Owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones sooner or later face a situation where the device stops responding to commands or works incorrectly.Reboot is a universal method of solving a variety of software failures, from hanging applications to network problems. Unlike just turning off the screen, the full cycle of on and off the system clears RAM and resets temporary errors.
Many users confuse βoffβ and βresetβ without understanding the difference in processes. Hard Reset buttons do not delete your personal data, photos or contacts, unlike a full reset to factory settings. Understanding this difference is critical to not lose important information. Below we will discuss in detail all available restart methods for current versions of the MIUI and HyperOS shell.
Standard Reboot via the Settings Menu
The safest and most appropriate way to restart your smartphone is to use a regular software menu, which ensures that all active processes are completed correctly and the file system is not damaged. Unlock the device and find the Settings icon on the home screen or in the application menu.
Inside the menu, you scroll down to the bottom, and you'll find About Phone (or Advanced Settings depending on the firmware version) and you'll see a big Reboot button when you click on it, and the system can request confirmation of action or the unlock password if it's installed.
This is preferable in everyday use, as it is fully controlled by the Android operating system. If the phone responds to touch but is slow, this option will help restore normal performance without risk.

Before a scheduled reboot, close all heavy applications so that the process goes faster and without data saving errors.
Use of side control buttons
Physical buttons are the primary tool for interacting with the device when the touch screen is unstable or completely locked. On most modern Xiaomi models, the algorithm of actions depends on the duration of the press. A brief press on the power button usually calls the off menu, where you need to select the Reboot option.
However, in newer versions of the MIUI shell, a short tap often activates the voice assistant Google Assistant or Xiao AI. To get into the power management menu, you need to press the power button for 2-3 seconds. If the screen is out and the Mi or Redmi logo appears, then the process is running successfully.
There's also a key combination to call the menu. Simultaneously pressing the power button and the volume button (or decrease, depending on the model) for a few seconds can also open the Recovery menu or the off menu. Be careful: if you're on a menu with English text and Reboot, Wipe Data buttons, don't panic. Select Reboot and then Reboot to System.

The Forced Reboot (Hard Reboot)
The situation where the interface is completely frozen and the phone is not responding to anything is called a "freeze." In this case, the usual methods do not work, and a hardware reset is required. This process is also called Hard Reboot. It simulates the extraction of the battery, which causes the processor to restart the system from scratch.
To do this, you need to press the power button and hold it continuously for 10 to 20 seconds. The screen can go out and turn on, it's normal to vibrate, you need to release the button only after the manufacturer's logo appears. Some models require the power and volume buttons (up) to be pressed simultaneously.
β οΈ Note: Do not use the forced reboot method constantly. Frequent interruption of the system without regular completion of processes can lead to damage to system files or the appearance of "broken" sectors in memory.
If the phone is stuck and doesn't respond to even prolonged button retention, try plugging it into a charger. Sometimes, feeding current to the power controller can wake the device up, then a standard reboot is possible. It's also worth checking if the battery is not dead to zero, in which case the phone should be held on charge for 15-20 minutes before trying to turn on.
Reboot via computer and ADB
For advanced users who modify their devices or debug, there is a method of rebooting via ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which is useful when the touch screen is broken and the buttons are physically damaged, but the system is partially functioning and recognized by the computer.
First, you need to include USB Debugging in the Developer menu, and if the menu is closed, it won't work, and then you can connect your phone to your PC with a cable, and open the command line or terminal in the ADB tool folder.
adb rebootThis command sends a signal to the system to soft reboot, and if the system doesn't respond, you can try the command to enter recovery mode:
adb reboot recoveryUsing ADB requires a driver base installed on the computer. If the computer can't see the device, check the cable and connection mode (MTP/PTP), which is considered a professional method and is less commonly used by ordinary users.

Automatic reboot on schedule
The MIUI and HyperOS shells have a useful feature that not everyone knows about: automatic reboot on a schedule, ideal for those who want to keep RAM clean without their involvement, and the system will turn off and turn on the phone at a given time, such as at night.
To set up this feature, go to Settings, then select Battery and Performance (or simply Battery). Find Planner on/off or Autostart. Here you can set the time for daily reboot.
- π Set a time when the phone is not being used (e.g. 03:00 a.m).
- π Make sure that the phone is connected to the charger at this time so as not to run out.
- π Turn on Do Not Disturb mode so that notifications donβt wake you up after turning on.
Regular automatic reboot helps avoid the accumulation of system debris and prevents many types of freezes, especially for low-end models with a small amount of RAM, which eventually start to run slower.
Recovery mode and safe mode
If the phone is constantly rebooting itself (cyclic reboot) or freezes immediately after turning on, it may be necessary to enter Recovery Mode. This is a special diagnostic interface that is loaded to the main system. The combination is usually used to enter: the phone is turned off, the power is pinched and the volume up at the same time.
In the Recovery menu, you can navigate with volume buttons and choose from power buttons, and you can choose between Wipe Data or just Reboot. Be careful: Wipe All Data will delete all your files.
There's also Safe Mode, which only downloads system applications, and if the phone is running normally in Safe Mode, it's a problem in one of the apps you've installed, and many models have to press the turn off button on the menu to enter Safe Mode, and some models have to press the volume down button when you turn on.
| Method | When to use | Risk of data loss | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settings menu | Planned reboot, phone working | No. | Low. |
| Power button | The screen is not responding, but the button is working. | No. | Low. |
| Hard Reboot (10-20 seconds) | Full freeze, black screen. | Minimum | Medium |
| ADB team | Screen is broken, PC access is available | No. | Tall. |
| Recovery Mode | System Errors, Cyclical Reboots | High (on discharge) | Tall. |
Frequent problems and their solutions
Sometimes users are faced with a paradoxical situation: the phone writes "Switch off", but the process hangs on the logo or black screen, this can indicate damage to system files or overflow of internal memory, in which case freeing up storage space or updating the firmware helps.
Another common problem is that the phone only turns on when it's connected to charging, which is a classic sign of battery degradation or a power controller malfunction, and if the phone turns off immediately after the cable is fully charged, it's likely that you'll need to replace the battery.
β οΈ Warning: If after a reboot the phone shows the logo and shuts off indefinitely (bootloop), don't try to turn it on constantly. This can finally drain the battery. Try logging into Recovery and resetting settings, saving data beforehand if possible.
In rare cases, the problem lies in the power button, if it physically locks or locks, the phone will behave chaoticly, check if the button is stuck in the case, and gently clean it with a dry toothbrush or compressed air.

If standard methods donβt help and the phone continues to freeze immediately after booting, the problem may be hardware or require the device to be flashed.
