The incoming call screen is the first thing you see when you call, but not all Xiaomi Redmi users know that it can be completely transformed. MIUI offers a boring standard interface with white background and minimalist animation, but under the hood of the system hidden dozens of customization options β from changing the wallpaper to installing third-party themes with effects 3D-depth.
In this article, we will discuss all the available ways to change the call screen on the Redmi Note 10/11/12, Redmi 9/10 and other models running MIUI 12-14.
- π¨ Set a custom background from a gallery or standard wallpaper MIUI
- π Change the call theme through built-in settings and third-party launchers
- βοΈ Set up animation and transparency for the floating interface effect
- π± Bring back the old screen style (for those who donβt like the redesign) MIUI 14)
- π Bypass the restrictions on some firmware (for example, on the global version of the Redmi Note 8 Pro)
Important: customization options depend on the MIUI version and regional firmware. For example, on the Chinese versions of Xiaomi, more are available than on the global ones. If your smartphone does not support some way, check the relevance of the firmware in Settings β About Phone β System Update.
1. Standard change of the call background through MIUI settings
The easiest way to change the look of the call screen is to use built-in MIUI tools. This method works on all Redmi models with firmware version 12.0.3.0 and later, including the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ and Redmi 10 2022.
To change the background:
- Open the Phone app (the tube icon on the home screen).
- Slip on the three dots in the upper right corner and select Settings.
- Go to the Call Screen section (some firmware may call Calling).
- Select the Call Background and click Add Background.
- The system will offer options: πΌοΈ Gallery - upload your image π Wallpaper. MIUI β standard-background π Themes β pre-installed styles (not available on all firmware)
If the Call Screen option is not on the menu, your version of MIUI does not support it, in which case try updating the firmware or using alternative methods from the following sections.
π‘
To prevent the background from stretching or cropping, use images with a resolution of 1080Γ2400 (for most Redmi with a cutout under the camera).
2. Installation of themes from MIUI Themes (including animations)
Official Annex Topic (MIUI Themes) offers hundreds of free and paid themes that change not only the wallpaper but also the design of the call screen:
- π Animation when an incoming call (for example, falling petals or bubbles)
- π΅ Dynamic melodies synchronized with vibration
- π₯οΈ Transparent interface elements (the glass effect")
- π΄ Custom buttons (respond/reject) with non-standard location
How to set the theme for the call screen:
- Open the Themes app (icon with brush).
- In the search bar, enter a request: call screen or call screen (in English layout).
- Select your favorite theme and click Apply.
- Confirm the change in the pop-up window (some topics require a reboot).
| Type of topic | Example of a title | Features | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimalism | Pure Call, Minimalist UI | Black background, thin fonts, lack of animation | All Redmi models |
| 3D-effects | Depth Call, Glass Morphism | Transparency, background blur, three-dimensional buttons | MIUI 13+ requires Android 11+ |
| Anime/Games | Genshin Impact Call, Demon Slayer | Thematic wallpaper and sounds, stylized buttons | Can brake on weak models (Redmi 8A) |
| Classic. | Retro Phone, Old School | Imitation of button phones (Nokia, Sony Ericsson) | All versions of MIUI |
Important: After installing the theme, check the approximation sensor β some custom styles can block the automatic screen shutdown when holding the phone to the ear.

Hidden MIUI settings: transparency and scale
MIUI 13 and later featured hidden options that allow you to fine-tune the display of the call screen, which are undocumented, but work on most Redmi models (except the most budget ones, such as the Redmi A1).
How to enable additional settings:
- Open the Phone app.
- Dial the code ##4636## (test menu opens).
- Go to the Usage statistics tab.
- Go back and open your phone settings again β Call screen.
- Now there should be new items: background transparency (adjustment from 0% to 100%) Button size (increase / decrease elements) Backlight color (change in color of the edge when ringing)
These settings allow, for example, to make the call screen translucent to see the desktop wallpaper through the interface, or to increase the buttons for convenience on large screens (Redmi Note 12 Pro+).

4. Use of third-party launchers (Nova, Apex, Hyperion)
If the built-in MIUI capabilities aren't enough, you can resort to third-party launchers that support call screen customization. The best options for Xiaomi Redmi are:

- β It works on any firmware, including custom (LineageOS, Pixel Experience).
- β Compatible with Redmi on Android 10+.
Disadvantages:

- β On some models (Redmi) 9C) Possible delays when displaying the call screen.

The launcher side is the only way to get a fully customized call screen on Xiaomi Redmi with global firmware where built-in settings are limited.
5. Manual editing of system files (for advanced)
If youβre willing to take a risk and have experience with ADB or root access, you can manually replace the system files that are responsible for the call screen, a method that is suitable for Redmi models with an unlocked bootloader.
Warning: Incorrect actions can cause system failure, and we recommend you to make a full backup through TWRP before starting.
Steps to replace the call background:
- Connect your phone to your PC and activate USB Debugging in Settings β About Phone β MIUI version (tap 7 times on the build number, then return to Additional β For Developers).
- Download ADB Tools and unpack it on PC.
- In the command line, execute: adb pull /system/priv-app/Contacts/Contacts.apk This will copy the system application "Contacts" to your computer.
- Open Contacts.apk in the archiver (e.g. 7-Zip) and go to the res/drawable folder.
- Replace the files incall_bg.jpg or incall_background.xml Your name (observe the original name and permission!).
- Collect the archive back and run through ADB: adb push Contacts.apk /system/priv-app/Contacts/ adb shell chmod 644 /system/priv-app/Contacts/Contacts.apk adb reboot
For Redmi models on MIUI 14, the path may be different: instead of Contacts.apk, look for Dialer.apk or PhoneServices.apk.
β οΈ Note: On firmware with DM-Verity (e.g. global Redmi Note 11) after manual editing of system files, the phone may stop booting.
6. Alternative Calling Applications
If you don't like the standard MIUI dialer, you can install a third-party call app that will completely replace the call screen. The best options for Xiaomi Redmi are:
| Annex | Features | Cons | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Truecaller | Definition of spam, custom melodies, dark topic | Collects contact data, advertising | Google Play |
| Google Phone | Minimalist design, integration with Google services | No deep customization, may not work on Chinese firmware | Google Play |
| ExDialer | Topics, T9-search, widgets | Outdated interface, no Russian language | Google Play |
| Simple Dialer | No advertising, open source | Minimalist settings, no animations | Google Play |
To make a third-party dialer the default application:
- Install the selected application from Google Play.
- Go to Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Slip on three dots in the corner and select the Default Apps.
- Press the phone and select the dialer installed.
β οΈ Note: Some Redmi models (e.g. Redmi) K50i) system-dialer MIUI You can't completely turn it off. In this case, when an incoming call comes in, it can show up as a standard screen, and the outgoing calls will go through a third-party application.
