If you use a Bluetooth remote, check that Bluetooth is enabled in the settings (Settings) → Devices → Bluetooth).
- 🔄 For IR panels, make sure there are no obstacles between the console and the console (maximum distance is 5 meters).
- 📱 If the original remote doesn’t work, prepare a smartphone with the Mi Remote app installed (available for Android and iOS).
If the console does not respond to any remote control, try to restart it with a long press on the power button (10 seconds). If the indicator does not light up, the problem may be in the power supply or the device itself (see the "Problem Solving" section).
2. Connecting the original Bluetooth remote
The original Xiaomi Mi Box S remote is connected via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).If it stopped working after an upgrade or reset, perform forced synchronization:
- Turn on the power button on the case (if it is turned off).
- Bring the remote to a distance of 10-15 cm to the console.
- Press the Menu buttons simultaneously (⋮) + OK on the remote and hold 5-7 seconds until the indicator on the remote starts to blink.
- Release the buttons – the console should automatically detect the remote and connect it (on the screen will appear a notification).
If the synchronization has not occurred:
- 🔄 Try repeating the procedure by removing and inserting the batteries from the remote control.
- 📱 Connect to the console via Mi Remote and check if Bluetooth is enabled in the settings.
- 🔧 Reset the remote settings: pinch Back (←) + Home for 10 seconds.

Important! After successfully connecting, check all buttons. If some keys don't respond (like Netflix or Prime Video), it may mean that the remote is not original or that a console firmware update is required.
3. Customization of the universal IR remote
If you use a universal IR remote (for example, from a TV or air conditioner), it can be programmed to work with the Mi Box S.
- Find out the manufacturer's code for the Xiaomi Mi Box. Usually it is 1263, 1517 or 0178 (see the exact code in the instructions for the remote).
- Activate the programming mode on the remote (most often, clamping Setup or Set until the indicator flashes).
- Enter the manufacturer’s code using digital buttons.
- Point the remote to the console and press Power – if the indicator on the Mi Box S blinks, the setup was successful.

4. Controlling the Mi Box S from a smartphone
If the remote is lost or broken, you can temporarily control the console via your smartphone.
- Install the Mi Remote app (available for Android and iOS).
- Connect your smartphone and console to a single Wi-Fi network.
- Launch the app and select the Mi Box S from the device list.
- Follow the instructions on the screen for pairing.

If the application does not find the prefix:

5. Solving problems with the remote connection
If the remote is not synchronized, check the following points:
⚠️ If the monitor on the remote does not light up when you press the buttons, the problem is the batteries or the remote itself. Try replacing the batteries with new ones (Duracell or Energizer batteries are recommended).

If none of the methods helped, try resetting the settings of the consoles:
- Go to Settings → Device → Reset settings.
- Select Delete all data (confirmation required).
- After restarting, repeat the procedure for connecting the remote.
⚠️ Attention! Setting reset will delete all installed apps and accounts. Pre-record the login details to Google and other services.
6. Alternative management practices
If standard methods don’t work, consider the following options:
- 🎮 Gaming Controller: Connect Bluetooth gamepad (e.g. Xiaomi Game Controller) via Settings → Devices → Add an accessory.
