Xiaomi smartphone owners often face the need to document a phone conversation, which can be important for working matters, confirming bank agreements, or preserving evidence in conflict situations, but standard system settings in the latest versions of MIUI and HyperOS often include automatic voice notification for all participants in the conversation that the recording is being made.
Making matters worse, the security policy of the Android operating system is getting stricter every year. Since Android 10 and up, Google has implemented strict restrictions on app access to the audio stream during a call. This is done to protect user privacy, but for many Xiaomi owners has become a serious obstacle. The standard mechanism, which used to work out of the box, now requires more deep intervention in settings or using specific software solutions.
In this article, we will explore how you can bypass voice alerts and configure automatic recording of incoming and outgoing calls. We will look at the built-in shell features that can be hidden, as well as effective third-party methods that allow you to achieve the desired result without obtaining root rights. It is important to understand that methods can vary depending on the firmware version and the region in which your device is “locked”.
Before you start setting up, it is worth mentioning the legal aspect.
⚠️ Note: Recording a conversation without warning may violate your country's laws. In some jurisdictions, using such recordings as evidence in court is prohibited unless the other party has given their consent.
Features of the regular voice recorder in MIUI and HyperOS
To start with, Xiaomi itself offers in its official firmware. In most regions (especially in the global versions of ROM), Google’s standard Phone app or Xiaomi’s own Dialer has a built-in recording feature. However, by default, it is often disabled or works with voice alerts. To check the available options, you need to open the call app and go to the settings menu.
The way that you usually go is, you tap three dots or a gear in the corner of the screen, then you pick Call Record. Here you'll see the Auto Record switch. If you activate this mode, the phone will write all the conversations. The problem is that 90% of the time, the system will say "Talk Recorded Started" in a loud voice, and this is implemented at the system library level, and you just don't turn it off with a slider.
If your smartphone is intended for sale in China, Indonesia or Russia (sometimes), the firmware may not have a voice warning or it can be disabled by ticking the Notice of Record. Global ROMs that ship to Europe and many other countries often cut or blocked due to GDPR and local privacy regulations.
For those who are unlucky with the region, there are two options: changing the region in the system settings (rarely and unstable) or installing third-party software. Trying to change the region to China through Settings → Additional settings → Region may temporarily remove the warning in some versions of MIUI, but this does not guarantee stable operation and may disrupt the functionality of other services.
Using third-party applications to circumvent restrictions
Because it is not always possible to solve the problem with regular means, specialized applications from Google Play come to the rescue. They use various methods of intercepting the audio stream: some try to use the standard Android API, others emulate the speakerphone and record sound through the microphone, others use special accessibility services (Accessibility Service).
One of the most popular and effective solutions is the Cube ACR app, which can record not only regular calls, but also conversations via messengers (Viber, WhatsApp, Telegram). Once installed, the app will request a number of permissions, including access to a microphone, phone and, critically, special access rights. Without all the permissions requested, recording can be conducted only on one side or not be conducted at all.
In Cube ACR settings, you need to find the Audio source partition, and experimentally (by going through the Default, Mic, Voice Communication variants) you need to find the one that gives both interlocutors a clear sound, often by enabling the Alternative Method mode in the application settings, which makes it work bypassing Android system constraints.
- 📱 Cube ACR — market leader, supports VoIP recording, requires careful configuration of sound sources.
- 🎙️ Call Recorder - SKVALEX — A paid but powerful root-mode solution for perfect quality.
- 📼 Automatic Call Recorder is a simple interface, good compatibility with older versions of Android, but may be inferior in new OS.
Importantly, on Android 11, 12, 13 and 14, third-party applications may be affected by system blockages, and in some cases, recording will be done but the voice of the interlocutor will be barely heard.
⚠️ Warning: When installing recorder apps from unknown sources, always check them for viruses and read the privacy policy as they access your personal conversations.
💡
If the app can’t enable autorecord, try activating “Compatibility Mode” or “Bypassing Android Restrictions” in its settings if such options are available.
Instructions for setting up recording via ADB (for advanced)
For users who are not afraid of the computer and the command line, there is a method of activating hidden functions through ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which allows you to insert a command into a system that forcibly includes a recording without alert, if this feature is physically present in the firmware code, but hidden by the interface.
First, activate Developer Mode. Go to Settings → About Phone and quickly click 7 times on either MIUI Version or OS Version. Then the Advanced Settings menu will see Developer Mode. Inside, you will find and activate USB Debugging.
☑️ Preparation for work with ADB
After connecting your smartphone to your computer and installing the Android platform tools, open the command line or terminal. Enter a command to check the connection:
adb devicesIf the device is determined, you can try to implement the settings through the shell. However, there is no universal command for all Xiaomi models, since registry keys can change.
adb shell am start -n com.miui.calculator/.cal/CalActivity(Note: This is an example of a command structure, the actual keys for a voice recorder can vary depending on the version of MIUI.)
A safer, but less effective method is to use hidden settings activator applications like Activity Launcher, which can find the hidden Activity of the Call Record system application and try to run it directly bypassing the main settings menu. Search the process list for com.android.phone or com.miui.callrecorder and look for sub-items related to the record.
Comparison of recording methods: efficiency table
To make it easier for you to choose the right way, we have prepared a comparison table that will help you assess the risks and results of each method in the context of modern Xiaomi smartphones.
| Method | Sound quality | Difficulty setting up | The risk of blocking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Staffing function (Global) | High. | Low. | Voice alert |
| Regional change (China) | High. | Medium | Unstable service performance |
| Annexes (Cube ACR) | Medium/Low | Tall. | Minimum |
| Speaker + Dictaphone | Low (echo) | Low. | No. |
As you can see from the table, there is no perfect solution that works anywhere, always with high quality and without notifications. The choice of method depends on your particular model and version of the software. For example, on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10, a change of region may work, but on the Xiaomi 13 Pro with Android 14, it is no longer possible.
💡
On newer versions of Android (13-14), the most stable way is to use specialized applications with access rights, as system loopholes are actively closed.
Problems with sound quality and their solution
A common complaint of users is that when you turn on the recording of the interlocutor, you can't hear it, or you can only record it on one side, because the microphone of the phone in talk mode is occupied by the noise reduction system and voice transmission, and the third-party application is blocked from accessing it, as a result, the application writes either silence or only your voice.
To solve this problem, some applications have a "Write through speaker" feature, and the phone automatically turns the conversation on speaker, which allows the microphone to pick up sound from the speaker, and the quality in this case suffers, there are echoes and extraneous noises, but at least the information about the words of the interlocutor is stored.
Another important factor is energy saving: MIUI aggressively kills background processes, so that the recorder application is stable, you need to:
- 🔋 In the battery settings, select No Limits mode for the recording application.
- 🔒 Lock the application in memory (lock in the menu of running applications).
- 🚫 Disable autostart for all unnecessary programs to free up resources.
If you use a headset or Bluetooth headphones, things can get complicated. Some Bluetooth codecs don't support both-way audio for recording, and in these cases, the only way out is to transfer the call to the phone speaker.
Legal and ethical aspects of hidden recording
The technical ability to record a conversation does not always mean legal security; data protection and privacy laws vary from country to country; some states (e.g., individual states) have a “one consent” rule (the consent of the person who writes is sufficient); others require the consent of all participants.
In the Russian Federation, according to Art. 138 of the Criminal Code, violation of the secrecy of telephone conversations is punishable, but judicial practice shows that recordings made by one of the participants in the conversation for their own needs (without distribution) are often recognized as admissible evidence if they were not obtained using special equipment.
⚠️ Note: Publication of a recording of a conversation in the public domain (social networks, YouTube) without the consent of the interlocutor is almost always illegal and can lead to civil claims for compensation for moral damage.
Use the record function responsibly: Save files in a secure folder or cloud storage with a password to prevent third parties from accessing your personal information in the event of a device loss.
