How to add a Google account on a Xiaomi smartphone: all ways and solutions to errors

Adding a Google account to Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphones is a must-have for the device to be fully used, and without it, you can’t download apps from the Play Market, sync contacts, photos, or use services like Gmail and Google Drive. However, owners of devices with MIUI firmware often face nuances ranging from the lack of an explicit add-in button to errors like “failed to log in to Google account.”

In this article, we’ll look at all the current ways to link a Google account to Xiaomi, from the standard method through settings to circumventing the restrictions of MIUI for Chinese firmware, and how to fix common bugs, why the system can block logins, and what to do if your account is not automatically restored after a phone reset. The instructions are suitable for all modern models, from Xiaomi 14 Ultra to the budget Redmi Note 12 and POCO X5.

Why can’t you add a Google account to Xiaomi?

The problem with adding a Google account to Xiaomi is usually due to one of three reasons:

• 📱 Chinese firmware MIUI — In the domestic Chinese versions, Google services are removed by default (manual installation of Google Play Services is required).
• 🔒 Lock after reset – if the phone was reset via Mi Account, the system can request an old Xiaomi account before adding a new Google.

Another common reason is an outdated version of Google Play Services, where if the app hasn't been updated for a long time, the system will give an error "failed to establish a reliable connection to the server", in which case it will help to clear the cache or reinstall services through APKMirror.
