Why TalkBack is turned on by itself and how to fix it
TalkBack on Xiaomi Redmi 9C is a useful feature for people with vision problems, but for most users, accidentally activating it becomes a real headache. The phone begins to voice every touch, gestures stop working in the usual way, and the MIUI interface turns into a maze of double taps and swipes. In 80% of cases, the function is turned on due to the accidental clamping of the volume buttons or a combination of keys in the pocket.
The Redmi 9C (M2006C3MG/M2006C3MI) is not disabled by the manufacturer in the main settings menu, but has to be searched for through special features. Moreover, after upgrading to MIUI 12.5+, the path to settings has changed, which confuses even experienced users. In this article, we will discuss three official ways to disable TalkBack without losing data, and also explain how to block its accidental activation in the future.
Before you get to the instructions, make sure that the problem is TalkBack: if the phone makes sounds when you touch but doesn't voice the action, it may be another accessibility service (like Sound Notifications or Live Transcribe) that to check this out, try double-tapping the screen: if it triggers one tap, you're sure to have TalkBack.
Method 1: Disconnection through special features settings
The most reliable method is to deactivate the feature in the Special Options menu, but because of TalkBack's features, the standard settings path doesn't work: you'll have to use gestures to navigate.
- Unlock your phone. If the screen is locked, swipe your two fingers across the display from top to bottom (this will replace the swipe to unlock).
- On the home screen, double-touch and hold (press twice and don't let go of your finger after the second touch) on the Settings icon, wait for the vibration or the beep.
- In the settings menu, scroll through the list with two fingers (up/down swipe wonโt work with one finger!).
- Inside, tap twice on TalkBack (or Screencaster in some versions of MIUI).
- Transfer the slider to the "Off" position with a double touch. Confirm the action in the dialog window (also with a double tap on OK).
If the phone still behaves unusually after shutting down (for example, it requires double taps), restart the device: press the power button and select Reboot (double tap).

Method 2: Use of button combinations (emergency shutdown)
If TalkBack is turned on and the touch screen is not responsive to gestures (for example, due to a failure), you can use a hardware combination. This method works on all Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 11 and newer, including the Redmi 9C:
- Press the power button and the volume button for 3-5 seconds at the same time.
- Hold them until vibration or sound occurs (usually around 5 seconds).
- After the signal release the buttons โ TalkBack must turn off automatically.
This method doesn't always work, because it depends on the firmware version. If the combination doesn't work, try the alternative:
1. Press the power button before the turn off menu appears.
2 Without releasing the power button, double-click on "Cancel" (or "Cancel").
3. Hold your finger on the screen until vibration.โ ๏ธ Note: On some versions MIUI 12.5 for Redmi 9C TalkBack hardware shutdown may cause navigation gestures to reset. After the procedure, check the settings in the System section โ Gestures โ Navigation panel.
Method 3: Resetting special features settings (if nothing helps)
If TalkBack is re-enabled after you turn off or blocks access to your settings, you'll have to do a partial reset, which will only remove the availability settings without affecting your personal data (photos, contacts, messages).
- Open the settings (double tap as described above).
- Go to About Phone โ Backup and Reset.
- Select Resetting Special Options (in some versions of MIUI, the item is called Resetting Availability Settings).
- Confirm the action by entering a password or pattern lock.
Once reset, all TalkBack parameters, including voice prompts and gestures, will return to factory-based settings. If the problem was a configuration failure, this method will solve it 100%.
- ๐ You will have to reconfigure font size, contrast and other accessibility parameters.
- ๐ฑ If TalkBack was turned on due to a damaged cache, after reset, it is recommended to clear the Settings app cache through Settings. โ Annexes โ Application management โ Settings โ Warehouse โ Clear the cache.

Alternative solutions: Disconnect via ADB or Safe Mode
If standard methods donโt work, there are two radical ways to do this: use ADB (Android Debug Bridge) or Safe Mode, which will be suitable for advanced users.
Method 1: Disconnection through ADB
This will require a computer with Xiaomi drivers installed and USB debugging enabled on the phone.
- Get Redmi on board. 9C PC-only USB-cable.
- Open the command prompt (Windows) or terminal (macOS/Linux) and type: adb devices Make sure the device is defined.
- TalkBack: Adb shell settings put secure enabled_accessibility_services com.google.android.marvin.talkback/.TalkBackService:0
- Reboot your phone: adb reboot
Method 2: Safe regime
If TalkBack prevents you from even entering your settings, download your phone to Safe Mode:
- Turn off the device.
- Press the power button before the Redmi logo appears, then release and immediately press the volume down button.
- Hold it until the system is fully loaded (the Safe Mode will appear at the bottom of the screen).
- In Safe Mode, disable TalkBack through standard settings (see Method 1).
After you exit Safe Mode (a simple reboot), all settings will be saved, and TalkBack will remain disabled.
