Are you tired of the endless wallpaper change on your Xiaomi lock screen? an annoying carousel with automatically changing pictures not only distracts, but also slows the unlocking of the device. This feature appeared in MIUI 12 and has since become a headache for many users - especially on Redmi Note 10/11 models, POCO X3/X4 and flagships of the Xiaomi 12/13 series.
The problem is that the manufacturer doesn't provide an obvious way to turn off this feature. There are no "remove" or "disable" buttons in the settings - instead, the system only suggests changing the frequency of the wallpaper or adding your images. But what if you want a static picture or a black screen? In this guide, we will discuss all working methods for removing the carousel, including hidden MIUI settings and root-free workarounds.
Important: Some methods require changing system files. If you are a beginner, start with the simplest options (sections 2-3) and then move on to the advanced ones (sections 4-6).
1. Method through standard MIUI settings (without root)
To start with, the obvious is to try to disable the carousel through the settings menu. Unfortunately, in the latest versions of MIUI 13/14, there is no direct uninstall option, but there is a workaround:
- Open the Settings โ Lock screen.
- Slip on the wallpaper of the lock screen (not to be confused with the wallpaper of the desktop!).
- At the bottom of the screen, select Static Wallpaper or My Wallpaper.
- Set one picture manually and confirm the choice.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some of the scalings (especially on the POCO F3/F4) This method only works until the first reboot, and after the reboot, the carousel can come back. If this is your case, move on to the next one.
There is another caveat: if less than 5 images are saved in the gallery, the system can automatically download wallpaper from Xiaomi Cloud.
- ๐ Move all the extra photos from the folder DCIM/Screenshots elsewhere
- ๐ Turn off sync with Mi Cloud in Settings โ Xiaomi account โ Mi Cloud โ gallery
- ๐ผ๏ธ Manually set a black background (you can download from the Internet)
2. Disconnection through "Developer Mode" (hidden settings)
If the standard method doesn't work, try activating hidden options, which is suitable for MIUI 12.5+ and doesn't require superuser rights:
- Activate Developer Mode: Go to Settings โ About Phone and tap the MIUI version 7 times.
- Return to the main settings menu and open a new section โ For developers.
- Find the USB debugging option and turn it on.
- Connect your phone to your PC and execute the command: adb shell settings put global lock_screen_wallpaper_enabled 0
Once you've done the command, restart the device, and the carousel should disappear, and instead, it will appear as a black screen or the last picture you have installed.
๐ก
If you donโt have ADB, download Minimal ADB and Fastboot from XDA Developers. It weighs only 2MB and doesnโt require installation.
๐น What to do if the team does not work?
- ๐ Try the alternative command: adb shell settings put secure lock_screen_wallpaper_enabled 0
- ๐ฑ Make sure that in the settings โ Lock screen selected Static wallpaper
- ๐ง Some firmware (HyperOS) requires first to disable wallpaper animation in the same developer settings
3. Remove via Mi Home/Theme Store (official workaround)
Few people know, but the wallpaper carousel is closely linked to the Mi Home app (even if you don't have one!) and works on 80 percent of devices:
- Open the Theme Store (Theme Store).
- Go to the Wallpaper section โ Lock screen.
- Choose any static topic (e.g., โBlack Coalโ or โMinimalismโ).
- Apply the theme and confirm the changes.
- Return to Settings โ Lock screen and manually set your picture.
๐น Why does it work? Applying a theme resets the carousel settings, and manually installing wallpaper then blocks automatic shifting.
List of verified static topics
โ ๏ธ Note: On some devices (Redmi) 9A/9C) post-update MIUI 13.0.4+ So, if you're going to try a combination, you can use the topic first, then you can execute the command. ADB from the previous section.
4. Radical method: resetting the lock screen settings
If all previous methods failed, you can try resetting the lock screen settings to factory settings, which will not delete your data, but will return all display settings to the post-purchase state:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Slip on the three points in the upper right corner and select Show System.
- Find the System UI app (or Lawnchair if you use a custom launcher).
- Select Warehouse. โ Clear the data.
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.
After the reboot:
- ๐ง Go to Settings. โ Lock screen
- ๐ผ๏ธ Manually install static wallpaper
- โ Turn off the Recommended Wallpaper option (if it appears)
โ ๏ธ Note: This method can be reset:
- ๐ฑ Location of icons on the desktop
- ๐จ Color scheme of the system
- ๐ Some sound settings
But it is guaranteed to remove the carousel on 99% of MIUI firmware.
5. Advanced method: editing system files (requires root)
If you have root rights, you can delete the carousel permanently by editing system files, a method that is suitable for power users:
- Install any root conductor (such as Root Explorer or FX File Explorer).
- Go to /system/priv-app/MiuiSystemUI/
- Find the file MiuiSystemUI.apk and make a backup copy of it.
- Open the file in APK Editor and find the line: com.android.keyguard.wallpaper
- Remove or comment on all mentions of WallpaperCarouselService.
- Save the changes, install the modified APK and restart the phone.
๐น Alternative method (simple):
- ๐ Move to the /data/system/users/0/
- ๐๏ธ Delete the file. wallpaper_info.xml
- ๐ Create a new empty file with the same name
- ๐ง Set the rights 644 (rw-r)--r--)
โ ๏ธ Warning: Incorrect editing of system files can lead to bootloop ( looped reboot:
- ๐ Charge your phone to at least 70%
- ๐พ Make a full backup through TWRP
- ๐ Write down all the steps โ if you make a mistake, you will need to restore the original APK
6. Alternative solutions: if nothing has worked
If all of these methods have not worked, consider these options:
| Method | Pluses | Cons | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation of custom firmware (Pixel Experience, LineageOS) | Complete removal of all MIUI features, including carousel | Complex installation, possible loss of warranty | POCO F1-F5, Redmi Note 8-12 |
| Use of alternative launcher (Nova, Lawnchair) | You can set your lock screen. | It doesnโt completely remove the carousel, it just masks it. | All models on MIUI 12+ |
| Reverse to the old version of MIUI | Version 11.0.3 and below do not have a carousel | Loss of new features, security issues | Xiaomi Mi 9/10, Redmi K20 |
| Installation of a patch through Magisk (Disable Miui Wallpaper Carousel module) | No need to edit system files | Need root rights and Magisk | All models with unlocked loader |
๐น The easiest workaround: Install black wallpaper in high resolution (4K). Against a dark background, the animation of the carousel will be almost invisible, and the battery will be consumed less.
Backup all data | Unlock bootloader | Download the correct firmware version for your model | Check compatibility with TWRP | Charge your phone to 100%-->
Frequent problems and their solutions
Even after the carousel is successfully removed, users face typical problems.
Problem 1: After the MIUI update, the carousel is back.
- ๐ Repeat the steps from Section 2 (team) ADB)
- ๐ต Turn off automatic theme updates in Settings โ Theme โ Settings โ Auto-update
Problem 2: Black lock screen without the ability to change wallpaper.
- ๐ผ๏ธ Install wallpaper through Google Wallpaper (app from Google)
- ๐ง Restore rights to /data/system/wallpaper_info.xml (hand-edited)
Problem 3: No method works on HyperOS.
- ๐ฅ Try to roll back on MIUI 14 via Mi Flash Tool
- ๐ง Use the Magisk HyperOS DeBloat module to disable unnecessary services
๐ก
On HyperOS devices (Xiaomi 14, Redmi K70), the wallpaper carousel is integrated deeper, and the only reliable way is to install custom firmware or use Magisk modules.
