Why Dark Mode May Get In The Way, and When to Turn It Off
The dark subject in MIUI Xiaomi Redmi 8 has become the standard for many users β it reduces the load on the eyes in the evening and saves battery power on the device. AMOLED-But not everyone likes it: some people prefer the classic light interface, some people see dark colors as gloomy, and some people have problems with the display bugs in the apps. For example, in Google Chrome or WhatsApp, text can merge with the background if developers have not optimized the software for Dark Mode.
Another common problem is that it automatically switches the theme on a schedule that confuses users. The smartphone decides when to turn on dark mode, focusing on the time of day or light level. If you didn't know about this feature, it might seem like the phone "breaks on its own." Fortunately, the Redmi 8 allows you to flexibly adjust or completely disable a dark theme - the main thing is to know where to look for the right options.
In this article, weβll look at all the current ways to turn off dark mode, including hidden MIUI settings that donβt lie on the surface, and why the theme can turn on on itself once the system is updated, and how to avoid it.
Method 1: Disconnecting through the basic MIUI settings
The most obvious and quickest method is to use a standard theme menu, which is suitable if you want to completely remove dark mode in all applications and system windows.
- Open βSettingsβ (the gear icon on the desktop or in the application menu).
- Go to the Screen section. β Topics.
- Slip on Dark Mode (or Dark Theme depending on MIUI version).
- Move the slider to the off position. or select the option Light.
If the interface has not changed after this, check if you have a third-party theme installed from the MIUI Dark Store, which can override system settings to reset the theme:
Remove all downloaded themes in Settings β Themes β My themes
Choose a standard MIUI Default theme
Reboot your smartphone to apply changes
-->
β οΈ Note: Some Redmi 8 firmware (especially custom) may have a dark mode in a different place, such as Settings. β Additionally. β If you don't find an option, search by settings (the magnifier icon in the upper right corner).
Method 2: Turning off automatic time switching
If dark mode turns on on itself in the evening, the automatic schedule is to blame, this feature is tied to sunset or a fixed time (for example, from 22:00 to 7:00).
- Go to Settings β Screen β Dark Mode.
- Slip on the schedule (or Automatic turn on).
- Choose No or Off.
- If necessary, turn off the option Adaptive backlighting (it adjusts the brightness by lighting).
On some versions of MIUI, the schedule is hidden behind the option in the dark mode menu. If the option is gray and inactive, then you have the dark mode turned off (see Method 1).
Constantly.
Only at night.
Shut down completely.
Depends on the app.
-->
| Parameter | Option 1 | Option 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-switching | Scheduled (included) | No (unplugged) |
| Adaptive brightness | On (adjusts the backlight) | Disconnected (fixed brightness) |
| Dark theme in the apps | It should be system settings | Forcedly light. |
Method 3: Forced shutdown for individual applications
Some apps (like YouTube or Telegram) ignore the system settings and use their own dark theme to turn it off only for them:
- Open the application you want.
- Go to its settings (usually through the profile icon or three dots in the corner).
- Find the Appearance, Theme or Design section.
- Choose a Light Theme or Use System Settings.
Google apps (Chrome, Gmail, Drive) may require:
- π Log into a Google account β Account management β Data and personalization.
- π± Find the Dark Theme Settings section and disable it.
- π Restart the application to make the changes effective.
β οΈ Attention: B MIUI 12.5+ There's a Global Dark Theme feature that forces darkening even apps that don't support dark mode. If some programs still remain dark after turning off the dark theme, check this setting in Settings. β Special facilities β Color and movement β Global dark theme.

If the app doesnβt respond to theme changes, try clearing its cache in Settings β Apps β [App Name] β Memory β Clear the cache.
Method 4: Reset themes via MIUI Themes (for power users)
If standard methods don't work, the problem may be the system themes fail, and resetting them through the built-in MIUI Themes app will help.
- Open the Themes app (brush icon on your desktop).
- Go to the Profile tab (the human icon in the lower right corner).
- Slip on the settings (cog in the upper corner).
- Choose Reset theme settings or Restore the standard settings.
- Confirm the action and restart the smartphone.
This method resets all visual settings, including wallpaper, icons and fonts. If you use custom firmware, be careful: on some builds, resetting themes can cause the theme app to lose data. We recommend you pre-back up through Settings β Additional β Backup and Reset.
What if the resetting of themes did not help?
Method 5: Disconnect via ADB (for advanced users)
If all of the above methods fail, the last option is to turn off dark mode via ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which will require connecting your smartphone to your computer and executing commands.
- Turn on Developer Mode on Redmi 8: Go to Settings β About Phone. Tap 7 times on MIUI until you become a developer!
Settings β Additional β For Developers
USB debugging
ADB-driver
adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 1(where 1 is a light theme, 2 is a dark theme, and 0 is an automatic switching).
Reset the device.
β οΈ Attention: Misuse of the right ADB If you're not sure what you're doing, you should look at other ways. MIUI settings modified through ADB, may throw off.

ADB-The teams allow you to turn off dark mode even on custom firmware, where standard settings are not available.
What to do if the dark mode turns on on itself after the update
Many Redmi 8 users are experiencing the dark mode activation again after the MIUI update, which is because the system resets some settings to default values to prevent this from happening:
- π± Before updating, back up the settings through Settings β Additionally. β Backup and reset.
- π After the update, do not restore the settings from the backup β it is better to configure the theme manually.
- π οΈ If the problem is repeated, turn off automatic updates. MIUI In Settings β The phone. β Updating the system β Settings (βοΈ) β Auto-update.
Another possible reason is a conflict of themes: If you have installed custom themes from third-party sources, they can override system settings, in which case a complete reset of themes (see Method 4) or flashing the device through Fastboot will help.
