The timer on Xiaomi devices is a versatile tool that can be useful in everyday life, sports, cooking or for monitoring work hours. Depending on the model (smartphone, Mi Band smartwatch, Mi Smart Speaker speaker or even robot vacuum cleaner), the settings may differ, but the principles remain similar. In this article, we will analyze all possible scenarios, from the standard countdown on the phone to automatically turning off music through the voice assistant XiaoAI.
Xiaomi’s ecosystem features deep integration between devices, such as a timer running on a Redmi Note 12 smartphone that can sync with the Mi Band 8 and vibrate on the wrist, and the Mi Smart Speaker series’ smart speakers can configure voice control of the timer via the command “Xiao Ai, set a timer for 10 minutes,” and we’ll look not only at basic features, but also at hidden features that aren’t mentioned in the official instructions.
1.Timer on Xiaomi smartphones: standard features
On all Xiaomi smartphones (from the budget Redmi to the flagship Xiaomi 14), the timer is built into the Watch app.
- Go to the app menu and find the Watch icon (usually in blue or black with the dial).
- In the bottom panel, select the Timer tab (an hourglass icon).
- Turn the dial or click on the numbers to set the time.
By default, MIUI has presets: 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 30 minutes and 1 hour, but you can set any value up to 23 hours 59 minutes. Once you start, the timer will appear in the notification panel, and after time, the sound will go off (you can change the tune in the settings).
If you need multiple timers at once, click on the + icon in the upper right corner, which is useful, for example, when cooking multiple meals with different cooking times. Note that on older versions of MIUI (below 12), multiple timers may have been running simultaneously, and this problem has been fixed in new firmware.
⚠️ Note: If the timer doesn’t work, check if the Watch app has been added to the list of optimized Settings. → Battery → Optimize the battery, otherwise the system may suspend its operation in the background.
Voice Timer via XiaoAI: How to Control Voice
On devices that support XiaoAI voice assistant (smartphones, Mi Smart Speaker speakers, some Mi TV models), the timer can be started without manual input.
- 🗣️ «Xiao Ai, set the timer for 15 minutes»
- 🗣️ «Run the timer for 2 hours»
- 🗣️ «Remind me in 45 minutes" (this will create a reminder, not a timer, but functionally similar)
The voice timer is convenient when your hands are busy (such as cooking or training). On Xiaomi smart speakers, when the timer is triggered, the voice alert sounds, and on a smartphone, the standard signal. To cancel the timer with a voice, say, “Xiao Ai, cancel the timer.”
If the voice assistant does not respond:
- Make sure that XiaoAI is enabled in Settings → Additional → Voice Assistant.
- Check your internet connection (Xiaomi cloud is required to process voice commands).
- Update the XiaoAI app to Google Play or the Mi App Store.
💡
If the voice assistant doesn’t recognize commands correctly, try speaking more clearly or switching to English (in some regions, Russian recognition is worse).
3.Timer on smart watches Mi Band and Watch
On the Mi Band 7/8 fitness bracelets and Xiaomi Watch smartwatch, the timer is customized via the device menu or the accompanying Mi Fitness (Zepp Life for new models) app. Instructions for Mi Band 8:
Scroll through the bracelet screen to “More”
Select "Timer" (an hourglass icon)
Set time with swipes up/down
Click on the screen to launch
-->
Features of the timer on the Mi Band:
- 🔋 It works autonomously even if the phone is turned off.
- 🔔 Vibration when triggered (no sound, only tactile signal).
- ⏱️ Maximum time – 1 hour (on the Xiaomi Watch) S3 — 24 hours).
To make the timer work properly, make sure that the bracelet is alerted.
- Open the Mi Fitness app on your phone.
- Go to Profile → Your Device → Notifications.
- Activate the Vibration option on the timer.
⚠️ Note: On Mi Band 6 and older, the timer automatically resets after rebooting the bracelet. If you plan to use it for a long time (for example, to brew broth for 3 hours), it is better to duplicate the timer on the phone.
4.Switch off screen and device timer
In addition to the standard countdown, Xiaomi smartphones can set up automatic screen shutdown or even a full timer shutdown, which is useful, for example, if you fall asleep under YouTube videos or want to limit the time a child uses the phone.
To set the screen-off timer:
- Go to Settings → Display → Sleep Timer.
- Choose a time (15 minutes to 120 minutes).
- Activate the option to turn on the timer.
To turn off the phone completely on the timer, you'll need a third-party application, like Automate or MacroDroid, and you can create a rule in these.
Trigger: Time (for example, 23:00)
Action: Turn off the device (the "power off" command)Some MIUI firmware (e.g., POCO F5) has a hidden delayed shutdown function to activate it:
- Hold the power button until the menu appears.
- Press and hold Turn off - the option Postponed Shutdown will appear.
- Choose a time (up to 60 minutes).
| Function | Max time. | Needs root? | Works on MIUI 14? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep timer (screen) | 120 minutes. | No. | Yes. |
| Delayed shutdown | 60 minutes. | No. | Yes (not on all models) |
| Automatic shutdown (via Automate) | Unlimitedly. | No. | Yes. |
| Timer in Safe Mode | 23 hours 59 minutes | No. | Yes. |

Xiaomi ecosystem allows you to customize timers not only on smartphones, but also on smart devices through the Mi Home app.
- 🔊 Smart speakers: you can start the timer with voice or through an app. Once triggered, the speaker will emit an audible signal.

Select cleaning mode (quiet, standard, intense)How to synchronize timers between devices?
6. Hidden Timer Functions: What MIUI Can Do
There are some undocumented timer features in MIUI firmware that few people know about:
- 🔄 Repetitive timer: in the Watch application, you can set the repeat every time 5/10/30 - It's a minute before you manually stop.

To activate the repeating timer:
- Open the Watch app → Timer.
- Set a time and click on the icon "..." in the upper right corner.
- Select Repeat and specify the interval.
To adjust the custom timer sound:

💡
On some models (such as the POCO X5 Pro) the timer settings are hidden in the “No Sound” mode – useful if you only need visual alert without a signal.
7 Problem Solving: Why the Timer Is Not Working
If the timer on Xiaomi doesn’t work or doesn’t behave correctly, check out the following points:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Timer's not running. | The watch app is optimized with battery | Add it to the exceptions in Settings → Battery |
| No sound when triggered | The sound is turned off or selected "No Sound" | Check the sound settings in the Watch → Timer → Cog |
| The timer is reset after rebooting | Misfunction of MIUI | Update the firmware or reset the settings of the Watch app |
| Voice timer not recognized | Problems with the microphone or the Internet | Check the permissions for XiaoAI and network connection |
If the problem persists, try:
- Clear the app's cache Watches in Settings → Apps → App management → Watches → Clear the cache.
- Update MIUI to the latest version (sometimes bugs are fixed in new builds).
- Reset the settings of the Watch app (in the same application management menu).
⚠️ Note: On devices with custom firmware (for example, LineageOS) a standard timer MIUI In this case, use third-party applications such as Timer Plus or Countdown.
