Buying a Xiaomi smartphone, especially one imported from China or ordered on marketplaces, often becomes a pleasant surprise in terms of price and characteristics, but it confronts the owner with a serious barrier. The device meets you with incomprehensible characters and English inscriptions, which makes the initial setup a real test. The question of how to translate Xiaomi into Russian becomes paramount for comfortable use of the gadget, because without understanding the menu, you can not even easily configure calls or the Internet.
Modern devices of the brand, whether it is the flagship Xiaomi 14 or the budget Redmi Note, are based on the shell of MIUI or the new HyperOS, which initially have the widest localization. However, the presence of Russian in the system depends on the version of the firmware: global, European or Chinese. In the first two cases, Russian is already built-in and you just need to activate it, while the Chinese version requires more complex manipulation or installation of third-party software.
In this article, we will take a look at all possible scenarios for translating the interface, from standard settings to complex cases with Chinese versions. You will learn how to avoid typical mistakes when changing the region, what to do if the desired language is lost after updating, and whether it is worthwhile to sew the device at all for the sake of Russification. Follow the instructions carefully to turn the Chinese into a full-fledged assistant.
Determination of firmware version and region
Before you start taking action, you need to clearly understand what software you are dealing with, depending on the algorithm of your actions and the availability of built-in language packages. Global versions (Global) and European versions (EEA) are created with the expectation of the international market, so Russian is present by default in full, including voice assistants and fonts.
The situation is very different if you have a Chinese firmware (CN) device, which is based on Chinese and English, and you can't find Russian in the settings of this device because you can't activate a physically missing localization file by switching the switch to the switcher, and you can determine the version using the alphabet code in the build number.
Note the marking in the About phone section. If the G is at the end of the version number (e.g. OS1.0.5.0.UNCMIXM), it's the global version. E is the European region, R is Russia and A is India. They all support Russian. If you see the letter C (e.g. OS1.0.3.0.UNCCNXM), you're looking at China, and you'll need additional steps.
⚠️ Note: When buying a smartphone in the Chinese market through intermediaries, it is common to see modified global firmware installed over Chinese, which can lead to blocking of banking applications or notification problems, even if the interface language has already changed to Russian.
To check the current version, go to the settings menu. Even if you don't know the language, the icon is usually a gear. You need to find a section called "About the Phone" in the Russian interface. There, at the top of the screen, you'll see the build number. Remember these characters, they're the key to understanding the capabilities of your device.
Owners of Chinese versions should also pay attention to the presence of GetApps app (similar to Google Play from Xiaomi). If it is present and works correctly, the chances of successful installation of Russian through system updates are high. Otherwise, if the system is fully "sharpened" for China, the only way out is to reflash, which we will talk about in the next sections.
Standard language change in the settings menu
If your device is a global or European version, the process of translating the interface takes literally a few seconds. Xiaomi has a logical menu structure that allows you to navigate even in the absence of text understanding, relying on icons and item layout. The algorithm is the same for all current versions. MIUI HyperOS.
First, you need to get to the main settings menu. On your desktop, look for the gear icon. Once you log in, scroll down to the list until you find the item marked with the three-dot icon or the letter "i" in the circle (usually the last or penultimate item on the list), this is the "About Phone" or "Additional".
Within this section, look for an item with a globe icon or an "A" with a character next to it. This is the Language & Input menu. When you click on it, you'll see a list of available languages. If there's a "Russian" or "Russian" on the list, just select it, and the interface will instantly redesign.
- 🌐 Open the Settings (cog icon) and scroll to the bottom.
- 📍 Select option (three dots or the letter i in a circle).
- 🗣️ Click on Language and Enter (globe icon or letter A).
- 🇷🇺 In the list of languages, find Russian and tap on it.
In some cases, especially on older versions of Android or specific builds, Russian may be hidden in the secondary menu. If you do not find it in the main list, look for a button with a tripod or plus-point in the corner of the language selection screen.
💡
If the date and time are in Chinese after the change of language, check the settings of the region. Select the country "Russia" or "Ukraine / Belarus / Kazakhstan" in the "Region" menu to format the data fully adapted.
The solution to the problem with Chinese firmware (CN Version)
The situation where the list of languages is completely absent Russian and even English (except basic), typical of the "clean" Chinese versions of smartphones, users often try to solve this by installing translation applications from the store, but this is only a half measure that translates only the names of programs, but not the system menu.
There is a method of translation without flashing through the installation of a special APK-The file is unstable, but it depends on the Android version. A more reliable, but difficult way is to unlock the bootloader and install global firmware. However, if you are not ready for such radical measures, find and install the localization file MoreLocale 2.
This method requires you to connect to your computer and use USB debugging. You need to activate the developer mode by quickly clicking on the build number in the About Phone menu (7-10 times). Once activated, a new item will appear in the menu where you need to turn on USB Debugging. Then, through the command line, a command is entered on the PC to grant the application advanced rights.
adb shell pm grant jp.co.c_lis.ccl.morelocale android.permission.CHANGE_CONFIGURATIONAfter executing the command in the MoreLocale 2 application itself, you need to select Custom Locale and enter the codes: Language - ru, Country - RU. This will force the system to display Russian names if they are contained in system files. If there are no localization files in the firmware physically, this method will not work, and you will have to consider the option of flashing through the Mi Flash Tool.
⚠️ Attention: Installing third-party launchers or language change apps on Chinese firmware can lead to unstable system operation, "outages" of the interface and inability to enter the settings menu.
It’s important to understand that Chinese versions often lack the Band 20 connectivity that is important to us, which can degrade the quality of 4G reception in rural areas, so if the translation issue is acute and the device is just bought, it’s sometimes easier and cheaper to sell it and buy a global version than it is to spend hours fighting the software.
Using applications to translate screen
If you don’t want to get into the wilds of system settings or your smartphone model does not allow you to install Russian firmware without losing warranty, modern machine translation technologies come to the rescue. Screen Translate applications are able to overlay Russian text over Chinese or English letters in real time.
The most popular and effective solution is Google Translate, which requires you to activate the "Tap to Translate" function in its settings, and then a floating button will appear on the screen, and when you click on it in any application, including Xiaomi's settings, the system will take a screenshot and translate visible text.
- 📲 Download Google Translate from Play Market or GetApps.
- ⚙️ In the application settings, enable the Translation function from the screen.
- 👆 Give the necessary permissions to access the screen and display over other windows.
- 👁️ Use a floating button to instantly translate the menu.
Another powerful tool is Hi Translate or Bubble Screen Translate, which works on a similar principle, but often offers more flexible settings, such as automatic language recognition or translation in games, and creates a magnifying glass on the screen that you can instantly translate through the text.
However, this method has its drawbacks: machine translation can distort the meaning of technical terms, and overlays sometimes overlap important interface buttons, and applications such as these consume additional battery power and can slow down the device on weak processors.
Why doesn’t the translator translate some menu items?
Setting up the keyboard and entering text
Once the interface is translated, the next critical step is to adjust the keyboard. Without the Russian layout, it is almost impossible to use a smartphone. Xiaomi’s standard keyboard (Sogou or Baidu in Chinese versions) may not have the usual Russian layout or have an uncomfortable letter layout.
It is recommended to install a proven keyboard immediately, for example, Google's Gboard or Yandex.Keyboard. They have excellent adaptation to Russian, smart word prediction and convenient voice input. After installing the keyboard application, it must be activated in the system.
To do this, go to the settings, find the “Additional Settings” section (usually a three-point icon), then “Language and input.” Under “Current Keyboard” or “Keyboard Management”, turn on the switch opposite the installed application and select it as the default input method.
| Parameter | Gboard | Yandex.Keyboard | Standard Xiaomi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support for Russian | Complete. | Complete. | Depends on the region. |
| Voice input | High precision | Great for Russia. | Medium |
| Theme of the design | Rich choice | Good choice. | Limited. |
| Built-in translation | There is. | There is. | No. |
Don't forget to check your autocorrect and text prediction settings, too. It's important for the Russian language that the keyboard "understands" cases and endings. In Gboard, this is set up in the Settings -> Languages section, where you can add Russian and download an offline package to work without the Internet.

Frequent problems and their solution
Users often face unexpected difficulties in localization, and one of the most common problems is when Russian is “flying off” or replaced with English after a system update, often when installing firmware betas or changing the region in settings.
If the language is missing, try clearing the Settings and Google Play Services cache. Go to Settings → Apps → All apps, find the right services, and click Clear Cache. Don't confuse it with Clear All Data, or reset the system settings.
Another problem is font displaying incorrectly, where instead of letters, "squares" or question marks appear, which indicates damage to the system font file, in which case resetting to factory settings (Hard Reset), but first be sure to save all contacts and photos to the cloud.
⚠️ Note: If the date, currency and time format remain Chinese after the change of language, it is not a translation error. You need to change the region in the settings separately. → Additional settings → Region and select your country.
Users also complain that the Google Assistant voice assistant does not understand Russian, while continuing to answer in English, which is solved in the settings of the Google app itself: go to the assistant profile, select Languages, and drag Russian to the first position of the priority list.
💡
Most language problems on Xiaomi are solved by simply cleaning the cache of system applications or re-installing the language pack without requiring a complete reset of the device.
