Why Google Assistant is on Xiaomi and how to stop it once and for all

Have you noticed that Google Assistant on your Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO suddenly activates without a command?Voice Assistant can be triggered by accidentally touching the screen, pressing buttons or even while talking - and it's annoying.The problem is typical of devices on MIUI (especially versions 12-14), where integration with Google services sometimes works too "hard."

In this article, we will discuss all the possible causes of the Assistant’s spontaneous activation and how to fix them, from basic settings to hidden developer parameters, and what to do if standard methods do not help, and how to completely remove Google Assistant from Xiaomi without root rights (yes, it is possible!).

Why Google Assistant is on its own: 5 main reasons

Before you turn off the feature, it is important to understand what exactly provokes it. On Xiaomi smartphones, the blame usually becomes:

• 🔍 Random voice command activation – Phrases like “OK, Google” or “Hey, Google” can be recognized even in the background if the microphone is turned on.
• 📱 The "Swipe from the Corner" gesture - in MIUI by default, swipe diagonally from the bottom corner to call the Assistant.
• 🔊 Pressing the Home button on some models (POCO F3, Redmi Note 10 Pro Holding the Home button triggers the assistant.
• 🤖 Automatic Google Updates – After Updating the Google or Google Play Services App, Settings Can Be Reset.
• 🛠️ Conflict with the shell MIUI — In firmware based on Android 11-13 sometimes triggered bug with the background launch services.

Interestingly, on devices with HyperOS (the new shell of Xiaomi), the problem is less common – developers have optimized interaction with Google services, but owners of Redmi 9, POCO X3 or Mi 10T face auto-run more often due to the features of the older version of MIUI.

Method 1: Disabling voice activation (OK, Google)

The most obvious reason is voice recognition, and even if you don't say the key phrase, the Assistant can respond to similar sounds (like in a song or conversation) to correct this:

1. Open the Google app (the icon with the letter “G” on a color background).
2. Slip on the profile avatar in the upper right corner → Settings → Voice search.
3. Select the Voice Assistant → Okay Google.
4. Turn off the sliders: 🔴 With lock screen (if enabled) 🔴 In any application 🔴 When locking the device

After that, the Assistant won't respond to voice commands, but keep in mind that if you have Google Discover installed on the home screen, some of the features may remain active, so move on to the next way.

If the Assistant still works after Google turns off, check the settings of Google Play Services, which sometimes override the basic settings.

Method 2: Remove the gesture of calling the Assistant in MIUI

MIUI has a default gesture for a quick Google Assistant swipe from the bottom corner, which is easily triggered by accident, especially on large screens (POCO F4 GT, Xiaomi 12 Pro).

• 📲 Go to Settings. → Additional settings → Gestures.
• 🔍 Find Google Assistant (or Call Assistant in older versions) MIUI).
• 🚫 Turn off the slider next to the gesture.

On some devices (Redmi Note 8 Pro, Mi 9T), this item may be in Settings → System → Gestures. If you do not find it, use the settings search (the magnifier icon at the top).

Method 3: Customize buttons and disable Home retention

On Xiaomi smartphones with a physical or touch-sensitive Home button (e.g. Redmi 5 Plus, Mi A2), the Assistant can trigger this button to disable:

1. Open Settings → Buttons and gestures (or Settings → System → Gestures).
2. Choose Full-screen gestures or button settings (depending on the MIUI version).
3. Find Hold the Home button and set the Do Nothing or Disabled value.

If you have POCO with the Google Assistant button in the notification curtain (such as POCO X3 NFC), you can also remove it:

• 📱 Swipe down to open the notification panel.
• 🔧 Put the badge on. ⚙️ («Edit»).
• 🗑️ Find the Google Assistant button and drag it to the Unused section».

Turning off the Home button holding does not affect the touch gestures, and you can still use swipes to navigate.

Method 4: Disable Assistant via Google Settings (radical method)

If the previous methods didn’t work, you can completely deactivate Google Assistant in your account settings, and this won’t delete the app, but will stop it from working in the background:

1. Open the Google app → click on the profile avatar → Settings.
2. Go to Google Assistant → General.
3. Scroll down and select an Assistant. → Phone.
4. Turn off the Google Assistant slider.

After that, the assistant will stop responding to any commands, but some features (such as voice search in Google Search) may remain active.

Method 5: Remove Google Assistant without root (for advanced)

If you want to get rid of Google Assistant completely, but are not ready to get root rights, there is a workaround through ADB (Android Debug Bridge), which works for all Xiaomi with MIUI/HyperOS and does not require unlocking the bootloader.

⚠️ Attention: Wrong commands ADB They may disrupt the system. Follow the instructions exactly!

1. Turn on USB debugging: Go to Settings → About Phone. Tap 7 times on MIUI Version to activate Developer Mode. Go back to Settings → Additional → For Developers and turn on USB Debugging.

Connect your phone to your PC

Open the command line.

adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox

This command removes the Assistant only for the current user, without affecting system files.

Once you have completed the command, restart your phone. The assistant will disappear from the system, but the Google app will remain (without assistant functions). To return everything back, you just need to update Google Play Services or type in the command:

adb shell cmd package install-existing com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox

If voice notes or reminders have stopped working after removing the Assistant, install an alternative - Bixby (for Samsung) or Alice from Yandex.

What do you do if nothing helps?

If you have tried all the methods, but the Assistant still turns on, check:

• 📦 Updates MIUI — Sometimes bugs get fixed in newer versions of firmware. → The phone. → Updating the system.
• 🔄 Conflict with other apps – some launchers (like Nova Launcher) or voice assistants (Alice, Siri) may interfere with your work.
• 🛠️ Resetting – in extreme cases, return Google settings to factory: Open Settings → Annexes → App management. Go to Google. → Warehouse → Clear the data.
