Owning a Xiaomi smartphone often starts with a pleasant surprise at price and specs, but can be overshadowed by the inability to read the menu.Chinese versions of devices popular for their affordability often come with Chinese firmware preinstalled. This creates a barrier that seems insurmountable to the inexperienced user, but is actually solved by a few simple actions.
Changing the interface language is not just a matter of convenience, but also a prerequisite for the full use of all the functions of the gadget. Without the right translation, you risk misconfiguring your security system, getting confused with notifications or accidentally removing important applications. In this article, we will discuss in detail all the ways to translate a phone into your native language.
There are several scenarios that owners face, from simply changing the language on the menu to having to flash the device, depending on which operating system is installed initially and whether there is a menu item you want, and we will look at both standard methods and more complex technical solutions.
Determining the firmware version and its capabilities
Before you start taking action, you need to understand which version of the software you are dealing with. Global versions usually already contain Russian, but Chinese versions may require additional manipulation.
If the build number has the letter "C", this indicates the Chinese version. In such cases, the standard settings menu may not contain Russian. However, modern MIUI shells and the new HyperOS often allow you to add language through built-in tools, even if it is not in the base list at the first run.
Smartphones designed for the domestic market of China, have a full range of Chinese services that can conflict with the usual Google services, the translation of the interface in this case is only the first step to fully adapt the device to our realities.
You should also pay attention to the region you selected when you first set up, and sometimes the menu language depends not only on the firmware, but also on the geolocation settings, and if you choose China as your primary region, the system can only force you to offer Chinese or English interfaces.
Standard language change through system settings
The easiest and safest way is to use the built-in menu, and even if your phone is speaking characters, navigating icons and visuals can find the right partition, so you have to go to the settings that are usually indicated by the gear, and find the section that is responsible for the additional settings.
In the latest versions, the path is often hidden in the depths of the menu, so you need to find a section similar to Settings, then look for a section with a planet icon or the letter "A" (Language & Input). If the menu is in Chinese, focus on the characters for "Language" (often the 5th character in the settings list).
- π Click on the gear icon to enter the settings.
- π Find a section with a planet icon or additional settings.
- π Select the "Language and Input" option).
- β Click "Add language" and select "Russian".
Once you have selected Russian, the system will suggest making it the primary language, and confirm the action, and the interface will change instantly. If Russian is not on the list of available languages, this means that the current firmware does not contain the corresponding language packages, and a deeper intervention will be required.

If you canβt find the menu item you want, use the image translation function in the Google Translate app β point the camera at the screen, and the app will translate the characters in real time.
In some cases, especially on older versions of MIUI, the language may depend on the SIM card. Try inserting a Russian carrier SIM card when you first turn on. The system can automatically identify the region and suggest installing the appropriate language pack when you connect to Wi-Fi.
Use of the MoreLocale 2 application
If the standard menu does not have Russian, MoreLocale 2 will come to the rescue. This time-tested application allows you to activate hidden language packs that are already in the system, but not displayed in the menu.
You need to download to start the work. APK-The application file is from a reliable source, because Google Play may not have one. After installation, run the program. You will see a list of languages and regions. You need to find "Russian" and "Russia" or enter the code manually.
βοΈ Check before using MoreLocale 2
After selecting the language, the app will ask you to allow you to change your settings via USB debugging (ADB). You do not need a computer if you use the "Wireless Debugging" feature in the developer menu, but the easiest way to connect the phone to a PC. However, on newer versions of Android (11, 12, 13, 14), access via ADB may be limited.
β οΈ Note: Using MoreLocale 2 is not a firmware reflash, it is only a forced switch of system variables. After resetting to factory settings or updating the system, the language can return to its original (Chinese or English).
If automatic search didn't work, try to enter the region code manually. In the Custom Locale field, type: ru for language and RU for country. Press Set. The screen should blink and the interface will be translated. If the application gives an error or the language is not applied, then your firmware is physically missing localization files, and only changing the firmware will help.
Region change and language packages
Sometimes the problem is not the lack of language, but the wrong region. Xiaomi shells are highly geo-dependent. Changing the region in settings can unlock certain features and language options. Go to Settings β Additional β Region.
Try to pick neighboring countries, like Kazakhstan, Ukraine, or Belarus, which often share language packs with Russia, and when you change region, the phone may need to reboot, and don't ignore that, because the cache needs to be updated.
| Region | Probability of having a RU | Features |
|---|---|---|
| China | Low. | Lots of Chinese software, no Google Play |
| India | Medium | A lot of advertising, English main |
| Europe (Germany) | Tall. | GDPR, a full set of languages |
| Russia | 100% | The best option for users from Russia |
It's also worth checking for system updates. Sometimes the manufacturer adds language packs in minor security updates. Go to About Phone and click on MIUI/HyperOS. If there's an update available, install it.
Why canβt there be Russian in the global firmware?
Remember that changing region also affects the Mi Home app and other ecosystem services. If youβre using a smart home, make sure that the region you choose matches the region your smart home devices are registered to, or they may become unavailable.
Reflashing the device to the global version
If none of the software methods worked, the radical, but most effective way is to completely reflash, which is to replace the operating system of the device with the official global version (Global Stable), which requires care and the presence of a computer.
First, unlock the bootloader, a mandatory requirement for Xiaomi to protect users, takes between 7 and 168 hours (depending on current Mi Unlock rules), and requires you to link your Mi Account to your phone.
- π Unlock the bootloader through the official utility Mi Unlock.
- πΎ Download a global firmware image for your model from miui.com.
- π» Install the drivers. ADB Mi Flash Tool on PC.
- π Transfer the phone to Fastboot mode (clamping volume down and power).
The firmware process takes 5 to 15 minutes. It's important to use the original. USB-cable USB 2.0 on a computer: interruption of the process or disconnection of the cable will cause the phone to turn into a brick and require repair in the service center.
β οΈ Note: Firmware from China to Global is not possible on all models, and devices labeled "Global Version" (bought in international stores) often have a locked bootloader that does not allow you to install Chinese firmware, but (allow) to install global ones. China Version devices (grey imports) are easier to reflash, but there may be problems with banking applications (NFC), if not_root_rights.

Flashing is the only way to get a fully Russian interface and official security updates if the device was originally Chinese.
Once the firmware is installed successfully, the phone will automatically restart, the first run can last up to 10 minutes, and you'll see a welcome window in your chosen language, and now your device is fully adapted.
Solving font and coding problems
Even after a successful language change, users may encounter artifacts, where instead of letters, they display squares, question marks, or characters in applications, a problem of encoding or missing system fonts, which is often the case in heavily stripped-down versions of software.
To solve this problem, try changing the system font. Go to Themes, go to profile and select Fonts. Set a standard Roboto or MI Sans font. This often forcefully updates character tables.
If the squares are only in specific applications (e.g. messengers), the problem may be on the appβs side: Make sure the correct language is chosen in the appβs settings (if available), or try reinstalling it from the Google Play store rather than from the Chinese GetApps marketplace.
The problem with "squares" in file names
In rare cases, clearing the cache of the Language and Input service helps. Go to Settings β Applications β All applications, find the system input component in the list (you can search by the keyboard icon or English name) and click Clear Cache.
