Recording phone conversations on Xiaomi Redmi 8 is a useful feature that helps you capture important conversations, interviews or just save memorable conversations. However, many users are faced with the fact that the standard MIUI settings are not always obvious, and in some firmwares the recording option is completely hidden. In this article, we will analyze all the available ways to activate recordings, from built-in tools to third-party applications, and also explain how to avoid typical errors (for example, when recording is not saved or interrupted).
The Redmi 8 (codenamed olive) is that it came out in 2019 with MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie, but later received updates to MIUI 12 and Android 10. This means that depending on the firmware version, the path to recording settings may differ, and in some regional builds the function is completely disabled for legal reasons.
1. Checking support for recording conversations in your firmware
Before you set up a record, make sure your version of MIUI supports this feature. In some countries (e.g. the EU), recording calls is prohibited by law, so Xiaomi can block it in official builds.
To check for the presence of the function:
- π± Open the phone application (pipe icon).
- π Click on three dots in the upper right corner β Select Settings.
- π€ Scroll down and look for Recording Conversations or Call Recording (English version).
If there is no paragraph, it means:
- β Your firmware does not support recording (typical for European). ROM).
- βοΈ The function is hidden and requires activation via Engineer Mode or ADB.
- π We need to update. MIUI Up to the latest version (see Section 3).
β οΈ Note: In Russia, recording of conversations is allowed only with the notification of the interlocutor (Article 23 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation), otherwise the recording cannot be used as evidence in court.
2. Enable recording through standard MIUI settings
If your firmware supports the function, you can activate it in 3 steps:
- Open the phone appΒ» β Settings (βοΈ) β Recording of conversations.
- Turn on Automatic Recording Switch or select Record Manual (if you want to control the process).
- Tell me which calls to record: π All calls (including outgoing calls). π₯ Only incoming. π€ Only outgoing. π Selected contacts (to be noted in the phone book).
After activation during the call, a microphone icon will appear (π€) β Click on it to start/stop recording. Files are saved in the folder MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec memory.
The "Recording Conversations" menu has switched on|A badge has appeared. π€ ring-bell|Files are saved in a folder call_rec|Listened to the test audio (no noise)
-->
An important nuance: on the Redmi 8 with MIUI 12, recording can automatically shut down when battery power is low (less than 15%).This is done to save energy, but prevents long conversations from being fixed. To turn off the restriction, go to Settings β Battery β Power Saving Mode β Exceptions and add the Phone app to the list.
3. Update MIUI to Appear Recording Function
If your firmware doesn't have a recording option, try updating MIUI. For Redmi 8, the current versions are:
| MIUI version | Android | Support for recording | Download link |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIUI 12.0.3 | Android 10 | Yes (in global and Indian assembly) | Official website |
| MIUI 11.0.8 | Android 9 | Partially (manual recording only) | Official website |
| MIUI 10.2.10 | Android 9 | No (patch required) | β |
How to update:
- Go to Settings β About the phone β System update.
- Click Check for updates.
- If a new version is available, download it (we recommend using Wi-Fi, as the file weighs ~1.5-2 GB).
- After downloading, click Reboot and install.
How to set up Cube Call Recorder ACR:

Problem: On Android 10+, some apps canβt record calls due to Googleβs restrictions. The solution is to use Boldbeast with Fix recording issues β Change audio route.
Why donβt apps record calls to Android 10?
5. Hidden methods: Engineer Mode and ADB
If you are ready for experiments, you can activate the recording via an engineering menu or ADB. These methods are suitable for firmware where the function is locked but technically supported.
Method 1: Engineer Mode (only for MIUI 11 and below)
- Open the Phone app and enter the code ##4636##.
- Go to the Phone Information section.
- Scroll down and find Turn on VoLTE (if you have an option, recording conversations can be unlocked).
- Go back to your phone settings and check for Record conversations.
Instructions:
- Connect Redmi 8 to your PC via USB (select File Transfer Mode).
- Open the command line (Win) + R β Enter cmd) and execute: adb shell settings put global call_recording_support 1
- Reboot the phone. After that, the record point should appear in the phone settings.
β οΈ Attention: Misuse of the right ADB If the recording doesn't appear after the commands, return the value to 0 by the same command.
6 Where records are stored and how to keep them
By default, record files are stored in the phoneβs internal memory along the way:
- π For standard recording MIUI: /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec/.
- π For the Cube. ACR: /storage/emulated/0/CallRecordings/.
- π For Boldbeast: /storage/emulated/0/Boldbeast/.
To transfer the recordings to the PC or the cloud:
- Connect your phone to your computer via USB (in File Transfer mode).
- Open the entries folder (see the paths above) and copy the files (usually in.amr or.mp3) format.
- For automatic synchronization, use Google Drive or Dropbox (you can turn on autoload in the recording application settings).
Problem: Sometimes records are not saved due to lack of disk space. β If the storage is less than 1 GB, delete the unnecessary files or transfer them to the storage. SD-map (if installed).
π‘
Record files take up little space (1 minute of talk = ~1 MB in AMR format), but when used actively, hundreds of files can accumulate. Clean the folder regularly or set up automatic deletion of old records in the application.
7. Solving typical problems
If the recording is not working, check these points:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| No βRecording conversationsβ item in the settings | The firmware does not support the function | Update MIUI or use a third-party app |
| Recording ends in 1-2 minutes | Energy saving blocks the microphone | Add the phone to battery exclusions |
| The interviewee is not heard (only your voice) | The wrong sound source in the app | In the recording settings, select Voice Communication. |
| Files are not saved. | Lack of rights or disk space | Clear the memory or reconfigure the save folder |
If after all the manipulations the recording does not work, try:
- π Reset your phone settings to factory (Settings) β Additionally. β Backup and reset β Resetting settings).
- π² Install custom firmware (e.g. Pixel Experience) where recording works stably.
- π§ Use an external voice recorder (connect the second phone to a conversation via conference call).
