Why the flash is triggered by calls and notifications
The flash of a camera flashing when an incoming call or SMS is a standard MIUI feature designed to capture the userβs attention, originally designed for people with hearing impairments or for situations where the phone is in silent mode, but many owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO find this option annoying, especially at night or in public places.
Technically, the mechanism works like this: the system activates the flash LED through the camera driver, even if the screen is turned off. New models (for example, Xiaomi 13 or Redmi Note 12) use not only the main flash, but also the backlight of the screen with the effect of "breathing".
The manufacturer doesn't always make this option obvious. Depending on the version of MIUI (12, 13, 14 or 15) and the model of the smartphone, the path to the settings may differ. For example, on the POCO F5, the option is hidden in the special features menu, and on the Xiaomi 12T Pro, in the notification section. Next, we will analyze all the current ways to disconnect, including hidden ones.
Method 1: Standard shutdown via MIUI settings
The easiest method is to use built-in system options. It works on most devices with MIUI 12 and later, but may not be available on budget models like the Redmi A1 or POCO C50.
- Open the "Settings" (the gear icon on the home screen).
- Go to the Notifications and Status bar section.
- Select Call Notifications (or Inbound Calls on some firmware).
- Scroll down to Light Indication or Flash on Call.
- Move the slider to the off position.
If there is no such item, try an alternative path:
- π Settings β Special facilities β Rumor β Notification flash
- π Settings β Additionally. β Functions for convenience β Flash on notifications
βοΈ Pre-switch check
On some firmware (e.g. MIUI 14 Global), the option may be called Flash notifications β look for it in the English menu localization. If the slider is gray and inactive, then the function is locked at the firmware level (relevant to Chinese versions of MIUI).
β οΈ Note: On Android One devices (e.g. Xiaomi Mi) A3) The path to settings is different: Settings β System system β Gestures β Notification flash. You can also adjust the color and frequency of the flashing.
Method 2: Disconnecting through the special features menu
If the standard method didnβt work, try deactivating the feature in the Disability section, which is universal for all MIUI versions, including MIUI 15 on Xiaomi 14:
- Go to Settings. β Special facilities.
- Choose Hearing (or Audio/Visual Tips).
- Find the option Flash notifications (can be called Flash alerts).
- Turn off the slider and uncheck the checkmarks from the points: π Incoming challenges π¬ Communications β οΈ Other notices
On some devices (e.g. POCO X5 Pro), you can also adjust flash color (white/yellow) and intensity (weak/strong). If you don't have an option, your model doesn't support hardware LED control through this menu.
What to do if the option is grey?
Once you shut down, restart the device to help you apply changes at the core level, so if the flash continues to fire, move on to the next method.
Method 3: Using hidden settings (code ##)
For power users, there is a way to turn off the flash through an engineering menu, which works on most Xiaomi devices, but requires caution β making incorrect changes can lead to crashes.
Enter the following code in the "Phone" appendix:
##36446337##Then the CIT (Customer Engineer Mode) menu will open.
- Go to the Hardware Testing section.
- Select Flash Light (or Torch).
- Find the Notification Flash option and turn it off.
- Save the changes and restart the phone.
If the code doesnβt work, try alternatives:
- π’ ##4636## (opens the test menu where you can find flash settings)
- π’ ##232338## (checking) MAC-addresses, but sometimes contains notification options)
β οΈ Attention: Changes in the engineering menu can affect the performance of sensors or cameras. AMOLED-screens (Xiaomi 13 Ultra, POCO F4 GT) Incorrect settings can cause artifacts to light up. If you're not sure, don't change other settings!
Method 4: Disconnect via ADB (for advanced users)
If the software methods didnβt work, you can block the function at the system level using Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which requires a computer and enabled debugging over USB.
Steps:
- Activate Developer Mode (7 times click on the MIUI version in About Phone).
- Enable USB debugging in Settings β Additional β For developers.
- Connect your phone to your PC and execute the command in the terminal: adb shell settings put global. notification_light_pulse 0
- To completely disable the flash, use: adb shell settings put global flash_notification_enabled 0
To make the changes effective, restart the device. To check the current state of the parameters, use:
adb shell settings get global notification_light_pulse
adb shell settings get global flash_notification_enabledIf the values return 0, the function is disabled, and this method works even on blocked firmware, but requires re-execution after resetting the settings.
π‘
Before using ADB, back up your data via Mi Cloud or locally. In rare cases, incorrect commands can cause a system to crash.
Method 5: Third-party applications for flash control
If the built-in techniques didn't work, you can use apps from Google Play, which intercept notifications and block flash activation.
| Annex | Functional | Support for MIUI | Root is required. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flash Notifications | Flexible flash setting for notifications | Yes (including MIUI 15) | No. |
| Light Manager | Disabling lighting effects for individual applications | Yes (may require ADB) | No. |
| MacroDroid | Automation of the flash off by triggers | Yeah (sets up for MIUI) | No. |
| Tasker | Advanced Notification Management Scenarios | Yes (requires settings) | No. |
For use:
- Install an app from the Play Market.
- Grant permissions to access notifications (Settings β Applications β Special Access β Access to Notifications).
- In the app settings, turn off the Flash on call or Notification light option.
The downside of this method is the additional battery consumption (the applications work in the background), and after the MIUI update, you may need to reconfigure.
Frequent problems and their solutions
Even after the shutdown, the flash can still go off, and let's look at the typical causes and ways to fix them:
- π Flash flashes after update MIUI: Reset notification settings in Settings β Annexes β Application management β Three points. β Reset the settings.
- π± Feature missing from menu: Check firmware region.Chinese versions (CN ROM) Often deprived of this option - reflashing is required Global/EU.
- π Flash works at low charge: This is a separate option in Settings β Battery β Low charge warning.
- π΅ Call melodies conflict: Set a standard call signal β some custom tunes will force the flash to activate.
If the problem persists, check:
- Are there any Magisk modules that modify the operation of the camera (for example, Camera2API) installed?
- Is not activated mode "Do not disturb" with exceptions for calls - it can reset the notification settings.
- Is the second not used? SIM-map β on some models, flash settings are tied to a specific slot.

On devices with MIUI 14+ and HyperOS (e.g. Xiaomi 14), the path to flash settings may be different. Use a search by settings (the magnifier icon at the top) with a request for flash or flash.
