When a smartphone suddenly starts to sound every touch of the screen, highlight elements with a green outline and refuse to respond to normal swipes, it often puts users into a state of panic. It is not a virus or a breakdown of the display, but an activated feature of special features called TalkBack, or in the Russian-language interface Talbik, which is designed for visually impaired people, but accidentally turned on, it makes control of the device almost impossible for the average user.
On Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco smartphones, this feature is built deep into the MIUI or HyperOS shell system, and standard one-touch shutdown methods often don’t work here because of the interface. To get the phone back to normal, you need to understand the logic of control in this mode or use alternative button-down or remote control methods.
In this article, we’ll take a look at all the known ways to deactivate voice assistant, from the classic double-tape method to radical reset via Mi Cloud. You’ll learn to distinguish between control modes and understand how to prevent this feature from accidentally activating in the future so that your Android becomes responsive again.
What is TalkBack and why it is the same
TalkBack is part of the Android accessibility service, which provides voice feedback to visually impaired users. When it is active, the phone announces button names, describes actions, and changes how you interact with the screen: single-touch now only highlights an object, and it requires a double quick click to launch an application. On Xiaomi devices, activation often happens by accident due to a combination of volume keys or through a quick settings menu.
The main reason for spontaneous activation lies in the so-called "hot keys." Owners of Redmi and Poco often unknowingly activate Talbik, clamping both volume buttons simultaneously for 3-5 seconds. The system regards this as a command to turn on special features. In addition, in new versions of MIUI firmware, the on-point can be located in the notification curtain, and an accidental swipe on the lock screen also leads to the launch of voiceover.
It's important to understand that Talbik is not a standalone application that can be simply removed, it's a system service that is deeply integrated into the operating system, and it requires constant monitoring of user activity, which can significantly reduce battery autonomy and increase the load on the processor, which is why if you don't use the feature all the time, it's better to keep it off.
⚠️ Attention: When Talbik is active, navigating the menu becomes difficult. Any casual touch can open the app or change the setting. Be extremely careful when trying to turn off, so as not to disrupt important system parameters.
Universal way to disconnect through settings
The best and safest way to deactivate is to use the standard settings menu. However, as the interface is changed, you will have to adapt to the new control logic. In TalkBack mode, all actions are performed in two stages: first you select an element (it is surrounded by a green frame), and then you activate it by double-pressing at any point on the screen. To scroll the lists, use two fingers at the same time.
The way Xiaomi works is this: First, unlock your phone using a double-click on a PIN or pattern lock. Then look for the Settings icon. Tap-tap will open the menu. You need to scroll through the list with two fingers to Advanced Settings or Advanced Options, and then find the Special Opportunities item.
Inside the feature menu, find the Vision tab or TalkBack immediately. When you enter it, you'll see a large switch. To turn it off, click on it once to highlight, then quickly tap on any free area of the screen twice. The system can request confirmation of action - again double click on the Stop or Disable button.
☑️ Checklist of disconnection through settings
If you can't find the menu because of navigation difficulties, try using voice search. On the home screen, call Google Assistant or Mi AI (usually a swipe from the bottom corner or a long home button if it's set up). Say the phrase "Disable TalkBack" or "Disable Talbik." The system can automatically redirect you to the desired settings section, which will make it much easier to do.
Method of disabling by a combination of buttons
Android and MIUI have a fast access to accessibility features, which is often the cause of the problem, but it can also be the solution. If the screen responds to clicks but you can't get into the settings menu because of chaotic transitions, try using a physical key combination.
The standard combination for Talbik toggling is to simultaneously press both Volume Up + Volume Down buttons for 3-5 seconds. On some Redmi and Poco models with a side fingerprint scanner, this combination can be changed or require voice confirmation. If the phone vibrates or emits an audible signal, then the command is accepted.
In case the simple combination doesn't work, you may have changed the trigger in your settings. Check (when you can) which activation method is the default one. Sometimes, long-term retention of the power button helps if you have a shortcut for the power button on the feature menu, although this is less common on modern Android versions.
⚠️ Warning: Do not hold the buttons tight for too long (more than 10 seconds), otherwise the phone may go into emergency call or forced reboot mode, which will interrupt the setup process, but will not necessarily turn off the service itself.
There is also a method of blind navigation if the screen is partially unresponsive or the sensor is glitchy. Try to quickly press the volume button up three times in a row. On some versions of MIUI, this action triggers zoom menus or switches availability modes. If you're lucky, you'll hear a voice confirmation "TalkBack is off."
Use of Google Assistant and Mi Voice
Voice assistants can be a lifeline when tactile control is impossible. Google Assistant has deep access rights to Android system settings. To use this method, make sure the phone is connected to the Internet. Call the assistant with the phrase "OK, Google" or a long press of the home/power button.
Once the assistant is activated, clearly say “Disable TalkBack” or “Disable Talbik.” If speech recognition works correctly, the system will execute the request instantly. On Xiaomi devices, the command for the built-in Mi AI assistant can also work, although it does not cope with system settings on global firmware.
If voice input doesn't work the first time, try using a keyboard to input text in a dialogue with the assistant. Click on the keyboard icon in the Google Assistant interface and type "Turn off TalkBack." Text input is often handled more accurately than voice input, especially in noisy environments.

Remote shutdown via Mi Cloud
If the phone’s screen is completely unresponsive to touch, broken, or you simply can’t get into settings due to the chaotic behavior of the interface, the most effective solution will be remote control.Mi Cloud (or Find My Device from Google) allows you to get full control of the smartphone from a computer or other device.
To do this, you'll need to access the Internet on a problem phone and know the Mi Account account that's logged in. Go to the official i.mi.com website from any browser. Enter your login and password. If the phone is online and geolocated, you'll see it on the map.
In the device management menu, find Remote Control. Once connected, you'll see your smartphone screen on your computer monitor. With your mouse, you can go safely, without double clicks and green bezels, through: Settings → Advanced Settings → Special Options → TalkBack and turn off the switch. This is the most reliable way for difficult cases.
| Method | Conditions required | Difficulty | Efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Through settings | Working sensor, knowledge of gestures | Medium | Tall. |
| Button combination | Working volume buttons | Low. | Medium |
| Google Assistant | Internet, configured assistant | Low. | Tall. |
| Mi Cloud (Remotely) | Internet, Mi Account, PC | Tall. | Maximum |
It’s worth noting that the remote control feature must be pre-activated in the phone’s settings, although many Xiaomi have it enabled by default when you sign in.If you’ve never used Mi Cloud before, this method may not work and you’ll have to resort to more complex options.
💡
Remote control via Mi Cloud is the only way to deal with Talbik if the touchscreen has completely stopped responding to commands.
Resetting settings as a last resort
When none of the softer methods work and the phone turns into an unmanageable brick, the final argument is a full reset to factory settings (Hard Reset), which is guaranteed to disable Talbik, as it will return all system parameters to the original state, but you will lose all data not stored in the cloud.
Recovery mode is used to reset Xiaomi and Redmi. Turn off the phone completely. Then press the power button and the volume button at the same time. + Volume Up. Hold them until the Mi logo appears, then let go of power, but keep the volume up until the Recovery menu appears.
In the Recovery menu, the touch screen is not working, and Talbik is not active. Navigation is done with volume buttons (up/down), and the choice is with the power button. Choose a language (English), then Wipe Data → Wipe All Data. Confirm action. Once you reboot, the phone will be as new, and the problem with the voice assistant will disappear forever.
⚠️ Warning: Hard Reset deletes photos, contacts and apps. Use this method only if you are sure that important data is stored in a Google or Mi Cloud account, or if its loss is not critical for you.
💡
Before performing a full reset, if possible, connect the phone to your computer in MTP mode and copy important photos and documents to the hard drive, as after reset it will be impossible to restore them.
How to Prevent Accidental Incorporation in the Future
After successfully shutting down Talbik, it's important to make sure that things don't happen again. → Advanced settings → Special opportunities → Special Opportunity shortcut (or "Special Opportunity Keys"). Here you can turn off the response to the volume buttons pressed or change the combination to a more complex one that is difficult to accidentally press.
It is also recommended to remove Talbik widget from the quick settings curtain.Put down the notification curtain, tap on the pencil (edit) and drag the TalkBack icon from the active zone to the bottom list of hidden buttons. This will eliminate random activation by one swipe.
Update your system regularly. Xiaomi engineers are constantly working to improve user intent recognition algorithms, and new versions of HyperOS reduce the chance of accidental activation thanks to additional confirmations.
Remember that accessibility features are designed to help, but in the hands of the average user can be a source of problems.
