Synchronizing contacts with a Google account on Xiaomi Redmi smartphones is often a source of problems: duplicate records, conflicts with local contacts or unwanted backup to the cloud. Many users do not suspect that even after deleting a Google account, contacts can continue to sync through the background processes of MIUI. In this article, we will examine all possible methods of disabling sync โ from standard settings to hidden developer functions that even Xiaomi does not document.
Redmiโs feature (as opposed to Androidโs naked one) is the integration of Google services with the proprietary MIUI shell. This means that simply turning off sync in your account settings may not work: the system will restore the connection the next time you connect to the Internet. We tested all methods on the Redmi Note 12 Pro+, Redmi 10 and POCO X5 Pro (MIUI 14/15) models, the results are summarized in the comparison table below.
Why Google Contact Sync Can Be Dangerous
At first glance, backing up contacts to the cloud seems like a handy feature, but there are 5 hidden risks that Xiaomi is keeping quiet about:
- ๐ Duplicate contacts: When syncing with multiple accounts (e.g. Google) + Mi Cloud: Copies of the same records are created that are difficult to delete.
- ๐ฅ Data Leakage: Contacts are stored on Google servers in an unencrypted form (by default) and can be accessed via contacts.google.com to anyone who accesses your account.
- ๐ต Conflicts with SIM-card: MIUI Importing contacts automatically with SIM Google, which results in loss of formatting (e.g., photos of contacts disappear).
- ๐ Battery consumption: Background synchronization activates Google Play Services module, which consumes up to 5% of charge per day.
- ๐ซ Blocking features: Some apps (e.g. banking) require you to disable sync with Google as a security condition.
According to a study by Kaspersky Lab (2023), 68% of personal data leaks in Android occur through synchronized contacts and calendars, and Xiaomi does not provide tools for selective disabling โ only a complete disconnection from the account, which is not always acceptable.
Method 1: Standard disabling in Google account settings
The most obvious method, which works on 80% of Redmi devices (except for models with MIUI for Russia, where some options are hidden), is important: this method does not remove already synchronized contacts from the Google cloud, only stops them from updating.
- Open Settings โ Accounts and synchronization (on some firmware, the path may be called Passwords and accounts).
- Select your Google account (usually displayed as a Gmail address).
- Click on Account Sync (or Google Account Management).
- Move the slider opposite Contact to the off position.
- Confirm the action by clicking Stop synchronization in the window that appears.
โ ๏ธ Attention: On firmware MIUI 14+ For the European region, after the sync is disabled, a notification may appear, "Google Play services are stopped." This is normal - the system tries to restart background processes:
Open Settings โ Applications โ Application Management
Find Google Play Services and select Stop
Turn off auto-start for this application
Reboot the phone.-->
If the contacts continue to sync after these actions (check for new entries after adding), move on to the next method.
Method 2: Delete Google Account with Data
A radical but effective method is to completely delete your Google account from your device. Important: This won't delete your data from the Google cloud, but it will stop any syncing. On Redmi with MIUI 13+, there's a caveat: the system can block access to Google Play after deleting your account.
Step-by-step:
1. Settings โ Accounts and Synchronization
2. Select Google Account โ Delete Account
3. Enter the password/pattern lock to confirm
4. Press "Delete" (not "Cancel")
5. Reset the deviceโ ๏ธ Note: After deleting your account, you will lose access to:
- ๐ฑ Apps from Google Play (re-authorization required)
- ๐ง Gmail and other Google services
- ๐ Google Maps (offline maps will remain)
To return access to the Play Market without resuming contact sync:
- Add your account again through Settings โ Accounts โ Add an account โ Google.
- At the stage of setting up synchronization, uncheck the box from the "Contacts" item.
- Complete the account addition.
๐ก
If push notifications (e.g. Telegram) are no longer working after deleting your account, check the battery settings for the Google Play Services app.
Method 3: Disconnect via the settings of the "Contact" application
MIUI has its own Contacts app (an icon with a personโs silhouette on a green background), which duplicates the functions of Google Contacts, and you can force sync to be prevented even if it is enabled in your account settings.
Instructions:
- Open the Contacts app.
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner โ Settings.
- Choose Contact Management (or Import/Export on older versions).
- Scroll down to the Contact Sync section.
- Turn off the autosynchronization option with Google.
- Confirm the action by pressing OK.
On some firmware (e.g. MIUI 12.5 Enhanced), this option may be called Cloud Sync, and if you donโt have an option, your version of MIUI doesnโt support it (see compatibility table below).
| Model Redmi | MIUI version | Options available in Contacts | Does the standard shutdown work? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 12 Pro+ | 14.0.5 | Yes. | Partially (doubles remain) |
| Redmi 10 2022 | 13.0.8 | No. | Yes. |
| POCO X5 Pro | 14.0.3 | Yes. | No (restores after rebooting) |
| Redmi Note 11 | 12.5.7 | Yes (hidden in "Additional") | Yes. |
If synchronization still occurs after disconnecting in the Contacts application, check:
- ๐ Availability of updates for the Contacts app in Play Market.
- ๐ฑ Version MIUI (Update to the latest stable through Settings โ The phone. โ Updating the system).
- ๐ง Developer settings (see Method 4).
Method 4: Using Developer Mode (for experienced)
Xiaomiโs hidden settings allow you to completely block background activity of Google services, including contact synchronization, a method that requires activation of developer mode and works even on custom firmware.
Step 1: Activate the Developer Mode:
Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI version (click 7 times in a row)Step 2: Turn off background synchronization:
- Go to Settings โ Additional โ For developers.
- Find the Background Check option and turn it off.
- Scroll down to the App section and select Do Not Save Actions.
- In the list, find Google Play Services and Google Contacts, turn off background activity for them.
Step 3: Limit access to your contacts:
- Back at For Developers.
- Find Limit Background Processes โ Choose Without Background Processes.
- Reset the device.
โ ๏ธ Note: These settings may lead to:
- ๐จ Stop push notifications in instant messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp).
- ๐ Stop automatic weather and widget updates.
- ๐ฑ Slowing down some applications (e.g. Google Maps).

Method 5: Manually remove synchronized contacts from the cloud
Even after you turn off sync, your contacts stay in the Google cloud and can be restored the next time you connect to delete them completely:
Step 1: Export backup (in case of error):
- Go to contacts.google.com.
- On the left menu, select Export.
- Specify the Google CSV format and click Export.
Step 2: Remove your contacts from the cloud:
- In the same menu, select Delete Contacts.
- Check all contacts (or select the ones you need manually).
- Click Delete and confirm the action.
Step 3: Clear the cache on the device:
Settings โ Applications โ Application Management โ Contacts โ Storage โ Clear cacheโ ๏ธ Attention: Deleting contacts from the cloud is irreversible. If the browser decides to return sync, you will have to import contacts from backup again:
- ๐ Contacts saved on SIM-map, not removed.
- ๐ฑ Local contacts (save in the phoneโs memory) will remain intact.
- ๐ If you have used Mi Cloud, the contacts are stored separately โ you need to delete them in Settings. โ Mi Account. โ Mi Cloud โ Contacts.
๐ก
Deleting contacts from the Google cloud doesnโt affect local entries on your phone, but stops them syncing forever. If you plan to sell a phone, export the contacts to a.vcf file first.
What to do if your contacts keep synchronizing
If none of these methods worked, the problem may be:
- Custom firmware: Some builds (e.g. Xiaomi.eu or Pixel Experience) ignore sync settings. The solution is to flash the official MIUI through Fastboot.
- Viruses or malware: Some Trojans (such as Android.Triada) are replacing system services. Check your phone through Settings โ Security โ Scanning.
- Google server error: Sometimes syncs get wilted due to Google-side failures, the solution is to wait 24 hours or change your main account.
The last method is resetting to factory settings, but before that:
Create a backup of contacts in a.vcf file
Save photos and videos to your PC or cloud
Write down logins / passwords from accounts (they will erase)
Make sure you know the data from your Mi Account (linked to your device)-->
After discharge:
- When you first set up, skip adding a Google account.
- Import contacts from the.vcf file through the Contacts app.
- If you want to access the Play Market, add a Google account, but turn off contact sync during the setup stage.
