Why Xiaomi TVs are restricting traffic and when they get in the way
The Xiaomi TV Save Traffic mode (Mi TV, Redmi TV, Mi TV A, and others) is activated by default to reduce network load, which is useful if you have a limited Internet tariff or a weak Wi-Fi signal, but in most cases it only interferes with: reduces the quality of video on YouTube, Netflix or KinoPoisk, slows down the download of applications and creates delays when online games.
The impact of traffic savings on 4K models (such as the Mi TV Q2 75" or Redmi Smart TV X55) is particularly noticeable, where automatic speed limits result in a soap image or constant buffering, with many users unaware that the problem lies in the system settings, not in the provider.
In this article, we will look at all the ways to turn off traffic savings, from standard settings to hidden settings for power users, and how to check if the restriction is lifted, and what to do if the settings are not saved.
Method 1: Disconnection through basic network settings
The easiest method is to use the built-in Xiaomi TV menu, which is suitable for most models based on PatchWall (firmware for the Indian and global markets) or MIUI TV (Chinese version), the instruction is universal for TVs of 2018-2026 release.
Steps to shut down:
- Turn on the TV and on the main screen press the button Settings (cogs) on the remote.
- Go to Network & Internet (or Network and Internet in Russian).
- Choose your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection (if you use cable).
- Scroll down to Data Saver and move the slider to the Off position.
- Confirm the action if there is a warning about increased data consumption.
On some models (such as the Mi TV 4X 55), this item may be called Bandwidth Control or Limit Data Usage. If you don't find it, check the Advanced Settings tab.

β οΈ Attention: On TVs with firmware MIUI TV 3.0 and below (release until 2020) the traffic saving point may not be in the GUI. In this case, use the method with the engineering menu.
Method 2: Reset network settings (if the savings are turned on by itself)
Sometimes users are faced with a situation where traffic savings are activated automatically after updating the firmware or restarting the TV, this is due to a bug in the Xiaomi system, which occurs on the Mi TV P1 and Redmi TV A55 models with firmware from 2022-2023.
To fix the problem:
- π Reset network settings: go to Settings β System system β Reset β Reset your network settings. You'll have to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
- π₯ Update the firmware: check for updates in Settings β On TV. β System updates, in versions MIUI TV 4.0+ bug fixed.
- π Use wired connection: if the problem persists, connect the TV to the router via Ethernet β on cable connections, traffic savings are often turned off automatically.
If the reset didnβt work, try turning off automatic app updates in Settings β Apps β Auto Update. Sometimes the background activity of apps causes the system to activate savings.
Why does the traffic saving turn on itself?
Method 3: Manually changing parameters in the engineering menu
For advanced users who donβt have a traffic saving option in their standard settings, thereβs a way to disable the restriction via the engineering menu, which works on all Xiaomi TV models, but requires caution β incorrect changes can lead to crashes.
Instructions:
- On the remote, click sequentially: Menu β Settings β All Settings β General β Device Preferences β About β Build Number 7 times until the βYouβve become a developerβ notification appears.
- Go back to the main settings menu and open a new Developer Options section.
- Find Network Debugging or Network Debugging and activate it.
- Enter the following command in the Network Command field: setprop persist.sys.data_saver 0 and press OK.
- Restart the TV (Settings β System β Reboot).
Once this command is executed, the traffic savings will be turned off at the system level and cannot be turned on back through the standard menu. If you want to return the restriction, use the setprop command. persist.sys.data_saver 1.
| Model TV set | Does it support the engineering menu? | Do you need unlocking? |
|---|---|---|
| Mi TV 4A/4S (2018β2020) | Yes. | No. |
| Mi TV Q1/Q2 (2021β2023) | Yes. | Yes (developer mode needed) |
| Redmi Smart TV X (2022β2026) | Yes. | No. |
| Mi TV P1 (2021) | Yes. | Yes (for firmware below 3.1.1) only |
π‘
If the TV stops connecting to Wi-Fi after you enter the command, reset your network settings or run the command setprop persist.sys.wifi.debug 1 for diagnosis.
Method 4: Set up a router to bypass restrictions
If you can't turn off the traffic savings on the TV itself, you can take a different path, which is to prioritize the traffic on the router, and that will force the network to ignore the restrictions that Xiaomi is trying to impose.
How to do this:
- π Go to the router control panel (usually at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
- π Find the QoS (Quality of Service) section or Device Priority.
- π± Add in. MAC-The address of your TV is on the priority list. MAC You can set up β On TV. β Network status.
- π Set the maximum bandwidth for this device (e.g. 100 Mbps).
For Xiaomi Mi Router or Redmi Router routers, the path will be: Settings β Additional β QoS β QoS Rules β Add a rule.
Select Po MAC-Enter the address of the TV and set the priority High.
This method is especially useful if you have multiple devices on the network and the TV βcompetesβ for traffic from laptops or smartphones. Once you set up the router, the traffic savings on Xiaomi TV will become ineffective, as data will come with the highest priority.
π‘
Setting up QoS on a router is a one-stop solution that works independently of the TV firmware, but requires access to the router's administrator panel.
How to Check if Traffic Savings Are Actually Disabled
Turn off the restriction is half the battle, make sure the change is in effect, and here are 3 reliable ways to verify it.
- Speed test: π± Install Speedtest by Ookla from Google Play on your TV. π Run the test and compare the results with other devices on your network, and if the speed on TV is the same (or higher) - the savings are turned off.
- Checking on YouTube: π₯ Open the video in resolution 4K or 1080p60. π Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Stats for nerds). π If the Connection Speed bar shows a value close to your real internet speed (e.g. 50 Mbps instead of 5 Mbps) β the restriction is removed.
- Monitoring of network activity: π₯οΈ Connect the TV to the PC via ADB (the instruction below) and execute the command: adb shell netstats detail π Check the Rx Bytes column. If the value grows rapidly when you watch a video, traffic savings are turned off.
If the speed is low after all the manipulations, the problem may not be with the settings of the TV, but with the router, ISP or cable. Try connecting the TV to another network (for example, via a mobile hotspot) for diagnosis.
Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
When you turn off traffic savings, users often face typical problems, and here are the most common ones and how to solve them:
- β Settings are not saved after restarting: This is typical for TVs with firmware MIUI TV 2.0-3.0 Solution: After turning off traffic savings, immediately update the firmware to the latest version or reset to factory settings (Settings) β System system β Reset β Reset all settings).
- β No "Data Saver" item in the menu: On some models (e.g. Mi) TV 4C) This is hidden. Use the engineering menu method or update the firmware.
- β After turning off traffic savings lays Wi-Fi: This means the router is not coping with the load.Solution: switch the TV to 5 GHz band (if it supports) or connect via an Ethernet cable.
- β Applications (Netflix, Prime Video) still show poor quality: Some streaming services have their own traffic saving settings. For example, Netflix needs to go to Settings β Video quality and select High quality.
β οΈ Note: If after turning off the traffic savings, the TV starts to βhangβ when loading heavy content (for example, games in Google Stadia), try to limit the background activity of applications. β Annexes β Auto-start and disable unnecessary programs.
