How to set up a Xiaomi account on your TV: from registration to error fixing

Xiaomi TVs with Android TV or MIUI TV require you to link your account to work properly: installing apps from Google Play, syncing settings and accessing branded services like Mi Home. Without an account, many features will be blocked, and some models will not even complete the initial setup. In this article, we will analyze all the steps from creating a Mi Account to solving typical authorization problems, including errors like โ€œfailed to log inโ€ or โ€œthe server is unavailableโ€.

The feature of Xiaomi TVs (Mi TV A2 series, Mi TV Q2, Redmi Smart TV, etc.) is that they support two types of accounts: a standard Google account (for Android TV) and a proprietary Mi Account (for MIUI TV). At the same time, on some models, Mi Account binding is mandatory even for basic functions, for example, for the remote with voice control. We will tell you how to configure both types of accounts, what they differ from, and what to do if the TV asks for the account of the previous owner (releasible for used devices).

Why do you need a Xiaomi account on your TV?

Many users miss the linking stage of the account, considering it optional, but without Mi Account, you lose the following features:

  • ๐Ÿ“ฅ Install apps from Google Play or Mi App Store (on some models without an account, the app store is not available).
  • โ˜๏ธ Data synchronization: Save a list of channels, image settings, favorite apps between multiple Xiaomi devices.
  • ๐Ÿ”„ Air-to-air software updates (OTA) โ€” Without an account, the TV may not receive critical security patches.
  • ๐ŸŽค Voice assistant (in models with Google Assistant or Xiao) AI) requires authorization.
  • ๐Ÿ”’ Locking your device when you steal (Find My Device only works with a linked account).

On TVs with MIUI TVs (such as Mi TV 4S or Mi TV 5 Pro), Mi Account is also required to:

  • ๐Ÿ“บ Access to branded content (Mi Video, Mi Music).
  • ๐ŸŽฎ Game Turbo mode (requires authorization to save progress).
  • ๐Ÿ“Š Getting personalized recommendations on the home screen.

โš ๏ธ Note: Xiaomi TVs purchased by hand may still be linked to the previous ownerโ€™s account, in this case after resetting (Settings) โ†’ On TV. โ†’ Resetting) the device will require entering the username/password of the old account, the solution to this problem is described in the section "How to delete someone else's accountยป.

How to Create a Mi Account for Xiaomi TV

If you donโ€™t already have a Xiaomi account, you can register it directly on your TV or via your smartphone/computer, the latter being more convenient, so you can save data for recovery (phone number or email).

Method 1: Registration through TV

  1. Turn on the TV and wait for the welcome window to appear (or go to Settings โ†’ Accounts and Security โ†’ Add an account).
  2. Choose Mi Account (or Xiaomi Account on new models).
  3. Click Create an account and fill out the fields: ๐Ÿ“ง Email or ๐Ÿ“ž Phone number (we recommend the phone - it is easier to restore access). ๐Ÿ” Password (minimum 8 characters, with capital letters and numbers). ๐ŸŒ Country/Region (select Russia or your country โ€“ this will affect the content available).

Confirm your registration via SMS or email (the code will arrive within 1-2 minutes).

Accept the terms of use and complete the setup.

Method 2: Registration via smartphone or PC

If you have a Xiaomi smartphone (or any Android phone), do this:

  1. Open the Mi Account app (or go to account.xiaomi.com).
  2. Click Register and select the method (phone/email).
  3. Fill in the data and confirm the account.
  4. Sign in to the same account on the TV (accounts and security menu).

Instructions for binding:

  1. Open Settings โ†’ Accounts and Security โ†’ Add an account.
