Why you need to link a Google account to Xiaomi and what problems it solves
Synchronizing your Google account with your Xiaomi phone (including Redmi, POCO and Black Shark models) gives you access to key Android features: backup of contacts, calendars, photos in Google Photos, as well as automatic installation of apps from Google Play after a reset. Without binding, you will lose the ability to use Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps and other services to the fullest.
However, MIUI users often face unique challenges: the system can block adding an account due to regional restrictions (especially on Chinese firmware), require confirmation via SMS when two-factor authentication is enabled (2FA), or issue an error βI failed to connect to Google servers.β In this article, we will analyze all the current ways of linking an account β from the standard method to bypassing restrictions through ADB and alternative services.
Importantly, the procedure is different for phones with global (Global ROM), Chinese (China ROM) and custom firmware. If your Xiaomi is bought in China or stitched informally, some methods may not work - for such cases, we have prepared separate solutions in the "Error Solving" section.
Preparing your phone before adding a Google account
Before you link your account, follow the mandatory steps to avoid errors:
- πΆ Connect to a stable Wi-Fi or mobile network (3G/4G/5G). Google servers can block authorization via proxy or VPN.
- β³ Update. MIUI to the latest version: go to Settings β The phone. β Update: Chinese firmware may require Google services to be unlocked first.
- π Turn it off. VPN/Proxies and antiviruses (such as Mi Security) that can block connection to Google servers.
- π± Check date and time: Incorrect settings can cause an error "failed to establish a reliable connection." Enable automatic synchronization in Settings β Additionally. β Date and time.
If you have previously tried to add an account and have an error, reset your Google Play Services settings:
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find Google Play Services (or Google Play Services).
- Click Warehouse β Clear the data and Clear the cache.
- Reboot the phone.
Standard method: add an account through MIUI settings
This is the basic method that works on most Xiaomi phones with global or European firmware.
- Open the Settings. β Accounts and synchronization (or Settings) β PapaSSWORD & SECURITY β Accounts on new versions MIUI).
- Click Add Add Account β Google.
- Enter your email address and password. If two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled, confirm your login via SMS or Google Authenticator.
- Accept the terms of use and configure the synchronization parameters (contacts, calendars, backups).
If the error "This device is not certified" appears after entering the data, it means that your Xiaomi has not passed the Google Mobile Services (GMS) validation.
βοΈ What to do when you make an error: Device is not certified"
Critical information: The standard method on Chinese firmware (China ROM) does not work β Google services are removed at the system level, and for such cases, you need to unlock through Mi Unlock or install global firmware.
Alternative ways to add a Google account
If the standard method doesnβt work, try one of these options:
1. Through the browser (to bypass MIUI locks)
- Open the Chrome browser or Mi Browser.
- Go to https://accounts.google.com.
- Log in to your account.
- After successful login, return to Settings β Accounts β the account should appear automatically.
2. via the Gmail app
If Gmail is pre-installed:
- Open the Gmail app.
- Click on the profile icon in the upper right corner β Add another account.
- Choose Google and follow the instructions.
3. via ADB (for power users)
This method is suitable if MIUI blocks the addition of an account at the system level, you will need a computer with ADB-tools installed.
adb shell pm clear com.google.android.gms
adb shell pm clear com.google.android.gsf
adb shell am start -n com.google.android.gsf.login/After completing the commands, restart the phone and try adding the account again.
Why does MIUI block the addition of a Google account?
Solving common errors when linking an account
Letβs look at the typical problems and their solutions:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| βI couldnβt connect to Googleβs servers.β | Blocking MIUI connection, incorrect network settings | Disable VPN, check date/time, reset network settings |
| "Device not certified" | No GMS certificate (often on custom firmware) | Check out the model on Google or run a global MIUI |
| This account has already been added to another device. | Synchronization conflict or Google restriction | Delete your account from other devices via myaccount.google.com |
| "Owner's Confirmation Required" (at 2FA) | Two-factor authentication is enabled, but no SMS/email access is available. | Use backup codes or Google Authenticator app |
If none of the methods worked, check:
- π Version MIUI: on old firmware (below) MIUI 12) may not be available for the required Google components.
- π¦ Google services: Chinese firmware must be installed manually through the Mi App Store (search for Google Installer").
- π bootloader status: Unlocked bootloader can cause certification errors. check status with fastboot oem device-info command.

If you bought Xiaomi in China, check out the model on MIUI Download. It may have an official global firmware that you can install through the Mi Flash Tool.
Features of binding on Chinese firmware (China ROM)
Xiaomi phones with Chinese firmware (China ROM) do not have pre-installed Google services. To add an account, follow the following steps:
1. Installation of Google Installer
- Download Google Installer from the Mi App Store (search for "Google").
- Install the application and launch it.
- Select the service package (Google Play Services + Framework is recommended).
- After installation, restart the phone.
2 Unlocking through Mi Unlock (for advanced users)
If Google Installer is not working, you will need to unlock the bootloader and flash the global version of MIUI:
- Apply for unlocking through the official Xiaomi website.
- Connect your phone to your PC in Fastboot mode (press Power + Vol Down).
- Start the Mi Unlock Tool and follow the instructions.
- Once unlocked, run Global ROM through the Mi Flash Tool.

Unlocking the bootloader resets all the data on the phone! make a backup through Settings β Additional β Backup and Reset.
β οΈ Warning: Unlocking the bootloader will void the warranty on devices purchased from Xiaomiβs official stores in Russia and Europe.
Security: How to Protect Your Linked Account
After successfully linking your account, set up additional security measures:
- π Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) In the Google account settings, use the Google Authenticator app instead of SMS β It's more reliable.
- π± Set up the lock. MIUI: Go to Settings. β Lock screen β Block apps and add Gmail, Google Play and Account Settings to secure apps.
- π Check out active sessions on the page myaccount.google.com/security. Remove unknown devices.
- π‘οΈ Turn off autocomplete passwords for Google account in Settings β Passwords and security β Autocomplete if the phone is used by other people.
If you are selling or transferring a phone, you must:
- Delete your Google account in Settings β Accounts β Google β Delete your account.
- Perform a factory reset (Settings β Additional β Backup and Reset β Resetting).
- Check that the phone is not tied to Mi Account (you can do this at account.xiaomi.com).
β οΈ Note: Xiaomi phones with Mi Account tied may require username/password entry after reset (Mi Cloud Lock protection). If you forget the data, it will be difficult to restore access - you will need to contact Xiaomi with a confirmation of purchase.
