You try to write a message or search query on a Xiaomi smartphone, but the keyboard stubbornly starts every word with a capital letter? Or after the dot, the Capitalize register automatically turns on, preventing you from entering text with lowercase characters? This problem is familiar to many users of Redmi, POCO and Mi-series - especially those who have switched from iOS or other Android devices, where the logic of auto-replacement works differently.
In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to force switching into small letters – from basic gestures to hidden keyboard settings. You will learn how to turn off automatic register correction, use voice input to bypass restrictions, and what unique keyboard chips are available. MIUI 14+ Allows you to control the register with one touch. Instructions are valid for all Xiaomi models (including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Mi 11) and firmware versions from MIUI 12 to HyperOS.
Why does Xiaomi automatically write with a capital letter?
The problem of “eternal capital letters” on Xiaomi is related to the operation of three key mechanisms:
- 🔹 Capitalize autocorrect is a feature that automatically capitalizes the first letter after a dot, exclamation point, or at the beginning of a new sentence. MIUI.
- 🔹 Auto-replacement – corrects “wrong” words, including the register (for example, replaces “hello” with “hello” at the beginning of the message).
- 🔹 Language settings – some languages (e.g. German) require capital letters for all nouns, which can conflict with manual input.
On Xiaomi devices, these features are more aggressive than on pure Android, due to MIUI optimizations. For example, MIUI 13+ has added a smart input algorithm that analyzes context and forcibly adjusts the register even if you manually switched it to lowercase letters. This often knocks users who are used to more “obedient” keyboards on Samsung or Google Pixel.
⚠️ Note: If you use a third-party keyboard (e.g. SwiftKey or Fleksy), autocorrect settings may vary. MIUI Gboard.
Method 1: Manual register switching with the Shift button
The most obvious, but often ignored method is the use of the key. ⇧ Shift. On the Xiaomi keyboard, it works in three modes:
- Single tap – the next letter will become a capital (for example, to write “Hello”).
- Double pressing - includes Caps Lock (all letters will become capital), repeated double pressing turns off the mode.
- Press + shift left/right – in some versions of MIUI, you can select a register for a whole word (relevant to MIUI 14+).
To write a word with a small letter:
- Touch the keys. ⇧ Shift once, it will light up in blue.
- Enter the first letter of the word, it will be lowercase.
- Keep typing the remaining letters. The keyboard will automatically return to the lower case.
If this method doesn’t work, check your autocorrect settings (see Method 3). Also note that on some models (e.g. POCO F4), the Shift key may be delayed due to optimizing power consumption, in which case try pressing it before you type the letter.
💡
On the Gboard keyboard, you can hold the Shift key and swipe left/right along the alphabet row to quickly select the desired register for several characters.
Method 2: Disabling Capitalize autocorrect in settings
If manual switching doesn't work, the problem is with autocorrection settings, so you can turn off automatic register correction.
For the standard MIUI keyboard:
- Open any field to enter text (such as notes or a message).
- Touch the badge. ⚙️ (gear on the keyboard → Choose "Settings».
- Go to Autocorrect → Automatic capital letters.
- Turn off the options: 📌 «After punctuation marks» 📌 «At the beginning of the sentence» 📌 «For their own names (if any)
For Gboard (Google keyboard):
- Start Settings → System → Language and input → Virtual Keyboard → Gboard.
- Select Autocorrect → Automatic capital letters.
- Turn off all switches in this section.
To activate these gestures:
- Open the keyboard settings (⚙️ → «Settings»).
- Go to Gestures or Additional Features (name depends on the version of MIUI).
- Turn on the options: 🔘 «Gangs of space» 🔘 «Smart register switching (if any)
These gestures are especially useful for owners of smartphones with large screens (for example, Xiaomi 13 Ultra or Redmi K60 Pro), where it is inconvenient to reach the Shift key with one hand.
Make sure that gestures are included in the settings|Try swipe up/down the space|Check the keyboard reaction in different applications (SMS, Telegram, Chrome)|If necessary, restart the smartphone.-->
Method 4: Voice input as a workaround
If the keyboard stubbornly ignores your attempts to write small letters, you can use voice input, which is guaranteed to bypass all the limitations of autocorrection, since speech recognition does not depend on the keyboard settings.
How it works:
- Open the field to enter the text.
- Touch the badge. 🎤 (microphone) on the keyboard.
- Dictate the text by clearly saying the words with the right register, such as "write hello with a small letter."
- The system recognizes the command and enters the text in the lower case.
⚠️ Note: If voice input does not recognize register change commands, update the Google app (responsible for speech recognition) in the Play Market. Also check that the language settings are “Russian (Russia)” and not regional variants like “Russian (Ukraine)” – they can ignore the commands on the register.
Method 5: Use of alternative keyboards
If a standard MIUI or Gboard keyboard stubbornly doesn't want to obey, consider installing a third-party keyboard.
| keyboard | Advantages | Deficiencies | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| SwiftKey | Flexible autocorrection settings, gesture support for the register | It takes up a lot of memory, sometimes slows down on weak smartphones | Play Market |
| Fleksy | Minimalist design, fast input, manual register control | Plugins and themes require subscriptions | Play Market |
| AnySoftKeyboard | Open source, full control of autocorrection | Outdated interface, no cloud synchronization | Play Market |
To install an alternative keyboard:
- Download the app from the Play Market.
- Go to Settings → System → Language and input → Virtual keyboard.
- Activate the new keyboard and set it by default.
- In the keyboard settings, turn off register autocorrection (items may be called Auto-capitalization or Capitalize words).
After switching, check the register in different applications. If the problem persists, try resetting the keyboard settings (see Method 7).
💡
Alternative keyboards often offer more options for case setup, but may conflict with MIUI system fonts. Before installing, check for reviews about compatibility with your Xiaomi model.
Method 6: Enter text via clipboard
If all of the above methods didn't work, you can use a workaround, which is to type text through the clipboard, which is guaranteed to bypass autocorrection, because text is inserted "as is."
Instructions:
- Open any text field (such as Notes or Google Docs).
- Enter the text you want with a small letter manually, ignoring the autocorrection prompts (you can use Method 1 or Method 3).
- Select the text and copy it (copy).
- Insert (Insert) text into the target application (message, search bar, etc.).
Advantages of the method:
- ✅ It works even if autocorrect is on and not turned off.
- ✅ Allows you to insert text in several places without re-typing.
Disadvantages:
- ❌ Additional actions (copying/pasting).
- ❌ Not suitable for long dialogues or large volume of text.
For convenience, you can use clipboard managers (for example, Clipboard Manager or Clip Stack), which save the history of copied text, which allows you to quickly insert frequently used phrases with the desired register.
Method 7: Resetting keyboard settings to factory
If none of these methods worked, it's possible that the keyboard settings are damaged by updating MIUI or conflicting with other applications, and factory resets may help.
How to reset your settings:
For the standard MIUI keyboard:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Find the MIUI Keyboard (or MIUI Keyboard) app.
- Open Warehouse → Clear the data and Clear the cache.
- Reboot your smartphone.
For Gboard:
- Open Settings → System → Language and input → Virtual Keyboard → Gboard.
- Select Additional → Reset the settings.
- Confirm the action and restart the keyboard.
After discharge:
- 🔹 Autocorrection settings will return to factory settings (may have to re-disable Capitalize).
- 🔹 The entry history and the words studied will be deleted.
- 🔹 Gestures and additional functions will turn off – they need to be configured again.
⚠️ Note: On some Xiaomi models (e.g, POCO X3 Pro) Keyboard reset may cause language packets to reset. After rebooting, check that the language you want (e.g. Russian) is still available in your input settings.
Method 8: Update the firmware and keyboard
If the registry problem occurred after updating MIUI or installing a new application, a software bug may be the cause.
- 📲 Keyboard update via Play Market (relevant to Gboard).
- 📱 Updating the firmware to the latest version MIUI or hyperos.
- 🔄 Retrace to the previous version of the keyboard (if the bug appeared after the update).
How to update firmware:
- Go to Settings → About the phone → System update.
- Click Check for Updates and install the available packages.
- After the update, restart the device.
If the update didn’t work, check Xiaomi forums (like Mi Community) for known keyboard bugs for your model. For example, MIUI 14.0.4 for Redmi Note 11 had a bug that caused the Shift key to work with a delay – the problem was solved by rolling back MIUI 14.0.3.
