Users of Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones often face the need to quickly capture information on the display, whether it is correspondence, an article or a game moment. The standard procedure can differ from the usual scheme on other devices, especially if you have switched from iOS or button phones. Understanding all the available methods saves time and uses more advanced features, such as long scrolling.
Modern MIUI and HyperOS shells offer many options for doing this, from classic buttons to smart gestures. Some may not be obvious to beginners, as not all options are activated by default. In this article, we will discuss each method in detail so that you can choose the most convenient use case.
Special attention should be paid to system settings that allow you to automate the process or change the behavior of volume buttons. On new models of Redmi with Android 11 and above, image processing algorithms allow you to create screenshots weighing up to 3 times smaller than the original without loss of quality.
Classical method using physical buttons
The most common and reliable method that works on all firmware versions, including older models like the Redmi Note 9 or Redmi 9A. To implement it, you need to press and briefly hold two buttons at the same time: reduce volume and lock the screen, you need to hold them for about one second until you hear the characteristic click of the camera shutter or vibration.
If you press the buttons too hard or hold them for a long time, the smartphone can perceive this as a command to call the emergency call menu or voice assistant. So it is important to keep the rhythm: a confident but short press. On devices with a side fingerprint scanner built into the on button, this method works faultlessly, since the button mechanics do not conflict with the sensor.
Once you've successfully created a picture, you'll have a thumbnail in the top right corner of the screen. tapping opens it with an editor where you can immediately mark up or crop the image. If you don't touch the thumbnail, it'll disappear in a few seconds, and the file will automatically be saved to the gallery.
- 📸 Press both “Loudness –” and “Nutrition” at the same time».
- ⏱ Hold the buttons for less than one second.
- 🖼 Check the appearance of the thumbnail in the corner of the screen.
- 📂 Find the file in the Screenshot folder in the Gallery.
It’s worth noting that on some versions, such as the Redmi Note 10 Pro, the location of the buttons can be ergonomically shifted, which requires addiction. If you have thumbs or use your phone with one hand, this method may seem inconvenient, and then you should pay attention to alternative control options.
Use of the notification panel and the “More” menu
For those who prefer software management, MIUI offers a built-in button in the notification curtain, which is ideal when physical buttons are busy or damaged, and to use it, you need to swipe from top to bottom to open the control center, where among the labels is an icon with a picture of scissors.
If you don't see this icon right away, it's probably hidden in the second page of the Quick Settings menu, and you have to click on the edit button to activate it (usually a pencil icon or a tripod) and drag the Screenshot icon to the main panel, and then you have to make copies of the screen a matter of touch.
⚠️ Note: On some custom themes, the icon can be hidden or replaced. If you can't find it even in the editor, try returning the standard theme to the personalization settings.
The advantage of this method is the ability to take screenshots on a locked screen, if the appropriate option is enabled in the security settings, and it is also convenient when using the phone in horizontal mode, when reaching for the buttons is physically uncomfortable.
Gesture control: three fingers and swipes
One of the most convenient features of the shell from Xiaomi is to create screenshots with gestures. By default, this option is often disabled, so it must be activated manually. The path to settings is in the Settings menu → Additional features → Screenshot. Here you need to switch the switch to the "Three-finger Screenshot" to the active position.
Once activated, just swipe three fingers down the screen at any time while you're using the interface, and the system instantly responds with an audible signal and saves the image, a technique that's especially popular among users who often take screenshots in games or when watching videos where access to side buttons is limited.
There is also a variation of this gesture to call the edit menu, but it doesn't work on all versions of Android. If a standard swipe doesn't work, check if it conflicts with other assigned gestures, such as the split-screen function, in which case another action may be given priority.
☑️ Checking the gesture settings
If you use hardened glass, the system may not always recognize the touch of three fingers the first time, in such cases, it is recommended to slightly increase the speed of the fingers.
Long Screenshot feature: Scrolling screenshot
When you want to capture a long article, a messaging app, or a web page, a simple screenshot is not enough. Long Screenshot allows you to stitch multiple screens into one long image. After you create a regular screenshot (by any method), a thumbnail with a scroll button appears in the corner.
By clicking on the down arrow button or scroll icon, you trigger automatic scrolling. The smartphone will scroll through the content itself and glue the frames. The process will stop when you touch the screen, reach the end of the page, or the system detects repetitive content.
| Parameter | Description | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Max. Length. | Up to 100 screens | Depends on memory. |
| Format | PNG / JPG | Automatic choice |
| Editing | Available immediately. | Only after completion |
| Annexes | Browsers, Chats | Doesn't work in some games |
The quality of the final image when using a long screenshot can be slightly reduced due to compression, especially if the original content contained a lot of small text.
