Many users prefer to use the dark interface theme to reduce eye strain in low light conditions. However, on Xiaomi Redmi 10 smartphones with a MIUI shell or HyperOS, there are sometimes situations when the black background becomes irrelevant or just annoys with its appearance in bright daylight.
Returning to classic light design is not only a matter of aesthetics, but also a way to improve readability in the sun. Standard system tuning may not be obvious, as several different parameters, including color scheme and reading mode, are responsible for the appearance.
In this article, we will take a look at all the possible ways to switch colors, learn how to manage system themes, customize individual applications, and eliminate intrusive automatic switching that often confuse users.
The basics of the color scheme in MIUI
The MIUI interface installed on Redmi 10 uses a global setup that forcibly changes the background of all supported applications. This works through a system framework that sends a signal to programs to invert colors or use alternative palettes.
It's worth noting that not all interface elements follow this rule in the same way. Some system menus can stay light if the developer hasn't put in the appropriate support, although this is increasingly rare on modern versions of Android. Understanding this logic will help you avoid confusion when in some places the background is black and in others it is white.
The key element here is the Device Theme, which dictates the basic rules for icons, fonts and backgrounds, and if you use a third-party theme downloaded from the store, it may have its own limitations or forced settings that ignore system switches.
β οΈ Note: Using modified themes from unverified sources may cause the standard dark theme switch to stop working correctly or cause visual glitches in the interface.
For most users, the basic functionality of the system is enough to control the appearance, but deep customization sometimes requires intervention in additional parameters, which we will discuss below.
Disconnection through the main system settings
The easiest and most reliable way to get back a bright background is to use a regular settings menu, which doesn't require superuser rights or additional software, but it takes a few seconds to do everything and applies to the entire system immediately.
You need to get to the main settings menu first. Usually, the gear icon is located on the desktop or in the notification curtain. Find a section called the Screen or Display. Depending on the firmware version and region, this item may be in a different place, but most often it is placed at the top of the list.
Inside the display menu, you'll see the Topic or Color Scheme, and if you click on it, you'll get a choice between "Light" and "Dark" and select "Light" to immediately turn off the black background in all system menus.
βοΈ Checking the display settings
If you didn't find this item in the Screen section, try looking for it in the Wallpaper and Personalization category. In newer versions of HyperOS, the logic of settings grouping may have changed, and the theme management moved closer to customizing wallpaper and fonts.
You should also pay attention to Auto mode. If it's activated, the phone will switch between modes depending on the time of day. This is convenient, but it can interfere if you want to force the light mode at night. Turn off the Scheduled Toggle to lock the selected option.
Control through Control Center and curtain
To quickly access the design settings, Xiaomi engineers have implemented a handy widget into the notification curtain, allowing you to change the color scheme without diving into the depths of the menu, which saves time and is especially useful if you are in a bright environment and the screen is not readable.
To use this method, swipe from top to bottom from the top right corner of the screen (or from the left, depending on the control settings), you will see a panel with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and flashlight buttons, among which should be a button with a crescent or sun image, signed as the Theme.
Clicking this button cyclically switches modes: Light β Dark β Auto. If the buttons are not on the first screen of the widgets, try to push the curtain or press the edit button (usually three dots or a pencil icon) to add the desired switch to a prominent place.
β οΈ Note: If the theme switch button is missing from the curtain even after editing, it is possible that your current theme doesn't support this widget".
Sometimes users accidentally activate In-pocket mode or other saving features that darken the screen. Make sure the curtain doesn't activate Energy Saving mode, which can also make the interface look dimmer and darker, mimicking a dark theme.

To quickly find the desired button in the curtain, hold your finger on any free place of the notification curtain - an editing menu will open, where you can drag the theme switch to the first screen.
Scheduling and automation
Auto-switching is a feature that allows the smartphone to decide when to turn on the dark background, which is convenient for those who do not want to manually change the settings every evening and every morning, but the incorrect operation of this feature often leads to users not being able to understand why the theme turned on itself.
Settings β Screen β Theme is often available under Schedule. You can set time slots here. For example, from 20:00 to 07:00, a dark theme is turned on, and the rest of the time it is light. If you want to turn off dark mode permanently, make sure that this switch is in the off position.
There's also a sunrise and sunset reference, and the smartphone uses geolocation to determine when the theme changes, which is a smarter approach, but it requires constant access to location, which can have a small impact on battery consumption.
Letβs look at the main parameters of automation in the table below:
| Parameter | Description of action | Impact on the battery |
|---|---|---|
| Included. | The topic switches automatically | Minimum |
| Timely. | Shift by specified hours (for example, 21:00 - 06:00) | Absent. |
| Sunset/Sunrise | Change in astronomical time | Average (GPS) |
| Off. | Manual control of the user | Absent. |
If the automation isnβt working properly, try resetting the time and date settings in the Additional β Date and Time menu by selecting βTime Autoset.β This often solves the problems with desynchronizing theme schedules.

Turning off automatic switching on a schedule is the only way to ensure that a dark theme doesnβt turn on itself at the wrong time.
Reading mode and filtering blue light
Often users confuse a dark theme with a read mode or a blue light filter, which visually makes the screen appear yellower or dimmer, which can be mistaken for the dark theme turned on, although technically they are different processes.
Reading mode is designed to be comfortable to view text, can be applied to the entire screen or only to selected applications. To check its status, go to Settings β Screen β Read Mode. If it is active, turn it off or set exceptions.
The Eye Comfort filter makes the colors warmer by removing the cold blue glow. It doesn't change the background to black, but it changes the perception of the picture. It's usually in the same setting on the screen menu. Make sure the intensity slider isn't twisted to the maximum if you want natural color reproduction.
Some versions of MIUI have an ultra-reader feature that turns the entire interface into a black-and-white, high-contrast view, which is an extreme measure for saving charge and protecting the eyes, but it completely changes the look of the system. It turns off in the same read-mode menu.
β οΈ Note: Reading mode may conflict with brightness settings. If the screen still seems strange after turning off the dark theme, check if Ultra or Paper mode is activated in the display settings.
Individual applications, such as browsers or readers, may have their own night-mode settings that override the system settings. Go to the settings of a particular application if the problem is only there.
Solving problems with individual applications
It happens that the system theme is set light, but in a particular application (for example, WhatsApp, Telegram or YouTube), the background remains black. This is because many modern applications have their own theme settings, independent of the system.
On Telegram, for example, you need to go to Settings β Chats β Theme and select βDaytimeβ. On WhatsApp, the path will be Settings β Chats β Theme. On YouTube, the settings are in the user profile under βLookβ.
If the application doesnβt have its own setup but is persistently using a dark background, try clearing its cache. Sometimes old configuration data can cause display conflicts. You can do this in Settings β Applications β All Apps β [App needed] β Clear.
What to do if the application is not listened to?
Itβs also worth checking for updates to the app itself: In older versions of software, the algorithms for determining the system theme may not work correctly, and updating through Google Play or GetApps often solves such bugs.
Reset theme settings to factory
If none of the above has worked, and Redmi 10βs interface continues to behave strangely, the current theme configuration files may have been corrupted.
Go to the Themes app (an icon with a brush or the name "Themes"). Click on the profile avatar in the lower right corner, then select My Themes. Find a theme called "Classic," "Limitless," or "Default," and click "Apply."
This action will return all fonts, wallpaper, icons and color schemes to the "out of the box" state. After applying a standard theme, recheck the screen settings - most likely, the ability to switch will work correctly.
As a last resort, if the problem is systemic and interferes with work, you can reset all your phone settings. This action will delete all your data, so be sure to back up before starting the procedure. Reset is done through Settings β About Phone β Reset β Erase all data.
