Why you need a Russian layout on Xiaomi and what problems can arise
Xiaomiโs MIUI-enabled smartphones support dozens of languages, but users sometimes face a lack of Russian keyboard layout, which is true for devices purchased abroad (e.g. global versions for Europe or Asia) or after resetting. Without Russian layout, typing, searching the Internet and communicating in instant messengers become an agonizing experience โ you have to switch to the broadcast or copy characters from the clipboard.
In this article, we will discuss three official ways to add Russian: through keyboard settings, installing an alternative keyboard (such as Gboard), and manually adding a language package. You will also learn why the language can disappear after a MIUI update and how to fix it without resetting the phone to factory settings.
Method 1: Adding Russian through the standard MIUI keyboard
If your Xiaomi has a branded keyboard installed (usually called the Xiaomi Keyboard or Mi Keyboard), follow these steps:
- Open any field to enter text (such as in messages or browser) to make the keyboard appear.
- Press the gear icon (โ๏ธ) tertiary (โฎ) top-right corner of the keyboard.
- Select Languages and Enter or Keyboard Settings.
- Tap on Language Management โ Add languages.
- In the list, find Russian (Russia) or Russian (Ukraine/Belarus) and tick the tick.
- Return to the keyboard and hold the space โ the menu of switching languages will appear.
If Russian is not on the list, then the language pack is not installed in the system. In this case, move to Method 2.
The field for entering text is active (keyboard is visible on the screen)
The standard MIUI keyboard (not Gboard/SwiftKey) is used.

โ ๏ธ Note: On some models (e.g, POCO F5) After adding Russian, auto-replacement may be lost. To fix this, go to the keyboard settings. โ Text input โ Resetting settings.
Table: Supported layouts in MIUI
| Keyboard model | Russian layout | Auto-replacement | Voice input |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi keyboard (standard) | โ Yes. | โ Yeah (tuning in) | โ Yes. |
| Gboard (Google) | โ Yes. | โ Yeah (better than in) MIUI) | โ Yes. |
| SwiftKey (Microsoft) | โ Yes. | โ Yes (vocabulary training) | โ No. |
| Fleksy | โ Yes (requires manual loading) | โ No. | โ No. |
Method 2: Install an alternative keyboard (Gboard)
If Xiaomiโs standard keyboard doesnโt offer Russian, the best solution is to install Googleโs Gboard, which supports all languages, including regional Russian (Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan), and offers the best auto-replacement.
Instructions:
- ๐ฑ Open the Play Store and find the Gboard app (developer โ Google) LLC).
- ๐ฝ Set it up and run it.
- ๐ง Go to Settings. โ System system โ Language and input โ Virtual keyboard.
- ๐ Turn on Gboard and make it the default keyboard.
- ๐ In Gboard settings, select Languages โ Add a keyboard โ Russian.
The advantages of Gboard:
- ๐ฏ Precise auto-replacement and word prediction (including slang and memes).
- ๐จ Themes and appearance settings (you can make the keyboard transparent or with a picture).
- ๐ Built-in Google Search and Translate directly from the keyboard.
- ๐ผ๏ธ Gesture support (such as swipe for word input).

โ ๏ธ Note: On some firmware (for example, MIUI China ROM) Play Store can be blocked. In this case, download APK-Gboard file from the official website apk.gboard.com and install manually, allowing installation from unknown sources in Settings โ Annexes โ Special access.

If the Russian layout doesn't appear after installing the Gboard, restart the phone. Sometimes the system doesn't apply the changes without restarting.
Method 3: Manual installation of the MIUI language package
If the first two didn't work, the reason could be that there's no language pack in the firmware itself, which is true for devices with China ROM or custom firmware, and you'll have to install the package manually.
Steps:
- Download the archive with the language package for your version of MIUI from the Xiaomi.eu forum or 4PDA. Look for topics like [MIUI 14] Language Pack for Global/China ROM.
- Unpack the archive and find a file with the.apk extension (for example, miui_language_pack_ru.apk).
- Install. APK-file on the phone, allowing installation from unknown sources.
- Reset the device.
- After the reboot, repeat Method 1 โ Russian should appear in the list.
If you are not sure about the MIUI version, check it in Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI version. For example, MIUI 14.0.5 will work for MIUI 14, but not MIUI 13.
What to do if the language pack is not installed?
Comparison of ways to add Russian language
| Method | Difficulty | Internet is required | It works for China ROM. | No reset needed. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard MIUI keyboard | โญ (simple) | โ No. | โ No. | โ Yes. |
| Installation of the Gboard | โญโญ (middle-of-the-road) | โ Yes. | โ Yes. | โ Yes. |
| Manual language bag | โญโญโญ (difficult) | โ Yes (for downloading) | โ Yes. | โ Yes. |
Why Russian language disappears after MIUI update
Many users complain that after updating the firmware, Russian disappears from the keyboard, which is due to the fact that MIUI resets some of the language pack settings in major updates (for example, from MIUI 13 to MIUI 14).
- ๐ฅ The update was interrupted (for example, the battery was down).
- ๐ Installed beta version of firmware with bugs.
- ๐ฆ Language Package Conflicts with New Version MIUI.
Decisions:
- Reinstall the keyboard: Remove updates to the Xiaomi Keyboard in Settings โ Apps and update it again through the Play Store.
- Reset your keyboard settings: Go to Settings โ System โ Language and input โ Virtual Keyboard โ Reset settings.
- Reverse to the old version of MIUI (if you have recently upgraded): Use Fastboot or Recovery, but keep in mind that this will result in data loss.

If the problem occurs after the update, try resetting the keyboard first, which helps 80% of the time.
Solving Common Mistakes When Adding Russian
Even after the correct setup, the Russian layout may not work properly. Here are the most common errors and their solutions:
1.The keyboard switches by itself
If the language changes without you, the auto-switching settings fail.
- Open the keyboard settings (Settings โ System โ Language and input).
- Turn off the option Automatic language switching or Adaptive input.
- Remove unnecessary languages from the list, leaving only Russian and English.
2.No Russian in voice input
Voice input in Russian is available only in Gboard and standard MIUI keyboard for global firmware.
- Make sure that in Settings โ Additional โ Voice input is selected Russian language.
- Update Google Play services (go to Play Store โ My Apps โ Update Everything).
- Reinstall Gboard.
3. Symbols are displayed incorrectly (krakozyabr)
It's because of the encoding conflict.
- Check what in Settings โ Additional โ Encoding is selected by Unicode (UTF-8).
- If the problem is only in one application (for example, in Telegram), clear its cache in Settings โ Applications.
- Set the font with Cyrillic support: Settings โ Screen โ Font.
