Why Xiaomi’s First Letter Gets Big and How to Fix It

Have you noticed that on your Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphone, the first letter after the dot, exclamation point, or even at the beginning of a new message automatically converts to a capital one? This is not a coincidence, but the operation of the built-in keyboard autocorrection function in MIUI firmware. This behavior can be annoying, especially if you often write in an informal style, use acronyms or nicknames in games.

The manufacturer has added this feature to improve the user experience — it is supposed to make the texts more literate. However, in practice, the automatic capital letter often works inappropriately: in logins, hashtags, code or when you specifically want to write a word with a small letter. Fortunately, you can turn this option off in several ways, and we will consider all the current methods for MIUI 12, MIUI 13 and MIUI 14.

It is important to understand that the configuration depends on two factors: 1) MIUI versions - in new firmware, the path to options can change. 2 The keyboard used - the standard Gboard (from Google) and the branded Mi Keyboard are configured differently.

In this article, you will find instructions for both cases, as well as alternative solutions if standard methods don’t work.

Method 1: Disable autocapital letter in the standard Xiaomi keyboard (Mi Keyboard)

If you use a pre-installed Mi Keyboard, the algorithm will be as follows: This method works on most models, including the Xiaomi 13/14, Redmi Note 12/11, POCO F5/X5 and other devices with MIUI 12-14.

Step instructions:

1. Open any application where you can type text (such as Messages or Notes).
2. Tap the input field to make the Mi Keyboard appear.
3. Press the gear. ⚙️ (settings icon) in the top row of the keyboard.
4. Select Auto-Replacement and Auto-Fill (or Auto-Replacement in older versions).
5. Scroll down and find the option Automatic capital letter (sometimes called capital after characters).
6. Move the slider to the off position.

After that, the changes will take effect immediately - check if the problem is gone by writing a few sentences with points.If the option is missing in your Mi Keyboard version, try updating the keyboard via Google Play or use an alternative method from the next section.

Method 2: Set up autocapital letter in Gboard (Google keyboard)

Many Xiaomi users prefer Gboard over the standard keyboard for its advanced features and stability. If you use a Google keyboard, the process of turning off the automatic capital letter will be different.

Steps for Gboard:

• 📱 Open any text field and call the Gboard keyboard.
• 🔧 Click on the gear icon in the top keyboard panel (near the emoji button).
• 📝 Select Text Settings → Auto-replacement.
• 🔍 Find the option Capitals after punctuation marks (or Autocapital letters).
• ☑️ Take the tick off or move the slider to the off position..

In some versions of Gboard, this option may be in the Correction or Additional Settings section. If you don't see the right option, try updating the keyboard to the latest version - in older builds, the functionality may have differed.

Note: On devices with MIUI, there is sometimes a conflict between system settings and Gboard. If the problem persists after the keyboard option is turned off, check the autoreplace system settings (see Method 4).

Method 3: Disable via MIUI system settings (for all keyboards)

If previous methods didn't work, the problem could be the system-level global autocorrect settings, and MIUI has hidden parameters that affect the behavior of all keyboards, including third-party ones.

Step-by-step:

1. Go to Settings → Additional settings → Language and input.
2. Select Keyboard and Entering Methods (or Keyboard Management in newer versions).
3. Click on the System settings of the keyboard (may be called Text Settings).
4. Find the Auto Replacement or Autocorrection section.
5. Turn off options: Automatic capital capitalization after punctuation Correct two capital letters (if any)

Important: In MIUI 14, the path to these settings may be different – search for them by settings (the magnifier icon in the upper right corner).

If you don’t see these options, they may be hidden because of regional settings or modified firmware, and resetting keyboard settings (see Method 6) will help.

Method 4: Use of alternative keyboards (SwiftKey, Fleksy, etc.)

If standard methods don't work, consider installing a third-party keyboard. Many alternative solutions offer more flexible auto-replace settings. For example, Microsoft SwiftKey or Fleksy can completely disable automatic text correction.

Advantages of alternative keyboards:

If you often write code or use terminal commands, install the Termux:API or Hacker’s Keyboard keyboard – they have auto-replacement disabled by default.

Method 5: Editing system files (for advanced users)

If none of the above methods worked, the radical solution is manual editing of configuration files, which is only suitable for users with unlocked bootloader and root rights, since it requires access to system folders.

⚠️ Attention: Incorrect editing of system files may result in data loss or device failure.Before you start, make a backup copy through TWRP Or Mi Flash Tool.

Instructions for experienced users:

1. Install a file manager with root support (such as Root Explorer or FX File Explorer).
2. Go to /system/usr/keylayout/ or /vendor/usr/keylayout/
3. Find files with the.kl extension (e.g. Generic.kl or qwerty.kl).
4. Open the file in the text editor and find the lines containing: key 158 BACK key 28 ENTER key 14 CAPSLOCK
5. Add a line after them: key 115 VOLUME_UP WAKE_DROPPED (This will disable automatic register conversion).
6. Save the file, set the rights to 644 (rw-r--r---) and restart the device.

This method does not work on all versions of MIUI, as the manufacturer can change the structure of the system files. If after editing the keyboard stopped working, restore the original file from the backup.

Method 6: Resetting keyboard settings to factory

If all attempts to disable the automatic capital letter fail, the last chance is to reset the keyboard to factory settings, which will remove all user words from the dictionary and return the standard auto-replacement settings.

How to reset the keyboard:

• 🔄 For Mi Keyboard: Go to Settings → Annexes → App management. Find Mi Keyboard and select Warehouse. Click Clear Data and Clear Cache.

Gboard

1. Open Settings → System → Language and input → Virtual keyboard.
2. Select Gboard → Additional settings → Reset settings.

⚠️ Attention: Reset will remove all added words from the keyboard's personal vocabulary. After the procedure, you will have to retrain the keyboard with your frequently used words and phrases. If you synced data to your Google account (in the case of Gboard), it can be restored after you log in.

After reset, check if there is a problem with capital letters. If so, it is probably the MIUI system settings that are to blame, and alternative keyboards should be considered (see Method 4).

Resetting your keyboard is a last resort, and try all other ways before you do that, as it can take days of active use to restore your personal vocabulary.
