How to Add a New Language to Xiaomi Keyboard: All Ways and Solutions to Problems

Adding a new language to Xiaomi’s keyboard is a challenge that every second user faces after buying a smartphone or moving to another country. Even if you’ve been using MIUI devices for a long time, the customization algorithm may vary depending on the firmware version, phone model (Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T) or the keyboard installed. In this article, we’ll look at all the current ways to add languages – from the standard MIUI keyboard to popular alternatives like Gboard and SwiftKey, and solve typical problems: why the language does not appear, how to return the Russian to the auto-reset.

Xiaomi is very specific about how it updates MIUI often, and the way it works can change. For example, in MIUI 14, the keyboard menus were moved from Language and Input to Additional, and in MIUI 15 they were returned back with a different design, and we took all these nuances into account and prepared general instructions that will be suitable for most models released after 2020. If your smartphone is older (for example, Redmi 8 or Mi 9), some menu items may look different, we will mention this too.

Importantly, if you use a third-party keyboard (not MIUI), the algorithm for adding the language will be different, for example, in Google's Gboard, language settings are hidden in a different menu, and in Microsoft's SwiftKey, in a third one, we'll go through each option in detail so you can choose the one that works best for you.

1. How to add language to a standard MIUI keyboard

The standard MIUI keyboard is installed on all Xiaomi smartphones by default, and it supports more than 100 languages, including regional variants (e.g. Russian for Ukraine or Kazakhstan, English for the UK or the US).

1. Open the settings (cog icon on the desktop).
2. Go to Additional → Language and Input (in MIUI 15) or System → Language and Input (in MIUI 14).
3. Slip on the current keyboard (or keyboard management in older versions).
4. Select the MIUI Keyboard (if it is not active, switch it on with a switch).
5. Click Languages and mark the necessary ones in the list (for example, Russian, English (USA), Ukrainian).
6. To save the changes, press Ready or go back.

After adding the languages will automatically switch when you type in the text – just swipe the space to the left or right (depending on the setting). If this gesture does not work, check the gesture settings in the same language and input section.

1. Install Gboard from Google Play if it is not already installed.
2. Activate keyboard: Settings → System → Language and input → Current keyboard → Gboard.
3. Open any field to enter text (such as notes or a message), call the keyboard and tap the icon. ⚙️ (gear) in the top panel.
4. Select Languages → Add keyboard and mark the desired languages (e.g. German, French, Chinese).
5. For quick switching between languages, swipe your finger over the space or click on the icon 🌐 keyboard.

Gboard has a unique multilingual input feature that allows you to type in multiple languages simultaneously without manual switching.

1. Go to the Gboard settings (image) ⚙️ keyboard).

3. Activate the switch and select a combination of languages (e.g. Russian + English).

SwiftKey's feature is that you can customize your vocabulary for each language, which is useful if you're using professional terminology or slang, to add words:

1. Open the SwiftKey settings.
2. Go to the dictionary. → Personal dictionary.
3. Choose a language and add new words or phrases.

Other alternative keyboards (e.g. Fleksy, Chroom) are set up in a similar way, and the key is to make sure the keyboard is enabled in the system settings and is current by default.

If you travel frequently, add languages to Gboard or SwiftKey in advance – this will save time and traffic, as language packs will be downloaded via Wi-Fi, not mobile internet.

4. Problem Solving: Language is not added or displayed

Sometimes users find that the language is added but does not appear in the switch list or the keyboard "forgets" the settings after the reboot.

If the problem persists, try resetting the keyboard settings:

1. Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
2. Find your keyboard (MIUI keyboard, Gboard, etc.).
3. Press Warehouse. → Clear the data.

5. How to set up auto-switching languages and auto-replacement

One of the most useful features of modern keyboards is that it automatically switches languages depending on the context, for example, if you type a message in Russian but type in an English word (like a smartphone), the keyboard can switch itself to configure this into MIUI:

1. Open Settings → Additional → Language and input → MIUI Keyboard → Keyboard settings.
2. Select Auto-Switching Languages and activate the Switch.
3. In the list, note the languages between which automatic switching should occur (for example, Russian). ↔ English).

In Gboard, this function is called “Adaptive Input”** and is enabled as follows:

To set up auto-replacement (typo correction):

⚠️ Warning: If autoswitching is not working properly (e.g. switching to English in the middle of a Russian word), turn it off and use manual swipe swipe over the space. Also check if extra languages are added to the list - this can knock the algorithm down.

6. Features for different Xiaomi models

Depending on the Xiaomi model and the MIUI version, the process of adding languages can be nuanced.

For models with global firmware (such as Xiaomi 12T Global), the list of supported languages may differ from the Chinese version. If you want a rare language (such as Hungarian or Finnish), you should use Gboard.

Nana POCO-devices (e.g., devices, POCO X3 Pro) the standard keyboard is sometimes disabled MIUI — Gboard is installed instead by default, in which case the addition of languages occurs through the Gboard settings, as described in section 2.

On smartphones with MIUI China (CN-version) may not be Russian in the standard keyboard. Solution: install Gboard or run the global version MIUI.
