Why Xiaomi canโt change the keyboard language?
Xiaomi smartphone owners (including the Redmi, POCO and Black Shark line) often face a problem: the keyboard language either doesnโt change at all or resets after a reboot, due to the features of the MIUI shell, which actively caches input settings and sometimes conflicts with system languages.
In 80% of cases, the problem lies in one of three factors: an incorrect system layout, a conflict of third-party keyboards (for example, Gboard or SwiftKey) or a failure in the MIUI settings. In newer versions of the shell (MIUI 14+), the language change algorithm has changed dramatically โ it is now tied to the user profile, not to the global settings of the device.
In this article, we will analyze all the current ways to change the keyboard language to Xiaomi in 2026, including hidden settings for models with HyperOS, as well as solve typical errors such as the disappearance of the Russian language or automatic switch to English.
Method 1: Standard language change via MIUI settings
This is the basic method that works on 95% of Xiaomi devices with a MIUI 12-14 shell. Suitable for Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T and other models that do not have third-party keyboards installed.
Algorithm of action:
- Open Settings โ Additional settings โ Language and input.
- Slip on the item Current Keyboard (in some versions - Keyboard Management).
- Select the Input Languages โ Click Add Language.
- Scroll through the list and mark the languages you need (e.g. Russian, English (USA)).
- Return to the input field and hold the space โ a language switching panel will appear.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If the language doesn't change after this, check if Google's Gboard is installed as the primary keyboard. MIUI will not apply โ you need to change the language directly in Gboard (see Method 3).
Check the version of MIUI in Settings โ About the phone
Make sure the internet is connected (you need to download language packs)
Close all applications that use the keyboard (messengers, browser)
Disable VPN (can block language loading)

Method 2: Quickly switching languages with gestures
MIUI 13+ has a hidden gesture switching feature that saves time, which only works on a standard Xiaomi keyboard and requires pre-configuration.
How to turn on:
- Open any input field (for example, in Messages).
- Slip the pin on the pin on the keyboard โ Keyboard settings.
- Go to Languages and Mockups โ Switching languages.
- Activate the swipe option on the space.
Now, to change the language, just swipe left or right on the space key, which is especially useful for the Redmi Note 11 and POCO F4, where there is no physical keyboard.

Method 3: Configure the language in Gboard (Google Keyboard)
If you use Gboard instead of the standard Xiaomi keyboard, the language change algorithm will be different, the main difference is that the languages are added directly to the Google Keyboard app, not to the system settings.
Instructions:
- ๐ฑ Open any input field and tap the "G" icon on the keyboard.
- ๐ Select Settings โ Input languages.
- โ Click Add keyboard and select the languages you want (e.g. Russian โ QWERTY).
- ๐ To switch between languages, hold a space or swipe it left/right (if the gesture is enabled).
โ ๏ธ Attention: There is a bug in Gboard that can make the Russian layout disappear after the app update. To avoid this, turn off the automatic update of Gboard in the Play Store. โ My apps. โ Google Keyboard โ โฎ โ Turn off auto-update.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Language resets after rebooting | Conflict between MIUI and Gboard | Install Gboard as the default keyboard in Settings โ Language and input |
| No Russian language on the list | The phone region is not set to Russia/Ukraine/Belarus | Change region to Settings โ Additional โ Language and region |
| The keyboard flashes when switching | Cache failure MIUI | Clear the cache in Settings โ Applications โ Keyboard โ Memory |
| The swipe is not working on the gap | Disabled gesture in the settings of Gboard | Include in Gboard โ Settings โ Gestures โ Swipe by space |
Method 4: Change language through Safe Mode (if the keyboard breaks)
If, after updating MIUI or installing a new application, the keyboard has stopped responding to the language change (or disappeared altogether), try Safe Mode, which disables all third-party programs, allowing you to diagnose the problem.
How to start Safe Mode:
- Press the power button before the off menu appears.
- Hold your finger on the item โSwitch offโ โ a suggestion will appear to go to safe mode.
- Confirm the action and wait for the reboot (the screen will be labeled Safe Mode).
In safe mode:
- ๐ง Check if the language change on the standard keyboard works MIUI.
- ๐๏ธ If yes, it's a problem in a third-party application.
- ๐ If not, reset your keyboard settings in Settings. โ Annexes โ keyboard โ Reset.
๐ก
If the keyboard is working normally in Safe Mode, but the problem returns after it is left, one of the apps is to blame. To find the culprit, delete the programs consistently starting with the last ones installed, and check the keyboard after each deletion.
Method 5: Manual addition of a language pack (for rare languages)
Some Xiaomi models (such as the Redmi 10C or POCO M4 Pro) may not have the right language option on the list of available languages, such as Ukrainian, Kazakh or Belarusian, due to regional firmware restrictions.
To add the missing language:
- Download. APK-Language package file for your model from APKMirror (search on request) MIUI Language Pack).
- Install the file through any file manager (allow installation from unknown sources in Settings โ Privacy).
- Restart your phone and check the list of languages in Settings โ Language and Enter.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Installing unofficial language packs may cause updates to fail MIUI. Before the procedure, create a backup copy in Settings โ The phone. โ Backup.
๐ก
If the keyboard starts to slow down after installing the language pack, clear the Settings app cache โ Apps โ Keyboard โ Memory โ Clear the cache. This eliminates conflicts between system and user languages.
Addressing common mistakes
Even after you set up the keyboard language correctly, these are the typical failures and their solutions:
1.The keyboard automatically switches to English
Reason: MIUI 14+ has a language autodefinition function that analyzes the text you're typing and Forced switches layout to turn off:

- ๐ Install a region of Russia (or another country with the desired language).
- ๐ Reboot your phone and re-add your tongue to the keyboard.
