This feature is often turned on automatically after a major system update or the first device activation. Xiaomi positions this as part of the ecosystem, offering a “personalized experience.” In reality, it is a mechanism that consumes additional traffic and battery power while running in the background. The system service periodically turns to servers to download new image packets, even if you do not use them.
It's important to understand the difference between a regular live wallpaper and a Carousel. Live wallpaper is an animated background that you choose in a gallery. Wallpaper carousel is a separate aggregator application that has its own access and settings, and that's what you need to look for and disable if you want a static picture.
Some users confuse this feature with the theme. If changing the theme changes icons, fonts and sounds, then the Carousel affects only the lock screen. Disabling one function does not affect another, which gives flexibility in setting up the interface. However, if you like to change themes often, the system may insist on including a change of backgrounds, considering it as part of a single style.
