Changing your smartphone is always stressful, with the fear of losing important contacts, photos or messaging messages, especially when switching between devices in different ecosystems, such as Samsung to the new Xiaomi Redmi 10. Users often mistakenly believe that this process is complex and requires the intervention of service center specialists, but modern technology allows you to do it yourself in 15-20 minutes.
In this article, we will take a look at all the migration options available, from using the Mi Mover app to Googleβs cloud services, how to save folder structure, migrate Wi-Fi settings, and even the location of icons on your desktop, and take your time and follow the algorithm carefully to avoid data loss.
Before you start, make sure that both devices are at least 60 percent charged, the transmission process can be energy intensive, and suddenly turning off one of the gadgets will interrupt the synchronization, and also check for free space on the target device: the memory capacity of the Redmi 10 should exceed the data volume on the old phone.
Preparing devices for data migration
The first step to a successful transfer is to properly prepare both smartphones. On a Samsung device, you need to clear the cache of junk files, which will only take up extra space and time during transfer. Go to Settings β Device Maintenance β Memory and clean up.
On the receiving device Redmi 10, when you first turn on, the system will suggest that you reconfigure the phone. If you have already set it up as new, it is better to reset to factory settings through the menu Advanced Settings. β Reset to avoid application version conflicts and file duplication, which ensures the integrity of the file system structure.
βοΈ Preparation for transfer
An important point is to update the operating system. Make sure both devices have the latest available updates. Older versions of Android or One UI and MIUI shells may contain bugs that interfere with the correct operation of synchronization tools. Check the updates in the About Phone β MIUI version (or similar for Samsung).
β οΈ Warning: Don't try to transfer data over a Bluetooth connection for large amounts of information. This method is outdated, extremely slow and often interrupted on files larger than 1 GB.
Using the Mi Mover app for fast transfer
The most efficient and quickest way to transfer is to use the Mi Mover utility, which is pre-installed on all Xiaomi smartphones and is available for download on Google Play for devices from other manufacturers, including Samsung. The application creates a direct Wi-Fi connection between gadgets, ensuring high transfer speeds without the consumption of mobile traffic.
Run the app on both devices. On Redmi 10, select Recipient and on Samsung, Sender. QR-code or connect to the access point you created. Once paired, you'll see a list of data categories available for migration.
π‘
If Mi Mover doesnβt see the device, temporarily turn off mobile internet (4G/5G) on both smartphones, leaving only the Wi-Fi module on for local communication.
Select the items you need: contacts, messages, calls, apps, images, videos, music and documents. Note that Samsung system applications (Samsung Notes calendar, voice recorder) may not be ported or transferred in an unreadable format.
- π± Select the type of data: contacts, messages, call log.
- πΈ Media files: photo, video, audio and documents.
- π² Annexes: list of installed programmes (APK-file).
- βοΈ Settings: Wi-Fi access points, alarm clocks, notes.
Once selected, click the "Send" button, which can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour depending on the amount of data, the screens of the devices must be on and the gadgets must be in close proximity to each other, and interruption of the process during the copying phase can damage the data archive.
Sync through Google Account and Cloud
An alternative and often more reliable method for users deeply integrated into Google's ecosystem is that if your Samsung has been synced, most of the data is already in the cloud. When you sign in to the same Redmi 10 account, the information will be automatically pulled in.
To check, go to Settings β Accounts and Archiving β Account Management β Google. Make sure the check boxes are ticked against Contacts, Calendar, Notes (if itβs Google Keep) and Photos. Click the Sync button right now to make sure the backup is up to date.
| Type of data | Synchronization method | Transfer nuances |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts | Google Contacts | Instantly, no losses. |
| Photo/Video | Google Photo | It requires a good internet. |
| Annexes | Google Play | Download again, the data inside may not be saved |
| Wi-Fi passwords | Google Account | Automatically when logging into your account |
Once you activate Redmi 10 and enter your Google account password, the system will prompt you to restore your data from your backup. Choose the latest version, which is ideal for restoring your contacts and calendar structure, but it doesn't always correctly transfer media files unless they were uploaded to the cloud in advance.
Transferring Multimedia through Computer
If you have hundreds of gigabytes of photos and videos, wireless methods can be too long, and then you can use your computer as an intermediary. USB-cable and select file transfer mode MTP notice.
Copy DCIM (camera photos and videos), Pictures (screenshots and images from apps), Download and Music folders into a separate folder on your computerβs hard drive. Donβt copy Android or data system folders, as moving them directly can disrupt the applications on the new device.
Then connect Xiaomi Redmi 10 to your computer. Open the phone's internal memory and move the copied folders to the root or the corresponding directories. The folder structure on MIUI is similar to standard Android, so the photos are automatically determined by the gallery.
β οΈ Note: When copying via PC, do not remove the cable until the operation is complete. Damage to the file system when communication is interrupted may require formatting the memory card or internal memory of the phone.
Features of the transfer of messages and messengers
The hardest part of migration is the history of messaging.Standard Android tools often can't move chats from WhatsApp, Telegram or Viber between different brands without losing history. WhatsApp needs to use a built-in backup feature.
On Samsung, open WhatsApp, go to Settings β Chats β Chat Backup. Make sure the copy is created on Google Drive. On Redmi 10, install WhatsApp, log in to your account, and select a recovery from Google Drive backup when requested.
What if WhatsApp doesnβt see a backup?
For Viber, the procedure is similar: back up your old device through the app settings, then restore it to a new one. Note that some secure chats or secret folders may not be recoverable for security reasons.
- π¬ WhatsApp: Backup on Google Drive.
- π Viber: Creating a local or cloud copy.
- βοΈ Telegram: Stores history on the server, you only need to log in to the account.
- π¬ SMS: Only transferable via Mi Mover or specialized utilities.
Completion of the setup and integrity check
After all the transfer procedures are completed, you should carefully check the result. Go through the contact book, make sure that the numbers are not duplicated (which often happens when using multiple synchronization methods at the same time).
Pay special attention to banking applications and two-factor authentication. Apps like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator require separate token transfers through the export/import function within the apps themselves, otherwise you may lose access to accounts.
π‘
A full migration cycle is considered complete only after successfully logging into all mission-critical applications and confirming the operation of two-factor authentication.
If you have used Mi Mover, delete the temporary files created by the application to free up space. It is also recommended to reboot Redmi 10 so that the system correctly indexes new files and the media library is updated.
