You try to change the layout, add emoji or adjust auto-replacement on your Xiaomi, but can’t find where the keyboard options are hiding? This problem is familiar to many owners of smartphones with a MIUI shell — the interface is often updated, and the settings move from place to place. Depending on the model (Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Xiaomi 13T) and the firmware version, the path to the keyboard may differ, and sometimes even require additional software installation.
In this article, we’ll look at all the possible ways to find keyboard settings on Xiaomi, from standard menu paths to hidden features for power users, how to set up Gboard, the native MIUI keyboard, and what to do if the options you need are Suddenly disappeared after an update. We’ll also look at common mistakes (such as when the settings are gray and inactive) and give tips on how to optimize your text input.
Whether you're using Redmi with MIUI 14 or the flagship model on HyperOS, you'll find the right solution here, and if your keyboard has disappeared from the screen, there's an emergency section at the end of this article.
1.The standard way to set up the keyboard on Xiaomi
On most Xiaomi devices (including Redmi, POCO and Black Shark), the keyboard settings are hidden in the Language and Input menu. However, depending on the version of MIUI, the path may be slightly different.
- Open the Settings app** (the gear icon on the home screen or in the app menu).
- Scroll down and select the “Advanced” section (on some models it’s called “System and Device”).
If you have a MIUI 13 or older, the path may be shorter: Settings → Language & Input → Current Keyboard. On POCO F5 and newer HyperOS models, the section is sometimes called “Input Control”** – don’t be afraid, it’s the same.

Important: If there are multiple keyboards on the list, make sure that the one you want is ticked as "Active." Otherwise, the settings may not apply. Also, check "Keyboard Management"** - you can turn on/off layouts here.
2. Where to look for settings on different versions of MIUI
The MIUI shell is regularly updated, and with each new version the settings menu can change. Below are the current paths for popular firmware versions (data checked on Xiaomi 12T, Redmi Note 11 and POCO X4 Pro).
| MIUI/HyperOS version | The Way to Keyboard Settings | Features |
|---|---|---|
| MIUI 12.5 and below | Settings → System → Language and input → Current keyboard | The menu “Additional” is missing, the keyboard settings can be hidden under “Advanced Settings”. |
| MIUI 13 – 14 | Settings → Additional → Language and input → Keyboard | A section called “Keyboard Management” has appeared for quick switching between layouts. |
| HyperOS (2026) | Settings → System → Language and input → Virtual keyboard | The interface is simplified, some options (for example, themes) are transferred to a separate menu. |
| POCO Launcher | Settings → System and device → Language and input | The path is identical to the standard MIUI, but may not have an "Advanced" section. |
On Xiaomi with HyperOS (such as Xiaomi 14 or Redmi K70), the menu has become more minimalist. If you can’t see the usual items, try:
- 🔍 Enter the search for settings query "keyboard"** - the system will tell the current path.
- 📱 Hold your finger to the input field (for example, in messages) and select “Keyboard Settings”** in the menu that appears.
- 🔄 Switch to English interfaces – sometimes translations hide options.

3. Setting up the Gboard keyboard on Xiaomi
Google's Gboard is the most popular alternative to the standard MIUI keyboard, and its settings are more flexible, but they're hidden deeper, so you can open them.
- Run any application with an input field (such as “Messages” or “Notes”).
In the Gboard settings, you can:
- 🎨 Modify theme** (including adaptive colors under wallpaper).
- ⌨️ Set up the layout** (for example, add a number series).
- 🔄 Insert gestures** (swipe with your finger to enter).
- 📝 Manage the dictionary** and auto-replacement.
- 🔍 Activate Google Search** directly from the keyboard.
On Xiaomi with MIUI 14+, some Gboard options may conflict with system settings, for example, if you turn off Text Prediction in MIUI, it will stop working in Gboard.
💡
If Gboard themes are missing, clear the app cache in your Android settings (Settings → Apps → Gboard → Memory → Clear cache).
4. Hidden functions of the MIUI keyboard
The standard MIUI keyboard (aka MiuiKeyboard) has a few hidden features that few people know about, such as:
- 🔍 Search for emoji: type in a keyword in English (like smile) and the keyboard will show all the appropriate emojis.
To open the advanced MIUI keyboard settings:
- Go to Settings → Additional → Language and input → MIUI keyboard.
- Tap on “Additional Settings” (or “Advanced Features”).
How to get back the old MIUI keyboard?
Note: Some models (Redmi 10C, POCO M4 Pro) lack the MIUI keyboard's "Swipe Input" feature, which you'll need to install Gboard or SwiftKey to activate.
5.What to do if the keyboard settings do not open
Sometimes users are faced with the fact that the keyboard settings button is inactive or the menu does not open.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Gray button "Settings" | The keyboard is not installed as the main | Go to Settings → Language and Input → Current keyboard and select the desired one |
| Settings open and close immediately | Application malfunction | Clear the keyboard cache in Settings → Applications → MIUI/Gboard Keyboard → Memory |
| There is no "keyboard" item on the menu | System keyboard removed | Install any keyboard from the Play Market (e.g. Gboard) |
| Settings are reset after rebooting | Conflict with MIUI Optimizer | Turn off auto-cleaning in Settings → Applications → Special Rights → Auto-Run |
If the keyboard has disappeared from the screen, follow the following steps:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Find the MIUI or Gboard keyboard and click “Enable”**.
- If the app is not available, download it from the Play Market.
- After installation, go to Settings → Language and input and activate the keyboard.
💡
If the keyboard does not appear after resetting the settings, check if the “No Sound and Vibration” mode is turned off – it sometimes blocks system services.
Note: Xiaomi with HyperOS may require re-registration of the keyboard in the system.
- Open the Settings. → Annexes → Application management → Three points (⋮) → Show system-based.
- Find the Android Keyboard (AOSP) and reset its settings.
- Reboot your smartphone.
Black Shark has a proprietary feature called "Shark Space"**, a game mode in which the keyboard is automatically hidden when games are launched.
- Open Shark Space** (the icon in the notification curtain).
- Go to "Settings» → «Management of notifications».
Streamer Tip: If you’re streaming from a screen, turn off “Show Offers” in Gboard (sets → “Text input”) to avoid leaking personal data to the air.
7. How to reset keyboard settings to factory
If you've been experimenting with parameters and want to get it back to the way it was, reset it.
For Gboard:
- Open the Gboard settings (image) ⚙️ keyboard).
- Go to “More” → “Resetting settings”.
For the MIUI keyboard:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Find the MIUI keyboard and tap it.
- Select “Storage” → “Delete data”.

If the reset didn’t help and the keyboard still doesn’t work properly, try:
- 🔄 Reinstall the app (for Gboard – remove and download again).
- 📱 Check if the “Children’s Mode” or “Guest Mode” is enabled (they limit functionality).
